Who is Lucy Powell? UK Labour MP under fire for her remarks on grooming gangs
Lucy Powell
, Labour's Leader of the House of Commons, is facing mounting pressure to resign following
controversial remarks
she made about
grooming gangs
during a BBC Radio 4 debate. Her comments, widely criticised by Conservative politicians and commentators, came in response to a question referencing a Channel 4 documentary, Groomed: A National Scandal, which detailed harrowing accounts from victims of sexual exploitation.
During the broadcast of Any Questions, Reform UK's Tim Montgomerie asked Powell if she had seen the documentary. Powell retorted, 'Oh, we want to blow that little trumpet now, do we? Let's get that dog whistle out, shall we?' Her use of the term 'dog whistle' triggered a backlash, with opponents accusing her of belittling the suffering of thousands of victims.
Powell has since sought to clarify her remarks, insisting that she was criticising
political point-scoring
on the issue, not the seriousness of child grooming itself.
'I was challenging the political point scoring around it, not the issue itself. As a constituency MP I've dealt with horrendous cases,' she said.
Senior Conservatives, however, were not satisfied with the explanation. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp called Powell's remarks a 'shocking outburst' and said they 'belittle the thousands of girls and women who were raped by grooming gangs.' Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick said her words were a 'disgusting betrayal of the victims,' while Reform UK said Powell's comments showed Labour was 'out of touch.
'
Despite the backlash, the Prime Minister's Office is understood to have accepted Powell's apology, and she remains in her Cabinet post for now. Fellow
Labour MP
Wes Streeting defended her, saying Powell was 'mortified' and that the comments had come 'in the heat of debate'.

In a big u-turn, UK restores winter fuel payments to millions of pensioners
The United Kingdom is set to make winter fuel payments to millions of older people during the 2025 winter season. This decision comes on Monday, June 9, as a major U-turn of unpopular cuts after months of political pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer . After assuming office in July 2024, Starmer's Labour government cut winter fuel payments for all but the poorest pensioners in England and Wales as part of wider spending reductions. The government made the move, stating that they were necessary to fix a hole in the public finances left by the previous Conservative administration. The move was reversed on Monday, June 9. It will restore those payments to 9 million pensioners, excluding only 2 million who earn above 35,000 pounds ($47,495) from the 200-300 pounds subsidy for heating bills in the colder months, as reported by news agency Reuters. Speaking about the decision to reverse last year's move, Reeves stated that it was right to continue excluding wealthier pensioners from the payment and that last year's "difficult decisions" had been justified. Live Events "Because of those decisions, our public finances are now in a better position, which means that this year we're able to pay the winter fuel payment to more pensioners," she told reporters. How much u-turn will cost UK govt The U-turn is set to cost the government 1.25 billion pounds ($1.69 billion), and means-testing of the payment will save around 450 million pounds. According to the Treasury, the move would not lead to permanent additional borrowing, with funding details to be set out at a budget later in 2025. Starmer signaled last month that he would reverse the cuts. The cuts had meant that around 85% of pensioner households that received the payments lost the benefit, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank.

Residential hostel contract workers plan protest on June 13
Demanding that the State government facilitate payment to contract workers at government hostels through cooperative sanghas and also urging for revision of wages and regularisation of their service, the district unit of the Karnataka Rajya Sarakari Hostel Mattu Vasati Shala Horaguttige Naukarara Sangha will stage a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner's office here on June 13. State president of the sangha Bheemshetty Yempalli, addressing presspersons here on Monday, demanded that the system of recruiting contract workers through manpower agencies should be stopped and instead, the government should recruit workers through cooperative sanghas. The indefinite protest in January was withdrawn after a meeting with Labour Minister Santosh Lad who then agreed to constitute cooperative sanghas for releasing payment of contract workers. Mr. Yempalli also urged the State government to regularise the service of contract workers and revise their honorarium to ₹25,714 per month. He said that though the Mysuru-based Sharp (Swiss) manpower agency has been blacklisted by the Revenue Department, the same agency continues to operate in Kalaburagi district for recruiting workers. The issue has been brought to the notice of the district in-charge Minister Priyank Kharge and Deputy Commissioner Fauzia Tarannum several times, but in vain, Mr. Yempalli said.
