Storm alert follows hot day

The city experienced hot and partly cloudy weather on Sunday, with the Met Office forecasting similar conditions over the next 24 hours.
However, officials from the department issued an alert, warning that wind, dust and thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms and heavy rainfall could damage vulnerable structures such as electric poles, trees, vehicles and solar panels between Monday evening and Tuesday.
They noted that moist currents were moving into the upper and central regions of the country, while a new westerly wave is expected to enter the western and upper areas by Monday night.
Hot and dry conditions are expected to persist across most regions. However, rain, wind and thunderstorms are likely in the Potohar region, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad and northern and southeastern Balochistan during the evening and night.
Isolated heavy rainfall and hailstorms may also occur in these areas.
Rainfall was reported from Narowal, Hafizabad, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Jhang, Gujrat, Sargodha, Mandi Bahauddin, Joharabad, Mangla, Jhelum, Sheikhupura, Kasur and Kotli. The highest temperature on Sunday was recorded at Nokkundi, Sakrand, Chhor and Mithi, where the mercury hit 46°C.
In Lahore, the maximum temperature was 36°C.
Meanwhile, Lahore's average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 58, with PM2.5 levels measured at 2.6 times higher than the World Health Organisation's recommended annual limit.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed the administration and rescue officials to remain alert in view of the likelihood of storm and rain.
Taking notice of the low-lying areas being submerged after rain in Rawalpindi and other cities, she directed the administration and Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) officers to take immediate remedial steps and carry out field visits.
She said, "All resources should be used to ensure timely drainage of water."
She directed the authorities to take necessary steps in all cities to cope with the expected rains.
The chief minister directed the relevant authorities, including Rescue 1122, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and the district administrations to intensify the rehabilitation and relief activities, besides submitting a report on the damage.

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted extreme heat across the country during the Eid-ul-Adha holidays. 'Met office predicted that high pressure is likely to develop over the country on 7 June and is expected to grip most parts from 8 June,' the PMD said in a notification today. The federal government has announced a four-day public holiday for Eid-ul-Adha, starting from Friday, June 6, to Monday, June 9, 2025. A notification in this regard was issued by the Cabinet Division on Monday. It is valid for both five-day and six-day working weeks. The decision was approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and is in continuation of the Cabinet Division's earlier circular issued in December 2024, which outlined the schedule for public and optional holidays for the year 2025.

Dust storm, rain in upper parts predicted
LAHORE: The Met Office has predicted that moist currents are penetrating the north-eastern parts of the country and a westerly wave is also likely to approach upper parts on June 3. Under the influence of this weather system, dust storm/rain-thunder (isolated heavy falls/hailstorm) are expected in Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Malakand, Mansehra, Battagram, Shangla, Kohistan and Abbottabad from June 2-5 with occasional gaps. Dust storm/rain-thunder (isolated heavy falls/hailstorm) are also expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mianwali, Sargodha, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Charsadda, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Kohat, Bannu, Karak and Waziristan on June 3 and 4 (evening/night) with occasional gaps. Dust storm is also expected in southern Punjab during the period. Meanwhile, rain-wind/thunderstorm is expected on Eid-Ul-Adha in Dir, Swat, Chitral, Kohistan and Mansehra from 07th (evening/night) to 09th June. So far as possible impacts are concerned, the Met Office has highlighted that windstorm/dust-thunderstorm/hailstorm/lightning may damage loose structures like electric poles, trees, vehicles and solar panels etc in upper/central parts including Islamabad. Farmers are advised to manage their crop activities keeping in view the weather conditions. General public, travellers and tourists are advised to take precautionary measures during the weather activity. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has also advised all concerned authorities to remain 'ALERT' and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation. Met office warns of continued hot, humid conditions
KARACHI: Citizens braved sweltering heat on Monday as temperatures soared to a searing 39 Celsius, with a drenching 60 percent humidity, as the Met Office has warned of continued hot and humid conditions over the coming days. The intense heat made outdoor activities nearly impossible, with many residents seeking shelter indoors or flocking to shaded areas. Roads appeared less crowded during peak afternoon hours, as the city battled the combined impact of high temperatures and stifling humidity. Many complained about the unbearable conditions, stifling from high humidity and the scorching sun. They felt the intense radiant heat reflected off the road surfaces onto their faces. 'It is nearly impossible to stand by the roadside under the sun,' one citizen said. Health experts have urged citizens to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and limit strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. According to the Met Office, a mild sea breeze may offer some relief by midweek, but until then, citizens are advised to take necessary precautions. The current heatwave is part of a broader trend of rising temperatures observed across southern Pakistan in recent years; raising concerns about the growing impacts of climate change on urban life. The Met anticipated intense hot weather in next couple of days. On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, hot and humid weather will persist, with maximum temperatures slightly lower, ranging from 36 to 38 degrees Celsius, and minimum temperatures between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius. Morning humidity will vary between 65 and 75 percentage, and evening humidity will range from 55 to 65 percentages. The wind direction will remain west/south-westerly, maintaining the warm and moist atmosphere. The forecast indicates continued hot and humid conditions on Wednesday as well with maximum temperatures climbing back to 37 to 39 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures holding steady between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius. During the early hours of the day, humidity will range from 70 to 80 percentages, while evening humidity will fall between 50 and 60 percentage.
