A SYNDICATE is believed to be behind a string of violent house robberies in Havenside in Chatsworth, with the latest victims being elderly siblings.
A 65-year-old man and his 70-year-old sister, of Zintex Street, heard noises at their home on Sunday morning. When the man went to the kitchen, he was confronted by a gunman.
The gunman and two of his accomplices had forced open the security gate, and removed a glass panel from the aluminum door before unlocking it. He then struck the elderly man on the head with the firearm and shot him. The bullet grazed his head. The elderly man remains in the ICU.
A neighbour, who responded to his calls for help, said despite his injuries the man activated the panic alarm.

"Unfortunately, this did not deter the intruders," said the neighbour.
He said the elderly man contacted him at around 1.30am on Sunday.
"I found him bleeding from the head. There was no response from the security company he had contacted. However, my neighbour also activated his panic button and Mzansi Security responded promptly."
He said the intruders ransacked the home - taking two television sets, a microwave, cellphones, cash, jewellery, and items from the refrigerator.
'The man's sister was threatened with death multiple times if she did not disclose the location of their valuables; with specific remarks made about Indians having a lot of jewellery.
'The man was transported by private ambulance to the hospital. He remains in the intensive care unit. A scan revealed shrapnel lodged in his head. This is deeply distressing."
Rocky Naidoo, the chairperson of the Havenside Community Policing Forum (CPF), said he believed a syndicate that had been operating in Bayview, in Chatsworth, could be linked to this incident.
'They are a group of three armed men. Their modus operandi is to force open the gate, remove aluminium panels and open the doors. They then gain entry into the home, and mainly steal cell phones, cash, jewellery and televisions. The group moves around the Bayview policing area and have previously been linked to cases in Silverglen," said Naidoo.
'This spate of home invasions is concerning. The CPF will meet with the community, policing forums, and residents this week to address this. We need an analysis of all the recent incidents to come up with a strategy to curb it. All efforts will be put in place to curb the surge of home invasions."
Sher Singh, a resident in Havenside, said in Turfwood Place in April, Prenolan Nicholas Samuel, 29, was shot multiple times after three men held his mother and sister at gunpoint during a house robbery.
The women were hanging clothing on the washing line.
'In the same week of his death, three armed men robbed another home in Turfwood Place. They are using the bushes to hide. There should be a manhunt to locate them."
He said three suspicious men were spotted on Zintex Street on Monday evening.
"Security officers gave chase. They fired at the officers and managed to disappear."
"These guys are on a rampage. How many other lives must be lost before we stand together and take action within the ambits of the law to make a difference."
The Bayview CPF meeting will be held at the Umhlatuzana Community Hall today (Wednesday) at 6pm. For more information, call Rocky Naidoo on 074 446 0024.

More than R5m in taxpayers' money spent to fund suspended police salaries — Mchunu

SAPS has spent more than R5m to fund the salaries of 11 suspended police officers over the past three years. This was revealed by police minister Senzo Mchunu in a written reply to a recent parliamentary question by Build One SA (Bosa). By May 16, two lieutenant-generals suspended since 2022 have been paid more than R4m without working. Other officers suspended with full pay include sergeants and constables, with their payments ranging from R35,000 to R56,000 each. Bosa spokesperson Roger Solomons criticised the payments, citing a shortage of police resources to respond to crime. 'This is an affront to every South African living in fear, waiting hours for the police to respond, only to be told there are no vehicles, no officers and no capacity. Meanwhile, senior officers who should be leading the fight against crime are being paid millions to sit at home. 'While communities are under siege, SAPS continues to waste resources on suspended officials instead of bolstering front-line policing.' Mchunu previously said the country has a shortage of detectives, with 2,344 vacant posts. Solomons said this shows SAPS's failure in leadership and accountability. 'A culture that tolerates delayed disciplinary processes, shields incompetence and rewards misconduct cannot deliver safety to the people of South Africa. 'Bosa calls for urgent disciplinary case finalisation for suspended officers and transparency reports every quarter on SAPS suspensions and costs.'

Woman killed crossing busy Barrage Road

VANDERBIJLPARK – A female pedestrian died after being hit by a vehicle while trying to cross Barrage Road in Vanderbijlpark this morning. The SAPS, ER24, and Emfuleni Traffic officials responded to the scene. An eyewitness said the woman appeared to be walking from the direction of Vaal University towards the Isak Steyl Stadium when a Renault Sandero struck her. 'She flew from one side of the traffic light to the other,' the witness recalled. 'It was the first time I saw someone fly that high. Her safety boots were left behind, and her body landed on the opposite side.' The incident caused significant traffic congestion as law enforcement investigated the scene. SAPS urge parents to report missing children directly instead of using social media

SAPS urge parents to report missing children directly instead of using social media Colonel Khuselwa Matrose, the commander of the eMbalenhle Police Station, has raised serious concerns about parents reporting missing children on social media, only to later learn that they were taken to initiation schools without their consent. Matrose raised the issue during the Mpumalanga legislature's Africa Public Service Day celebration at the eMbalenhle Sasol Club on June 19. She urged parents to report such incidents directly to the police rather than relying on social media. 'We face a growing problem of boys being taken to initiation schools without their parents' permission,' Matrose said. She added that several cases were opened. 'It is disappointing to see parents post about their missing children online instead of coming to the station to report the case. Abducting children for initiation is unlawful and must be reported,' Matrose said. ALSO CHECK: Lekwa Local Municipality's public conduct by-laws looms Last week, eMbalenhle community members, the Vukanini Taxi Association and a local security company collected 100 boys from initiation schools at the Cedarmont and Holmdene farms in Standerton. The community destroyed both initiation schools, accusing the leaders of illegally initiating children without parental consent. 'Every winter, the SAPS from eMbalenhle, eMzinoni, Kinross and Sakhile accompany parents to collect children taken by force or voluntarily sent to Basotho initiation schools in Cedarmont, Holmdene and Val,' Matrose said. Matrose also urged the community to work closely with the police to help combat crime, especially during the initiation season. Meanwhile, the Mpumalanga Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) has declared zero tolerance for illegal initiation schools and urges parents to take full responsibility for their children during this traditional rite of passage. ALSO CHECK: Municipal bills rise while GMM breaks rates law MEC Speedy Mashilo issued a warning to those planning to operate unauthorised initiation schools, 'It is disheartening that despite awareness campaigns, some continue to run illegal schools. Parents must ensure these schools are registered and that their children undergo medical screening before enrolment,' Mashilo said. According to the department, all senior traditional leaders receive a list of approved initiation schools within their jurisdiction. CoGHSTA's acting dead, Samkelo Ngubane, emphasised that initiation is voluntary and must never be forced on anyone. 'Section 28 of the Customary Initiation Act of 2021 clearly states that taking children to initiation schools without parental consent is illegal. Anyone found doing so will face the full force of the law,' Ngubane said. This year, the department received 405 applications for initiation schools. It approved 403 and rejected two for non-compliance. ALSO CHECK: Double amputee from Modder East Orchards needs prosthetics The official initiation period is June 21 to July 21. Any school operating outside this timeframe will be deemed illegal, and offenders will face prosecution. Mashilo reiterated that only a qualified medical practitioner or a trained traditional surgeon who understands the child's cultural and social background should perform circumcisions. The department partners with senior traditional leaders, the Ingoma Forum, the Ingoma Task Team, the Department of Health, and the SAPS to ensure safe and lawful initiation practices across the province. The public is urged to immediately report suspicious activity or illegal initiation schools to the relevant authorities. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention.
