Car boot sale in Rainham targeted for suspected stolen tools
Around 1,000 suspected stolen tools marked with forensic water have been seized from a car boot sale in east London by the Metropolitan Police who used a dog to sniff them out.The Met worked with Essex Police and trading standards officers to carry out a large search of the Willow Farm Car Boot Sale in Rainham on Sunday and found £50,000 worth of these items.A number of suspected stolen bikes, as well as cash, illegal vapes and other counterfeit goods were also confiscated.Four men, aged between 40 and 60, from Hackney and Southend-on-Sea, have been arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.
Insp Mark Connolly, from the Met's neighbourhood policing team in east London, said: "We've heard from hard-working Londoners about the financial and personal impact of tool theft and we're working hard across the Met to tackle it."As well as working with partners to target prolific offenders in proactive and intelligence-led operations such as this, we're also carrying out tool marking events to make it harder for criminals to sell on stolen goods."The Met says it will work over the coming weeks to identify the tools and trace their original owners.Any tradespeople or those in possession of power tools are advised to mark their property, take photographs, and record serial numbers so that, in the event of theft, officers have more chance of returning property.Marking tools with SelectaDNA forensic water also helps officers identify stolen goods. The Met added: "If the price seems too good to be true, it could be the item is either stolen or fake. Buying goods you know or suspect to be stolen is a criminal offence."

The full statement from Essex Police released yesterday reads: "We are appealing for any information about a man whose body was found at the roadside in Brentwood. "An investigation was launched following the discovery and we are liaising with our partners in law enforcement nationally and internationally to establish his movements in the days and weeks before he was found. "Now, we are appealing for the public's help in building this picture We have launched a Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP), in both Vietnamese and English, for anyone to come forward and share what they may know." Detective Chief Inspector Greg Wood said: 'This is an incredibly complex investigation, with my officers continuing to explore further lines of enquiry to find out how Thai Son came to be at the side of this road. 'It's important we provide those answers for his loved ones, and that anyone who knew him tells us what they know about him.'We are not treating his death as suspicious at this time, but there are questions we must answer about the circumstances of this discovery.' The latest search efforts, 18 years after Madeleine's disappearance in Praia da Luz, were requested as part of the German authorities' ongoing attempts to gather evidence to implicate prime suspect Christian Brueckner, who is behind bars for the rape of a 72-year-old woman in the same area in 2005. Her parents Kate and Scots-born Gerry were dining with friends at a restaurant 100 yards away while the children slept. In 2023, further searches were conducted near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, around 30 miles from where Madeleine went missing. Christian Brueckner spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017, documented in photos and videos of himself near the reservoir. Brueckner is expected to be released from prison this September if no further charges are brought against him.
