British aviation experts are in Ahmedabad to assist with investigations after Air India Flight 171 crashed into a medical school on Thursday, exploding into a fireball and killing at least 270
As search and recovery teams continue to scour the site of the horrific plane crash for a third day after the Air India Flight 171 fell from the sky killing at least 270 people on Thursday, British air accident experts are joining them in India to try and work out just what caused the crash.
According to air traffic control at Ahmedabad Airport, the aircraft departed at 1:39pm local time and gave a Mayday call almost immediately, signalling an emergency. There was no response from the aircraft and footage shows the plane was only in the air for around 30 seconds before it appeared to run into trouble, according to the BBC. T

What will investigators look at in order to gather evidence?
There have been a number of theories as to what happened that day but investigators will take a look at the evidence to determine the exact cause.
This will involve looking at radar, CCTV, the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR) – to understand what factors were involved in the accident. Black boxes hold the key to aircraft crash investigations and are terms used to describe the Cockpit Voice Recorder and Digital Flight Data Recorder.
In April 2025, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau set up a flight recorders laboratory at its premises for carrying out more effective probes into accidents and the crash is being probed by the AAIB.
Investigators will want to know if the crash was a one-off or part of a wider problem with Dereamliner. If they find evidence of a problem that could jeopardise the safety of other aircraft they will announce their initial conclusions as soon as possible, according to The Independent.
In the meantime, Air India's Boeing 787 fleet could be grounded temporarily. As always in the early stages of an investigation, aviation safety experts will consider a wide spectrum of possible factors that could have contributed to the crash.

Bird strikes are a threat to flights
Twin-engine aircraft like the Boeing 787 are engineered to be able to take off on a single engine, even if a bird strikes the engine. Investigators will be looking into the possibility of whether both engines could have been put out of action as the Air India aircraft climbed?
It's happened before - in the 'Miracle on the Hudson' plane crash in 2009, both engines of a US Air aircraft lost power shortly after take off from New York's La Guardia airport. On that occasion, the plane had gained more altitude and was able to crash-land on water, so all passengers survived.

Could a mechanical issue been the cause?
As the investigators sift through the wreckage, they will be looking to see if there was some kind of failure, leaving the pilots helpless to control their aircraft in the crucial seconds after take off. Philip Baum, visiting professor of aviation security at Coventry University told The Independent it 'seems likely' the accident was caused by system or multiple systems failures.
Was human error a factor in the crash?
Taking off with a heavy load of fuel, passengers and cargo in hot weather is challenging and investigators will be looking into whether the pilots could have done something to jeopardise the safety of the aircraft. A captain for a leading US carrier said some focus should be given to the flap settings – the moveable panels on an aircraft's wings – used for take-off for 'a heavy airplane on a hot day, and resulting poor performance which ultimately may have led to a stall'.

Malicious acts - but 'unlikely anything sinister at play'
Tragically, over the years individuals and groups have repeatedly downed aircraft for reasons ranging from grudges to terrorism. But Professor Baum said it was 'unlikely there was anything more sinister at play' and it could have just been an accident.
One thing's for sure - it's the worst air disaster in a decade. On March 8, 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people aboard. Despite an intense search in the southern Indian Ocean, the Boeing 777-200 was never found.
Earlier this year, a new search for the plane was launched more than a decade after the plane went missing, Malaysian authorities said. Investigators concluded it ran out of fuel.
And in 2001, an American Airlines Airbus A300 crashed in the New York City borough of Queens shortly after taking off, killing all 260 on board and five people on the ground.
Flight 587 was bound for Saint-Domingue, in the Dominican Republic, departing from New York's John F. Kennedy airport. Investigators concluded the plane suffered from turbulence which was within tolerance levels, but the first officer's aggressive reactions to it led to the structural failure.

It crashed in Gaurikund, leading to seven deaths. We are ascertaining the reason for the crash.' The helicopter was operated by Aryan Aviation, a private service. Officials said it is believed the crash was caused by poor weather conditions in the area. Authorities have since launched a search and rescue operation, and are expected to review operational protocols for regional flights, according to a local disaster official. Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami wrote on social media: 'The extremely distressing news of a helicopter crash in Rudraprayag district has been received. SDRF, local administration and other rescue teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations.' A meeting is due to take place, chaired by the chief minister, to examine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. According to India Today, some of the country's top officials will be in attendance, including the Chief Secretary, Secretary of Tourism and Civil Aviation, and Secretary of Disaster Management. Families grieve as officials start handing remains of victims killed in Air India crash

It was a morning heavy with grief outside the Civil Hospital mortuary in Ahmedabad, where Khushboo Rajpurohit's family gathered to reclaim her mortal remains, three days after the catastrophic Air India crash that left all but one of the 242 passengers dead. Her uncle, Kishore Rajpurohit, had been waiting outside the complex since early morning. A government official had called the family to confirm the unimaginable: that Khushboo, a 21-year-old newlywed on her way to begin married life in London, had been identified through DNA testing. 'She got married on 17 January this year and was awaiting visa clearance to travel to London and live with her husband,' Mr Rajpurohit told The Independent. Her father had gone to see her off at the airport. 'He waited till she boarded and had not even crossed Mehsana when we learnt of the crash.' The final confirmation came on Sunday morning when a government-appointed nodal officer informed the family that the DNA results had matched. Around 10am, they assembled outside the mortuary, holding on to each other for comfort as they waited for the formalities to conclude. A few hours later, Khushboo's coffin was carefully loaded into an ambulance to be taken to her hometown of Jodhpur, in Rajasthan, accompanied by a police escort and an Air India vehicle. 'It will be handed over to the family with full honour,' Mr Rajpurohit said. Khushboo's was one of the 14 bodies handed over on Sunday, according to hospital officials. The identification process has been painstaking and slow, as most victims were severely dismembered in the explosion. Dr Rajnish Patel, Additional Superintendent of the Civil Hospital, revealed that another body was recovered only on Saturday from the tail of the aircraft. The London-bound Boeing 787 struck a medical college hostel in a residential area of the northwestern city of Ahmedabad minutes after takeoff on Thursday, killing 241 people on board and at least 29 on the ground. One passenger survived. Hundreds of relatives of the crash victims provided DNA samples at the hospital. Most of the bodies were charred or mutilated, making them unrecognizable. Of the many challenges faced by officials, the most sensitive has been piecing together the remains. A senior hospital official involved in the identification process told The Independent that the remains have to be 'identified accurately and stitched together... We have to honour the dead'. DNA matching, he added, takes between 48 to 72 hours per victim. At least 32 complete matches had been achieved so far, with more underway, said Dr Patel. Among those whose DNA match is confirmed includes former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani. Outside the hospital, a line of ambulances stood ready. Mahindra Singh, an ambulance driver from Kheda, a city in Gujarat, said he had been stationed there since Saturday morning. 'We've been told to carry two bodies. Once the call comes, we leave. We're not allowed to contact the families – only the nodal officers inform them.' From Kutch, Bharat Godia had arrived with a fleet of five ambulances. 'We were ordered by the district administration to collect the bodies. Government officials will accompany them,' he said. At the Panchal house in Baroda, it was a call no one wanted to receive – certainly not at 12.30am. Shashi Panchal's phone rang on Saturday night, bringing with it the final confirmation he had dreaded: the bodies of his elder brother, Narendra Panchal, and sister-in-law, Usha Panchal, had been identified through DNA testing. The couple were among the 241 victims of the Air India crash that has devastated families across India and beyond. They were on their first trip to London to visit their only son, who is studying for a law degree in the UK. 'My nephew was supposed to come back in September,' said Mr Panchal, speaking outside Ahmedabad's Civil Hospital on Sunday. 'But my brother had suggested they visit him instead, and all three could return together.' Mr Panchal, who had travelled from Baroda overnight, admitted the confirmation came as a crushing shock. 'Actually, I didn't even know they were on that flight,' he said. 'When I heard what had happened … I can't even begin to describe what was going through my mind. It was a very difficult time.' He had been told to arrive at the hospital by noon, but delays in the formalities meant he had yet to see the mortal remains when The Independent spoke with him. Even so, he expressed gratitude for how the process had been managed. 'The services have been good, the arrangements too. Whatever had to happen, has happened,' he said. But no sense of order can fill the space left behind by the dead. When asked whether he sought an investigation into the tragedy, Mr Panchal said, 'I just want to make sure something like this never happens again. The government and all the authorities must ensure that.' 'Because no matter how good the services are, they won't bring back my brother and sister-in-law,' he added. Alongside the formal investigation, the Indian government has set up a high-level committee to examine the causes leading to the crash. The committee will focus on formulating procedures to prevent and handle aircraft emergencies in the future, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said in a statement Saturday. Authorities have also begun inspecting Air India's entire fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said on Saturday in capital Delhi at his first news briefing since Thursday's crash. Eight of the 34 Dreamliners in India have already undergone inspection, Mr Kinjarapu said, adding that the remaining aircraft will be examined with 'immediate urgency.' Investigators on Friday recovered the plane's digital flight data recorder, or the black box, from a rooftop near the crash site. The device is expected to reveal information about the engine and control settings, while the voice recorder will provide cockpit conversations, said Paul Fromme, a mechanical engineer with the UK-based Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The plane that crashed was 12 years old. Boeing planes have been plagued by safety issues on other types of aircraft. There are currently around 1,200 of the 787 Dreamliner aircraft worldwide and this was the first deadly crash in 16 years of operation, according to experts.

There were distressing scenes at hospitals as mums and dads and sons and daughters pleaded with the authorities to release remains for burial. Among them was Abdullah Nanabawa, the father of Akeel Nanabawa, who died alongside his wife Hannaa Vorajee and their four-year-old daughter Sara. Mr Nanabawa, who grew up in Newport, South Wales, was flying back to his home in Gloucestershire with his wife and child. Abdullah told the Sunday Telegraph: 'Release the bodies of my relatives. This is unfair. They won't let me inside the mortuary. I'm his father. It's my right to see him, no matter how broken, how burned. I have to face this.'I should have died instead, he was taken away.' He spoke of the shock of watching graphic footage which appeared to show body parts strewn across a large room inside a morgue. Ayub Sheikh was pictured gesturing angrily as he waited for the bodies of four relatives to be released. ‌ ‌ Hannaa Vorajee's cousin, Ameen Siddiqui, 28, from Surat in Gujarat, said their home had been 'alive with laughter' at Eid, reunited with their British relatives. He said: 'We've been coming to the hospital every day since the crash, morning till midnight, and no one tells us anything. It's as if we're invisible. They won't even confirm if their bodies are inside. Officials keep repeating, 'wait 72 hours.' Seventy-two hours for what? We're not even allowed past the gate. Even the people at the helpline don't answer our queries. There is a wall of silence while our dead lie inside, worst pain is not just that we lost them, but that we can't even see them, can't say goodbye, can't know. 'None of us imagined it would be our last Eid together or that the next time we'd gather, it would be to wait outside a hospital, begging for answers.' The identities of more of the victims is started to emerge today. Recently married Lawrence Daniel Christian, 26, was in India after the death of his dad He posed for a heartbreaking final picture with his mother, Raveena, at Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, moments before boarding the flight to London, where he lived with his wife. His aunt said: 'We tried calling him repeatedly after seeing the news. We rushed to the plane crash site and saw the plane completely destroyed. We lost Lawrence Christian in this crash, just days after we lost his father.' A family friend said his widow, who had stayed in London, was shattered, adding: 'She keeps saying this must be a mistake.' Kamlesh Chaudary, 27, from London, was described by a friend as the 'sole bread winner' for his family in Ahmedabad. He was killed alongside his wife Dhapuben, who he was bringing back to settle in the UK with him. ‌ There was also a minute's silence at a village fete in memory of a shopkeeper and 'pillar of the community' who died in the crash. Ketan Shah, 43, one of 53 Britons on the doomed flight, ran the community store in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire. He is survived by his wife Megha, teenage son and daughter. Staff at the shop said: 'It is a very difficult time for us as we need to process this tragedy. Ketan loved this village and its people.' Nearly £500,000 have been raised for too young sisters left orphaned after their father died in the Air India plane crash. Arjun Patoliya, from Harrow, London, had travelled to India to fulfil the dying wish of his 42 year old wife Bharti who died of cancer in May. He had scattered her ashes in Gujarat before boarding the doomed flight to Gatwick t o return home to his two daughters Jiya, eight, and four year old Roya. A GoFundMe campaign launched by family and friends has raised £493,000 for the girls to 'secure their future' with the cash being put into a legal trust.
