Instead, due to technical issues with their Boeing Starliner spacecraft, they remained aboard the International Space Station for more than 286 days. Though the duo rejected the term 'stranded,' the world watched their unplanned odyssey with awe. Their mission took place during a pivotal moment in space exploration, as both national agencies and, recently, private companies expanded access to orbit. This growing reach brings an urgent reminder: Our ability to care for humans in space must evolve alongside our ambition to send them there. The health challenges faced during their extended stay reveal why understanding and investing in aerospace medicine is essential, not just for astronauts, but also for the future of healthcare on Earth.
Long-duration spaceflight pushes human physiology to its limits. Floating in microgravity, astronauts experience bodily changes that read like an accelerated aging process. Deprived of gravity's pull, bones lose mineral density at a rate of 1%-1.5% per month and muscles atrophy from disuse despite vigorous exercise. Fluids shift upward toward the head, sometimes impairing vision and brain structure, a condition scientists call SANS (spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome). The heart, no longer working against gravity, can weaken, and the immune system can become less effective, leaving crew members more susceptible to infections. Even the psyche is tested by isolation and confinement.
Yet Williams and Wilmore returned in good health after 9 months, a testament to careful medical monitoring and the strides aerospace medicine has made. It is also a warning: Missions can last far longer than planned, so space agencies must be prepared to keep astronauts healthy in unpredictable circumstances. In this case, NASA improvised by integrating the pair into the Station's normal crew rotation, ensuring they had access to nutrition, exercise, and medical care until a SpaceX capsule brought them home safely. Such adaptability in extreme conditions is only possible because of decades of research into how the human body copes with space; research that is yielding dividends for healthcare here on Earth.
Space Tech in Earthly Healthcare
Consider how technology developed for astronauts could find its way into your hospital or home. When Williams and Wilmore were 'stuck' in orbit, doctors on the ground guided them through ultrasounds using remote telemedicine tools, the same approach now used to deliver prenatal care and emergency ultrasounds in rural communities with no resident physician. The biosensors in an astronaut's suit that track heart rate, temperature, and hydration have inspired wearable devices for patients on Earth. In fact, NASA's need to monitor crew health remotely led to an AI-powered system that now lets clinicians track heart failure patients at home and intervene early. These are not isolated examples. Spaceflight's harsh realities, limited resources, no immediate evacuation, delayed communication, forced innovations like compact medical devices, telemedicine protocols, and autonomous health support have relevant parallels to low-resource settings back on Earth.
Aerospace medicine's benefits mirror the story of Formula One racing and everyday cars. The extreme environment of F1 with high speeds and high stakes is a proving ground for safety and engineering breakthroughs, from advanced braking systems to fuel efficiency, which eventually make their way into the sedans and SUVs we drive.
Space is a similar testbed for healthcare. Treating osteoporosis takes on new urgency when a crew's bones are thinning in microgravity. Solutions, like new bone-loss medications or exercise regimes developed for a Mars mission, could aid the 55-year-old on Earth with osteoporosis. The psychological support methods crafted for a lonely, stressed astronaut can improve mental healthcare for isolated communities or even future pandemic lockdowns. Innovations are not confined to physiology either. The Canadarm robot that maintained the Space Shuttle led to a robotic arm for delicate brain surgeries on Earth, and Mars rover engineering spurred telemedicine robots that perform remote ultrasound and surgery, bringing specialist care to remote villages. In short, investing in space health is not a zero-sum diversion from terrestrial medicine: It is a catalyst for it.

The space race is also no longer the domain of national agencies alone. The recent successful crewed launch by Blue Origin marks a turning point; private companies are no longer just ferrying cargo but are now sending people into orbit. Space is becoming more accessible, drawing in not only researchers and astronauts, but also tourists and filmmakers.
Yet, with this growing democratization of space comes a deeper responsibility: Health and safety must not be afterthoughts in the rush to explore. Artificial intelligence and even early-stage quantum computing are being harnessed to address the complex challenges of long-duration missions, from predicting health issues before they emerge to improving radiation shielding. These innovations signal that we are preparing to send humans farther and for longer. NASA's Artemis program aims to establish a sustained presence on the Moon, and a crewed mission to Mars is moving from science fiction to a near-future reality. But amid the excitement of shiny rockets and futuristic habitats lies a less glamorous truth: Without robust medical infrastructure, even the most ambitious missions may falter. It is one thing to send humans to Mars, it is quite another to keep them healthy during the journey and once they arrive.
That is why making space health central to policy discussions is so urgent. We need our leaders to recognize that funding astronaut healthcare research benefits everyone, not just a few spacefarers. We need more initiatives, including fellowships, residencies, and training programs that prepare clinicians to practice medicine in extreme environments, both off-planet and in underserved communities on Earth. The 'stranded astronauts' story is an opportunity to push for greater investment in the medical systems that protect space explorers. This includes encouraging companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin to play a stronger role in advancing space health research and infrastructure. This could also mean increasing budgets for NASA's human research program (currently just a tiny fraction of overall space expenditures) and incentivizing public-private partnerships to translate space innovations into clinics worldwide with the help of companies like SpaceX. It also means incorporating the lessons of aerospace medicine into global health strategies: If we can deliver quality care to astronauts 400 km above Earth, we can surely improve care for isolated populations 400 km from the nearest city. Each medical puzzle we solve in space, like how to mend a broken bone or treat an infection without a full hospital, adds a piece to the puzzle of better healthcare on Earth. The line between an astronaut and the rest of us is thinner than we think.
We should heed the call. Let us channel the same urgency and ambition that fuels rocket launches into supporting aerospace medicine. It is time for health policy to enter the final frontier, not as an afterthought but as a driving force. The next time astronauts are thrust into an unforeseen trial, we will be ready to care for them, and we will be better equipped to care for ourselves. It is up to us to ensure that support grows stronger, for astronauts and Earthlings alike, because the innovations that keep a person alive in space might just save your life down here tomorrow.

Dodgers' Tyler Glasnow is optimistic about recovery from shoulder injury
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tyler Glasnow is feeling optimistic about his recovery from a shoulder injury that has sidelined him since late April, one of five Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitchers who are on the injured list. There's no timetable yet for his return. The 31-year-old right-hander got hurt against Pittsburgh on April 27. He was recently moved to the 60-day IL. 'My shoulder is totally fine,' he said Tuesday. He signed a $135.5 million, five-year deal before the 2024 season. Also Tuesday, the Dodgers signed right-hander José Ureña, who was designated for assignment last weekend by Toronto. He was 0-0 with a 3.65 ERA in six appearances for the Blue Jays. He began the season with the New York Mets, giving up five runs in three innings of his lone appearance. Ureña, 33, has spent 11 years in the majors with Miami, Detroit, Milwaukee, Colorado, the Chicago White Sox, Texas, the Mets and Blue Jays. He is 44-77 with a 4.78 ERA in 239 games. As Trump administration eases EPA regulations, Houston could pay a price
Washington — Since President Trump took office in January, his Environmental Protection Agency has been both slashing and reconsidering dozens of rules designed to fight pollution. The White House is also firing many of the EPA staffers who enforce the rules that remain. This week, CBS News visited a Houston neighborhood that's near an NRG Energy coal-fired power plant, the largest in Texas. When CBS News visited the same neighborhood in December, Mr. Trump had just been elected to a second term, promising the energy industry that he would roll back environmental regulations that protect air quality. "I think of pollution as a silent and invisible killer," Dr. Winston Liaw, chair of the Health Systems and Population Health Sciences Department at the University of Houston, told CBS News. Liaw treats patients who run a higher risk of lung disease, asthma and heart attacks due to emissions from oil refineries, chemical plants and coal plants in the Houston area. He explained how the air in Houston can impact human health. "There are these tiny particles, and they're so small that they bypass a lot of our defenses," Liaw said. "And then they start injuring all sorts of tissue in our body." A 2018 study from Rice University found that pollution from the NRG plant contributes to 177 premature deaths per year. In April, the Trump administration gave 68 plants — including the NRG plant in the Rice study — a two-year exemption from complying with federal regulations intended to lower mercury emissions, a powerful toxin that can affect the brain. CBS News analyzed the Trump administration's exemptions and found that nearly 65% of these plants are located within 3 miles of low-income, minority communities. "Bottom line is, who's more at risk are poor people," said Ben Jealous, executive director of the Sierra Club, an environmental advocacy group that has led an effort to try and close almost two-thirds of the nation's coal plants. "When you start increasing production of coal-fired power plants, you're going to kill more people, and you're going to cause more heart attacks, and you're going to cause more asthma attacks," Jealous said. In a statement provided to CBS News, NRG Energy said its "coal units operate in compliance with the current Mercury Air Toxics Standards (MATS) and will operate in compliance with any future MATS requirements." In a separate statement, the Trump administration said Biden-era coal plant regulations "stacked burdensome regulations on top of the longstanding Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, raising the risk of coal-fired plants shutting down – which would eliminate thousands of jobs, strain our electrical grid, and undermine our national security by leaving America vulnerable to electricity shortages." Jealous argues that coal is not a more reliable energy source than renewable energies. "The argument that coal gives you more reliable energy isn't valid," Jealous said. "Solar, wind and batteries gives you the most reliable, the most resilient grid." More importantly, he said, for the people of Houston and across the country, renewable energy means less pollution.

Questions about Biden's health have resurfaced after the release of "Original Sin," a new book by CNN anchor Jake Tapper and Axios journalist Alex Thompson, which alleges that Biden's inner circle concealed the president's flailing health and cognitive decline for years, despite telling the public that he was mentally sharp and fit for office. Meyers ripped the media for paying attention to the Biden "cover-up" when, according to him, "The Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress are rapidly dismantling American civil society and turning the country into a reclusive oligarchy." "But I don't want to talk about any of that and neither does the media. We both want to talk about something way more important. The late-night host argued that the president's advanced age wasn't a secret and the majority of Americans were against him running for re-election in the 2024 campaign, believing him to be too old to serve again. "Now, you might be thinking to yourself, 'Wait, didn't everybody already know that Joe Biden was old?'" Meyers asked. "'Didn't poll after poll show that the vast majority of Americans, including a clear majority of Democrats, thought he was too old to run for reelection, and wanted someone else? Didn't he biff it so bad in the debate that his own party undertook an unprecedented effort to successfully force him out of the race?'" "'Weren't Democrats ultimately punished for Biden's disastrous choice to run again when they got their asses kicked in the November election?'" he continued. "'Didn't Seth play that clip of Biden falling up the stairs, like, 1,000 times?'" "This was on TV, everyone saw it," he said of Biden stumbling while walking up the stairs of Air Force One in 2021. "If this was a cover-up, if this was the worst [bleep] cover-up in American history. It was the worst-kept secret since Mika and Joe," he joked, referring to the relationship of "Morning Joe" co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough who wed in 2018 after years of co-hosting the morning MSNBC show. "This was only like Watergate if the break-in had been live-streamed on Twitch," Meyers added. After poking fun at reports that Biden got lost in his closet in the White House, Meyers turned serious. "It was just a disastrous political choice. And the people who deserve criticism for that are Biden, the aides who convinced him and themselves that he should ignore reality and run again," he concluded. Meyer's Monday night show appears to be the first time he referenced the Biden cover-up revelations from Tapper's book, according to Grabien transcripts. Meyer and fellow liberal late-night hosts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel have all welcomed Biden for friendly interviews. Most recently, Biden was on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" in February 2024, just days after the release of Special Counsel Robert Hur's report. Hur was heavily attacked by the media at the time for calling Biden a "sympathetic, well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory" in his report. During his February 2024 interview of Biden, Meyers gently broached the subject of Biden's age before quickly moving on to other topics. After Hur's report was released a few days later, Meyers called the special counsel's comments a "gratuitous hypothetical" and stressed that Hur was a "Republican attorney" who "was originally appointed by Trump." "If that kind of language was appropriate in a legal finding, then prosecutors could have done the same thing to Trump," Meyers said before repeatedly drawing attention to President Donald Trump's mental acuity.
