Highland Park parade shooter sentenced to life in prison without parole
The convicted shooter in the 2022 Highland Park Fourth of July Parade, Robert Crimo III, was sentenced to life in prison without parole on Thursday.
Judge Victoria Rossetti listened to testimony and victim statements over the past two days. Rossetti gave the shooter seven consecutive life sentences for the murder convictions, plus 50 years for each of the 48 attempted murder charges.
Crimo was not in court as the sentence was announced, but an unrelated issue inside the jail regarding the shooter caused a brief recess during the judge's sentencing. After a recess of about 45 minutes, the shooter decided not to come into court after all, and the sentencing continued.
On Wednesday and Thursday, survivors of the mass shooting, joined by their families, sat in the courtroom as witnesses answered questions and recounted the day. First responders and a victim of the shooting spoke on the first day of sentencing.
A shooting survivor spoke on Thursday on behalf of herself and her late husband. Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart shared a closing statement about the shooter's impact on the Highland Park community.
The shooter pleaded guilty last month to 21 counts of first-degree murder and 48 counts of attempted first-degree murder just moments before opening statements were set to begin in his trial.
Those who were killed in the shooting included 64-year-old Katherine Goldstein, 35-year-old Irina McCarthy, 37-year-old Kevin McCarthy, 63-year-old Jacquelyn Sundheim, 88-year-old Stephen Straus, 78-year-old Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza, and 69-year-old Eduardo Uvaldo.
Another 48 people were wounded in the shooting, including Cooper Roberts, then 8, who was left paralyzed from the waist down.
Highland Park gunman skips sentencing hearing
The convicted shooter was told multiple times that his trial and now his sentencing would happen with or without him, and he chose not to attend his sentencing.
Still witnesses and victims one by one took the stand on an emotional day for everyone in the courtroom.
Retired Highland Park Police Commander Gerry Cameron, who was at the scene of the shooting, and led the investigation into the attack, talked about personally transporting three people to the hospital after Crimo started shooting – killing seven people and wounding 48 others.
Highland Park resident Dana Ruder Ring took the stand. She was at the parade with her husband and three children.
Crimo repeatedly failed to attend court proceedings in his case before ultimately pleading guilty. During the three days of jury selection, he was only in court for the first half of each of the first two days, and was not in court at all on the final day of jury selection.

He's in jail right now. Just to go and investigate." "He's in jail for a different charge?" asked FOX 2's Brandon Hudson. "He's in jail for a different charge, but my thing is that he's already tied up with the authorities in court. Let's keep him there," Harris responded. "Give me a sense of the emotions that you're going through four years later?" Brandon asked. "It's just some frustrations. I'm disappointed that it's actually taking this long," she said. "And it's really making me wonder that if a person sees a crime, and they report it, is something really done." Why you should care Mama Shu hopes the billboard will provide a resolution. In the years since, Mama Shu has continued to help Avalon Village thrive. It has been a source of healing for the sadness and confusion she feels over her son's unresolved murder. Still, she holds fond memories close to her heart. "I would just open up the door real hard, like boom, slam it open," she said. "Then, I start looking over at him. Then, he'll get out of his truck, and then he'll look over and start doing the same thing. We'll both nod. It's like a checkpoint, 'ok, Chin-mama, I love you.'" Mama Shu says she'll keep the billboard up for 30 days, and then another 30 days if needed.

According to the Highland Park Police Department, Vincent Weaver, 29, is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and misdemeanor indecent exposure. He was arraigned on Monday. Weaver, who taught at George Washington Carver Academy, was arrested on Friday, May 16. Police say that at the time of the arrest, he was dressed in disguise to avoid being recognized by staff. Highland Park Police Department Authorities allege that he engaged in sexual misconduct with the student when they were between the ages of 10 and 12. Weaver joined the school staff in August 2023 as a fine arts teacher and also served as the coach of the school's dance team. He was fired in May 2025, according to police. The school issued the following statement on Monday: "George Washington Carver Academy was recently made aware of an incident involving a teacher and student. We immediately notified law enforcement, placed the employee on suspension, and after an internal investigation, terminated their employment and removed them from campus. "We are fully cooperating with the Highland Park Police in their ongoing investigation and please ask that you direct any further inquiries to them. "Our immediate, top priority and focus remains the safety and well-being of our students and their families, and we are committed to supporting them with appropriate resources during this time.
