Ford Bend County Judge KP George, who is currently facing charges over alleged money laundering and misrepresentation of identity, has announced his defection from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party.
Newsweek contacted George, one of his attorneys and both the Texas Democrats and Republican Party of Texas for comment via email or online inquiry form. We are yet to receive a response but this story will be updated if we do.
Why It Matters
George's defection means the Fort Bend County Commissioners Court in Texas now contains three Republicans and two Democrats, a reversal of the previous situation.
Despite their name, Commissioner Courts are legislative and administrative bodies that have influence over a range of subjects in the county including its budget, infrastructure and electoral districts.
Speaking to the Houston Chronicle, Fort Bend County Republican Party President Bobby Eberle said he hoped the move would lead to "real change" including "fair and balanced voting maps and correcting the obscenely gerrymandered commissioners' precinct lines forced on the county by the Democrats in 2021."
What To Know
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, George said he was joining the Republican Party after concluding "the Democratic Party has embraced a corrupt and radical ideology" with "its positions no longer reflecting the values of Fort Bend County families, small businesses [and] also hardworking residents."
By contrast, George said the GOP was the party of "faith, family and freedom" adding: "I chose a side, and it turned out to be the wrong place, and I'm fixing that." He added he plans to stand for reelection in 2026 as a Republican candidate.
George has been charged with money laundering between $30,000 and $150,000, a third-degree felony with a maximum sentence of ten years in prison. Prosecutors allege the laundering was campaign finance fraud and took place between January 12, 2019, and April 22, 2019. George took office on January 1, 2019, following a 2018 election.
According to Houston Public Media, in April 2025 George denied wrongdoing, accusing the district attorney's office of "weaponizing" its powers against him.

He also said the money that is subject to the investigation was to repay a loan of personal funds to his campaign in what he described as a "standard and lawful practice."
Separately in September, 2024, George was indicted on a misdemeanor charge of misrepresentation of identity, following allegations he conspired with his former staffer Taral Patel to target George's own campaign with falsified racist comments on social media during his 2022 reelection campaign, some of which were attributed to real people.
George narrowly secured reelection in the 2022 contest, with 51 percent of the vote.
Prosecutors claim the racist comments were posted by Patel using fake accounts and that George was aware this was taking place. George has denied any wrongdoing. In April, 2025, as part of a plea deal, Patel admitted he committed misrepresentation in a bid to support George politically
What People Are Saying
In a statement Republican Commissioner Andy Meyers said: "Regardless of Judge George's party affiliation, I'll continue to collaborate with him and other members of commissioners court for the good of our community."
Judge Dexter McCoy, one of the two remaining Democrats on the commissioners court, described George as "morally corrupt."
He said: "He has chosen to prioritize his own personal self-interests over the will and well-being of the people who elected him. He has turned his back on the values he claimed to represent, and in so doing, has betrayed the trust of our community."
What Happens Next
George could face a primary challenge from other Republicans if he goes ahead with his plan of seeking election in 2026 under the party's platform. The legal cases against him are ongoing and it remains to be seen how they will be resolved.

Tracy Murphy announces second run for Lewis County sheriff
Jun. 18—A former candidate for Lewis County sheriff will take another shot at running for the office in 2026 after registering with the Washington state Public Disclosure Commission last month. Sgt. Tracy Murphy, the leader of the Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team (JNET) who has worked with the Centralia Police Department for 30 years, filed his candidacy with the state commission last month and confirmed his plans to run during an interview with The Chronicle on Tuesday, June 17. This will be Murphy's second time running for the spot after losing a closely watched race in 2022 to current Lewis County Sheriff Rob Snaza. Murphy, like Snaza, is a Republican. Murphy, who was highly critical of Snaza's handling of the department in 2022, said his reasons for running haven't changed. When talking about his plans to officially file next May and run in 2026, Murphy said he learned a lot from the last race both personally and in regards to the political process. While those lessons may be helpful, Murphy also said he doesn't want to focus on his last race to be sheriff. "One of the big things is I don't want to focus on last time and what happened. I want to focus on 'where do we need to be to have a better tomorrow?'" Murphy said. "Making this a good place again. Bringing back confidence in law enforcement and the sheriff's office." When asked what his hopes are for the office and what he would change if elected, he said his first priority would be rebuilding relationships locally and regionally, adding that he believes the Lewis County Sheriff's Office will be better equipped and be able to do more with strong cooperation. The sheriff's office's departure from JNET was among the issues Murphy was critical of in 2022. "It really comes back to relationships. In order for any law enforcement agency to be successful in their mission, we have to be working together, and we have to be working with our local partners, our state partners and our federal partners," Murphy said. "We can't just silo ourselves and think we can handle everything within ... The Lewis County Sheriff's Office doesn't have all the tools." While Murphy said he doesn't plan to start campaigning until after the November 2025 general election, he said registering with the PDC was important so that he can be honest with those who ask him about his plans to run. "I want to do things correct and I want to do things right, and the first step was filing with the PDC," Murphy said. "I want to be able to tell people when they ask me." With a year until open filing for the position, Murphy is the first candidate to announce his plans to run. In response to The Chronicle's request for comment, Snaza stated that he has made no formal decision about running and has no further comments on the matter. Snaza has been sheriff since 2015.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett insists ‘granddaddy' Biden's acuity ‘supreme' compared to Trump
Firebrand Rep. Jasmine Crockett defended former President Joe Biden's mental acuity and argued that his cognition was 'supreme' compared to President Trump during a recent podcast interview. Shrugging off bombshell revelations about Biden's decline from the new book 'Original Sin' and elsewhere, Crockett (D-Texas) underscored that she 'never saw anything' from the 46th president that caused her to question his infirmity. 'Even if we want to say — which I refuse to accept — that Joe Biden was mentally deficient, let me tell you something, his mental deficiency is still a thousand times better than what we currently have,' Crockett said on Katie Couric's 'Next Question' podcast in an episode that dropped Thursday. Advertisement 'I just wish that, ultimately, this country would judge each of our leaders with the same measuring stick.' Questions about Biden's cognitive abilities reached a fever pitch almost exactly a year ago in the aftermath of his fumbling debate performance against Trump, in which he repeatedly lost his train of thought and appeared stone-faced at times, mouth agape. 3 The Texas congresswoman said in her personal experience with him, former President Joe Biden seemed fine. Getty Images for SiriusXM Advertisement 3 The former president was poised to attend an African Methodist Episcopal church in Galveston, Texas, to celebrate Juneteenth on Thursday. AP The stunning debate prompted a revolt among Democrats that ultimately culminated with Biden dropping out of the race in July of last year. Recently, those dramatic events have been revisited in the bombshell book 'Original Sin' by star Axios reporter Alex Thompson and CNN anchor Jake Tapper, triggering soul searching among Democrats over Biden, who announced his prostate cancer diagnosis last month. On Wednesday, the GOP-led Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on Biden's use of autopen and his supposed cognitive decline. The House Oversight Committee is conducting a similar probe. Advertisement Crockett had stood by Biden during the Democratic revolt last summer. She likened his condition to that of her grandmother, whom the rep said 'mentally she was still there' despite aging and slowing down. 3 President Trump has publicly bashed Rep. Jasmine Crockett. AP 'We all slow down. But I will tell you that I will take a broken — or however they want to describe Joe Biden — over Donald Trump any given day, because, number one, I know Joe Biden's heart,' the Texas Democrat contended. 'Even if you're saying that there was a mentally deficient Joe Biden, I know that he absolutely had a mental acuity that is supreme when it comes to comparing him to Donald Trump, because at least he kept good people around him.' Advertisement The outspoken Texas congresswoman also recalled her personal interactions with Biden to argue that he was not in significant decline during his time running the country. 'The average person has not been given the level of access that the average member of Congress has to the president,' she explained. 'I never saw anything in Joe Biden that made me wonder whatsoever, and it's not that I was with Joe Biden every single day, that's for sure. But as I talked about my grandparents — the way that I would describe Joe is like, I mean, he's a granddaddy, right?'

Armies of Kremlin and Iran bots aimed at attempting to destroy MAGA: report
Russia and Iran are targeting the Make America Great Again movement and trying to 'destabilize the right from within,' according to a new report. Both rogue states are using tens of thousands of social media bots to amplify untrue voices and opinions 'masquerading as MAGA loyalists,' to cause chaos and confusion and question US leadership, The Post has learned. The bots are automated software applications that mimic human activity on social media. Advertisement They are used to amplify real-life influencers who post untrue 'false flag' narratives designed to discredit President Donald Trump and his conservative stalwarts, according to a bombshell new report from the Network Contagion Research Institute, a politically neutral nonprofit who study extremism on the web. 5 The same foreign playbook that undid the Democratic party is trying to destroy MAGA from within, according to a new NCRI report. REUTERS 'If you talk to Republicans right now, more than 80 percent of them support the war against Iran. But if you go on Twitter you get the sense that there is a civil war raging. Advertisement 'This is exactly the purpose of the psychological operation — to destabilize people's perceptions of institutions that are supposed to protect us,' said an NCRI analyst. The bots make it look like extreme posters have tons more support than they actually have, which helps to persuade other real life viewers that what they are posting is legitimate. The bots use innocuous, average names and have profiles which make them appear as average Americans. NCRI says after domestic attacks, including the Uvalde school shooting, Matthew Crooks assassination attempt on Donald Trump and the murder of two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington DC in May it has noticed an alarming trend of a 'false flag reflex'. Advertisement 'Within minutes of initial reports [the events are recast] as evidence of hidden conspiratorial plots, obscuring the true motives and perpetrators. 'In the days following these crises, Kremlin-affiliated propagandists and Iranian state-linked media are able to rapidly inject narratives that are taken up by MAGA-impostor influencers, who then inject them into MAGA-branded spaces,' the report notes. 5 Noctis Draven, who is a regular consultant for Kremlin media, spread the 'false flag' story about the murder of two Israeli staffers in an attempt to push a conspiracy theory that Israel was behind the deaths. Network Contagion Research Institute 5 Evidence from a Network Contagion Research Institute's report showing bots spreading misinformation calling real events 'false flags' Network Contagion Research Institute Advertisement The group points to Draven Noctis, a real person and US veteran who frequently contributes to Russian state media, and has a potential reach of 2.4 million with more than 180,000 followers on X. 'It's so expensive in the US and Canada that even refugees can't understand how we make it,' he says in a 2024 TikTok post while describing the US as a 'slave system' designed to impoverish its own citizens. 'We are free range humans in an open-air prison of taxes and bulls–t distractions and we think it's completely normal,' he continues. In an earlier post on EurAsia Daily, a Kremlin propaganda outlet, he is shown in military uniform urging Ukrainian soldiers to defect to Russia. The message is written in Cyrillic alphabet, propaganda which is then republished by bots. 5 Jackson Hinkle, a social media influencer, spreads anti-Western conspiracies to his more than three million X followers. Getty Images The 'false flag' narrative surrounding the murder of two Israeli embassy staffers in May – absurdly attempting to claim the man charged with the shooting was, in fact, working on behalf of Israel – was another case in point, the nonprofit says. 'Foreign-linked seeders, such as Noctis, inject crisis narratives within minutes of breaking news. Their content is then mass-republished by clusters of inauthentic accounts, according to the NCRI report. 'Domestic personalities with large but unstable followings – [such as noted trolls like] Jackson Hinkle supply a veneer of grassroots legitimacy, completing an 'asset-adjacency' model in which fringe US influencers ride the same engagement farms that propel Kremlin messaging,' the NCRI report says. Between May 1 and June 10, NCRI recorded 675,000 posts on X referencing 'false flag' and drawing nearly four million interactions, according to the report, adding activity spiked in two sharp bursts: on May 24 after the embassy shooting and on June 3 after the firebombing of a Jewish demonstration in Boulder. Advertisement 5 X user Red Pill Media claims to be based in the US, but was found to originate in Karachi, Pakistan. Eyal Yakoby/ Red Pill Media/ X 'False-flag allegations occupy a privileged corner of Russian hybrid-warfare doctrine: a ready-made, easily adaptable alibi that flips blame, muddies attribution, and buys time for diplomatic misdirection,' the report says. For instance, a tweet from 'Red Pill Media,' which identifies itself as 'exposing Zionist terrorism' and has nearly 81,000 followers on its X account claims to be based in the US, but another user recently revealed that the account belongs to Abdul Abbas in Karachi, Pakistan. Working through firebrand right wing social media influencers, Kremlin-affiliated propagandists also conducted 'a coordinated assault' against Trump, according to the report. Advertisement 'It's a combination of an artificial voice with a real voice,' said an analyst with NCRI. 'It destroyed the Democratic party and now they are going after MAGA.' The network is quick to jump on and twist almost any story in the news cycle, and have recently trained their sights on President Trump, NCRI says. 'The network's goals extend beyond crisis exploitation,' the report says. 'After leveraging the false-flag frame to pose as MAGA loyalists, the same actors pivoted to accuse Donald Trump of pedophilia and to disseminate Iranian state leaks portraying IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) as an Israeli proxy.'
