Steadfast Stark wins maiden Major title

SWEDEN'S Maja Stark played with poise and precision to claim her maiden Major title at the 80th US Women's Open presented by Ally on Sunday, fending off World No. 1 Nelly Korda of the United States at Erin Hills.
Taking a one-shot lead over Spanish qualifier Julia Lopez Ramirez into the final round, Stark signed off with a solid even-par 72 for a seven-under-par 281 (70, 69, 70, 72) total on a typically challenging USGA course set-up. The 25-year-old finished two shots clear of Korda (71) and Takeda (72), while Ramirez fell back into tied 19th position following a closing 79.
Stark went into the record books as the third Swede to win the championship and hoist the Harton S. Semple Trophy, joining legendary compatriots Liselotte Neumann (1988) and Annika Sorenstam (1995, 1996, 2006). Both Neumann and Sorenstam messaged Stark with words of encouragement following the third round.
'They texted me yesterday and just kind of said, bring it home. It was already cool to just get those texts. Just looking at all the names on the trophy, I love the U.S. Opens. I'm so happy that it's mine now,' said Stark.
Taking a page from Sorenstam's 10-Major book, Stark offset three bogeys with three birdies in a composed final round performance. While both Korda and Japan's Mao Saigo got to within one shot of Stark at different stages of the final round, the Swede kept calm and was able to pull away on the final stretch Saigo, winner of The Chevron Championship earlier this year, carded a closing 73 to share fourth place on four-under-par 284 with Korean Hye-Jin Choi (68) and China's Ruoning Yin (70).
'I didn't look at the leaderboard until I was on 17 when I caught a glimpse of it. I wasn't as nervous as I thought I would be, because it felt like I have control of my game and I know what's going on. It felt like I could just control anything that was thrown at me today,' noted Stark.
The victory was Stark's second success on the LPGA Tour following the 2022 ISPS HANDA World Invitational presented by AVIA Clinics in Northern Ireland, which she won as a non-LPGA member.
The event was co-sanctioned with the Ladies European Tour, where Stark has won six times todate. Korda's joint runner-up finish was her best in 11 U.S. Women's Open starts, dating back to 2013 when she competed as a 14-year-old amateur. She missed the cut at Lancaster Country Club last year.
'Last year definitely put a dagger into my heart. But that's just golf. You're going to lose more than you win a majority of the time. I feel like I learn a lot about myself and my game, and where I need to improve, playing the US Women's Open, because it does test every part of your game,' said Korda, who counts two Major titles among her 15 LPGA Tour victories.
Malaysia's Kelly Tan missed the halfway cut of one-over-par following rounds of 75 and 78. Now competing on the Epson Tour as she bids to regain her LPGA card, the 31-year-old got into the championship by winning the 36-hole qualifier at Vancouver Golf Club.
Defending champion Yuka Saso of Japan (74, 72) and Thai star Jeeno Thitikul (75, 72) were among the notable players who failed to progress to the weekend.

Timely boost for Harimau Malaya's Asian Cup campaign

KUALA LUMPUR: The Harimau Malaya squad welcomed a timely boost ahead of their Group F AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifier match against Vietnam at the National Stadium Bukit Jalil on June 10, following the inclusion of four new heritage players for the country. The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) announced today in a statement that the four players are striker Rodrigo Holgado from Colombian club America de Cali, Sabah FC defender Jon Irazabal from Azerbaijan, Velez Sarsfield striker Imanol Machuca from Argentina, and Istanbul Basaksehir striker Joao Figueiredo from Turkey. 'All four players have been undergoing training sessions with the team for several days and have shown very impressive performances. As quality players, they are well prepared to strengthen the national squad to realize the dreams of all Malaysians,' the statement read. Meanwhile, Machuca, 25, stated that the opportunity to wear the national team colours is very special and a great honor for him. Holgado, 29, admitted that he has fallen in love with the atmosphere in Malaysia and is ready to give his all for the team coached by Peter Cklamovski. Irazabal, 28, shared his excitement about playing for the national squad, describing it as an unique moment, while Figueiredo, 29, expressed his desire to go further with Harimau Malaya on the Asian stage. The inclusion of these four players brings the total number of new heritage players for Malaysia this year to seven. Previously, FAM had secured the services of three heritage players, namely center-back Facundo Garces, who played in Argentina's top league; Portimonense SC midfielder Hector Hevel from Portugal; and left-back Gabriel Palmero, who represents Spanish club CD Tenerife B. Malaysia and Vietnam currently share the top spot in Group F of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers with three points each after both recorded wins in their opening matches. Harimau Malaya began their Group F campaign with a 2-0 victory over Nepal at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Iskandar Puteri, Johor last March, while Vietnam defeated Laos 5-0 at home.

Spain target 'enormously important' Nations League defence

BARCELONA: Spain are aiming to become the first team to defend the Nations League trophy, with Luis de la Fuente's side going from strength to strength on the international stage ahead of next year's World Cup. The coach often reflects on La Roja's triumph at the 2023 tournament, which was an early indicator that a young Spanish side were on their way back to the top. It proved the springboard to Euro 2024 glory, and De la Fuente now wants to continue Spain's resurgence by retaining the title this summer in Germany. It would bode well for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada next summer, where Spain will be among the favourites. They face France in the Nations League semi-finals in Stuttgart before a potential final against either Germany or Portugal. "We attach enormous importance to it – it's almost more difficult than a European Championship, and we want to be the first team to win it twice," De la Fuente told reporters last week. "We want to continue competing at the highest level with these teams." After European Championship wins in 2008 and 2012, sandwiching their 2010 World Cup triumph in South Africa, the Spanish national team experienced a slump. Poor performances at the Russia and Qatar World Cups began to fade from memory, however, as De la Fuente's side beat Italy and Croatia to win the Nations League. The success also helped him personally, with many doubting his credentials and blaming him for an embarrassing defeat by Scotland in Euro 2024 qualifying. The Scots beat De la Fuente's Spain in March 2023 – their last competitive defeat, 23 matches ago. Spain beat Italy, Germany, and France en route to the Euro 2024 final, where they overcame England to claim their first major trophy in 12 years. The worrying sign for the rest of the world is that De la Fuente's Spanish side remain hungry, with many players yet to reach their peak. The team is led by Barcelona's teenage winger Lamine Yamal, who turned 17 on the eve of the Euro final, while on the opposite flank, Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams, 22, also has his best years ahead of him. Barcelona's midfield maestro Pedri, also 22, pulls the strings, while there are emerging talents in other areas – including Porto striker Samu Aghehowa and new Real Madrid signing Dean Huijsen. Despite his focus on younger players, De la Fuente has shown he is not inflexible, turning to Real Betis midfielder Isco. After a superb season in which the former Real Madrid playmaker helped the Andalusians reach the Conference League final, the 33-year-old finally received the call-up he longed for. Some had said De la Fuente should have given Isco a chance last summer, but the coach was vindicated as his team went on to win the Euros. "He's going to add a lot – if we had any doubts, he wouldn't be here," said De la Fuente. "He could have been at the Euros, or not, but those who had to be there, were there." Isco's presence gives Spain even more depth in a midfield packed with quality – and still missing Manchester City's Rodri Hernández, who has yet to return to action after missing most of the season through injury. "In Spain, we are privileged to have many very good footballers," De la Fuente said during the Euros. "I think they are the best players in the world for many reasons." In almost every position, the coach is blessed with multiple strong options, with the team arguably only lacking one elite striker – although that has not held them back. Aghehowa, 21, could grow into that player, though De la Fuente continues to consider all his options – including veteran Álvaro Morata, Dani Olmo as a false nine, or Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored the winner against England. "This is a team, and in that team, everyone contributes their bit to make a stronger, more solid group," said De la Fuente. "Samu is fantastic, Álvaro, Mikel, Dani... we can play in many ways with different players – and that is exactly what our strength is."
