Union warns airport strikes could hit summer holidays

Yahoo8 hours ago

Holidaymakers have been warned of the potential for strike action at Glasgow Airport over the summer as more than 800 workers from five companies are involved in pay disputes.
Unite the union said workers at Glasgow Airport Ltd, ICTS Central Search, Swissport, Menzies Aviation and Falck could be balloted for walkouts.
The union said that if there is no successful resolution to the disputes in the coming days, it will move towards holding votes on industrial action within two weeks.
It warned strikes could "ground planes and passengers".
More than 100 Swissport workers are locked in a dispute about rotas and work-life balance, according to Unite.
It said the company "is demanding that workers at extreme short notice have to work shifts at various times and for various durations, which is directly impacting on their personal lives".
Unite said some Swissport staff are "struggling with chronic fatigue", and walkouts could be held from the middle of July, should members vote for industrial action.
A spokesperson for Swissport said: "We are in dialogue with Unite - the talks so far have been constructive and we remain focused on working together to address the issues being raised."
The disruption warning from Unite covers a number of separate disputes between workers across five companies operating at the airport:
250 ICTS Central Search workers, who deal with passengers directly in the security search area and process them for flights, are currently involved in a dispute over under-staffing, working conditions and pay
120 workers employed by Glasgow Airport Limited have rejected a basic 3.6% pay increase, with staff including airport ambassadors, airside support officers, engineers and managers involved
The same 3.6% pay increase was rejected by 50 Falck firefighters who perform fire safety functions at the airport
300 Menzies Aviation workers, including dispatchers, allocators, airside agents and controllers, have rejected a basic uplift worth around 4.25%
According to the union, all of these disputes have been going on for some time.
Unite's Pat Mcilvogue told BBC Scotland News that talks with the five employers have been ongoing "for months" but claimed they had tabled "frivolous" offers that are below inflation.
"It's not just about the pay, it's about the conditions, the working environment," he said.
"Our members are overstretched in the airport, suffer from fatigue.
"There's poor rostering, there's poor organisation of work, staffing levels are low."
He urged the companies to get round the table with Unite this week and to "table meaningful offers".
Mr Mcilvogue added: "Let's work with Unite to avoid any disruption for the travelling public in July.
"We've got more than a month to fix this before any potential action takes place."
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said the companies involved "are all highly profitable and can easily afford to give our members better pay and working conditions."
A spokesman for Glasgow Airport said: "We have ongoing dialogue with Unite regarding a pay deal for our direct workforce."
Phil Lloyd, senior vice president UK at Menzies Aviation, said the company was committed to seeking a resolution and had made "an enhanced offer".
He added: "We hope to reach an agreement which is workable for both the business and our employees at Glasgow airport.
"We continue to work towards an agreeable solution to protect services for our airline and airport partners and their customers."
Falck and ICTS Central Search have been approached for comment.

These 5 Precious Metals Stock This Week Surged To Even Higher Highs

These five – four of the NYSE and one on the Nasdaq – blasted to new price highs mid-week before pulling back a bit on Friday. A widely followed gold stocks ETF also showed a new high. Two factors are at work: inflation and fear. That Donald Trump tariffs are basically inflationary have money managers looking for hedges and the classic for that is precious metals. That's one of the reasons for this week's price run-up in silver and silver stocks – now playing catch-up with the yellow metal. Fear is the sense globally that the U. S. may have lost its economic bearings with the tariffs nonsense. So, the dollar keeps dropping and money finds its way into precious metals again. AngloGold Ashanti AngloGold Ashanti daily 6 7 25. NatWest apologises to millions of customers locked out of app

NatWest has apologised to millions of customers locked out of its app in the latest IT outage to hit a major UK bank. The high street bank said it was investigating a problem caused by an update to the app that was rolled out late on Thursday, leaving customers unable to access their accounts through the app since shortly after 9am on Friday. It will be disruptive to the more than 10 million customers who use the NatWest banking app to access their account every day. The lender said its other services – including card payments, in-branch, online and telephone banking – were operating as normal. A NatWest spokesperson said: 'We are aware that customers are experiencing difficulties accessing the NatWest mobile banking app. We're really sorry about this and working to fix it as quickly as possible. Customers can still use online and telephone banking, or visit a branch.' The app outage comes at a time when NatWest, like most high street banks, is pushing more customers to its online app while shutting branches. NatWest is due to close 53 more branches throughout 2025, leaving it with 431. The bank said last month that more than 80% of its active current account customers were doing their banking online, while 97% of new accounts were opened digitally. While the outage was not linked to a cyber-attack, heightened attention is being paid to banks' resilience after a spate of attacks that have disrupted retailers including Harrods, Co-op and Marks & Spencer. Banks' IT systems have come under increased scrutiny in recent months, with customers at Britain's largest banks and building societies suffering the equivalent of more than one month of IT failures between January 2023 and February 2025. Those figures did not include the full impact of an outage at Barclays that started at the end of January and affected 56% of online payments during the crucial payday period for many employees. It expects to pay a total of between £5m and £7.5m in compensation to customers for 'inconvenience or distress'. There has since been further disruption at Barclays. NatWest racked up the most time lost to outages over that period, amounting to 194 hours, through 13 incidents, for which it paid out £348,000. HSBC paid out £232,697 to its customers after 32 incidents led to 176 hours of disruption. Commenting on the latest outage, the Which? Money editor, Jenny Ross, said: 'Banks are encouraging more and more of us to rely on apps to do our essential banking, so when these go down it can be devastating. 'In the worst cases there's a risk that impacted NatWest customers may miss important bill payments, find themselves unable to pay for essential services or risk going overdrawn – issues which could come with knock-on effects like late payment or overdraft penalties, or affect their ability to get credit or borrow money.' Ross said NatWest should keep customers updated and ensure that they are swiftly compensated where appropriate. Last week, the UK government sold its final shares in NatWest Group, ending 17 years of state ownership since the £45bn taxpayer bailout that saved the bank – formerly known as Royal Bank of Scotland – from collapse at the height of the 2008 financial crisis. Samsung Makes New Free Offer To Galaxy S25 Edge Buyers

Samsung's new Galaxy S25 Edge is the slimmest ever Galaxy phone. One month after its launch and just weeks after the last serious Galaxy S25 discount, the Galaxy S25 Edge has already been included in its first major promotion. Samsung U.K. is running a familiar deal that gives away a free Galaxy Tab A9 Plus, worth £359 ($485), with all Galaxy S25 Edge purchases. This is alongside up to £468 trade-in value (more on this later), 2TB of cloud storage for six months, three months of Samsung Care Plus and 30% off select accessories. The trade-in values, free subscriptions and discounted accessories are commonly used makeweights in Samsung promotions. The headline deal here is the free tablet bundled with the phone. The Korean company has a habit of throwing in an expensive freebie with smartphones. The Galaxy Tab A9 Plus appears to be the most popular, but I have seen Samsung bundle a free Chromebook, free earbuds, a free Galaxy watch and even the Galaxy S25 itself given away for free. Readers of my deals stories will know that the sacrifice for these freebies is historically poor trade-in valuations compared to U.S. pricing. But, in an unexpected move, that appears to have suddenly changed. Samsung U.K. is now offering equivalent prices for used devices compared to Samsung U.S.—even beating American valuations in some cases. For example, U.K. shoppers will get £341 ($461.41) for their Galaxy S22 Ultra compared to the U.S. store's $500 price. Things get better with the S23 Ultra, which is priced at £449 ($607.54), beating the U.S. shop's $580 valuation. I don't know what inspired Samsung to u-turn on U.K. and European trade-in pricing, but there may be a clue in the Galaxy S25 Edge's early sales information. Samsung's new ultra slim Galaxy S25 Edge. According to its industry sources, SamMobile claim's that Samsung's early Galaxy S25 Edge sales are below expectations. The site also theorizes that the company's lack of sales data in Korea and pre-order deals—that improved as the days went on—are signs that the device hasn't sold well. This wouldn't surprise me because it is an entirely new device that doesn't have the history of the main flagship line behind it to inspire confidence in consumers. I'm also not entirely convinced the Edge will be around for the long run. A Samsung representative I spoke with explained that the company had to redesign essential components to fit into the Edge's smaller chassis. I suspect these new design methods will be repurposed into other flagship devices, like the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7. Samsung has done this before with the original Galaxy Note Edge phone back in 2014, which disappeared after one launch, with the curved screen technology being subsumed into the main Galaxy S line. The combination of the Edge potentially not selling widely, the newly enhanced trade-in prices, and the possibility that it is a one-and-done device, alongside this early freebie promotion, could mean more aggressive discounts on the horizon.
