The Tommy Gemmell Community Project is raising funds for a bronze statue of the footballing icon to be placed in his hometown.
Gemmell scored the first goal in Celtic's 1967 victory, which secured the team affectionately known as the Lisbon Lions the title of champions of Europe.
The statue would be placed in Craigneuk, where he grew up and lived when he first signed for Celtic at the age of 16.
His family, including his widow, Mary Gemmell, are part of the project, and she told The Glasgow Times how "important" it is to have the "special" man honoured there.
Tommy Gemmell won the European Cup with Celtic(Image: SNS Images) Scottish actor and proud Celtic fan Martin Compston has given his support to the bid for the statue, describing Tommy as "one of Scotland's greatest ever players" and also "one of our greatest characters too."
His support is joined by fellow actor Tony Roper, who shared a touching tribute to Tommy while sharing a story about him having hidden talents.
Roper tells the tale of being in Barcelona with their partners and going to an Argentinian steakhouse.
After eating, they're treated to entertainment from Argentinian Tango dancers who dazzle them with a complicated routine.
Once they're finished, he explains that Gemmell got up to dance with Roper's wife, Isabella, who had been a dancer for most of her life.
Gemmell then perfectly executed the technical dance routine, and Roper said, "he was sensational".
Roper finishes his story with a plea: "If you don't think a world-class footballer, who could do the Argentinian tango perfectly without breaking his partner's feet and also came from Craigneuk, doesn't deserve a statue there, I don't know what you need to do?"
A long list of Celtic legends, including John Hartson, James Forrest, and Daizen Maeda have supported the cause.
John Hartson spoke of the "wonderful man" and "great player" and how he was "privileged to meet him a few times".
Forrest and Maeda were videoed in their cars with t-shirts created by the project, which read "Lisbon 1967 Gemmell Craigneuk", and both shared the message 'support the Tommy Gemmell Community Project".
Gemmell's widow Mary said: "The statue is the main focus right now, but the idea behind it being a community project is that we want it to be so much more than a statue.
"Tommy was so proud of where he came from and was such a believer in helping people however he could – he went to every charity event he could.
"So to have his legacy be helping the whole community would be special for such a special man."

His work includes statues of the Beatles and football legends like Sir Alex Ferguson, Brian Clough, and Peter Taylor.
Further money raised would go towards helping the Craigneuk community.
The team project has a few events lined up, with a dinner dubbed an evening with John Hartson and special guests at Dalziel Park Hotel on August 15, and a golf day organised for September 5th.

Shocking moment Love Island star Shakira brands new bombshell Yasmin a 't***' as tensions flare while they secretly watch the boys flirt with THREE new girls

The Love Island girls were thrown into a frenzy on Friday night as tensions flared while they watched the boys meet the series' three latest bombshells. After Blu Chegini became the second islander to be dumped from the Majorca villa, the newly-coupled-up boys and single man Shea Mannings were afforded a boys' night away. But after the six lads started discussing their new romances, they were interrupted by three new girls - teaching assistant Malisha, 24, commercial banking executive Yasmin, 24, and insurance development executive Emily, 24. In another major shock, the girls back in the villa were watching exactly what the boys were getting up to on a secret camera for the first time in Love Island history. Unaware the girls were watching on, the bombshells didn't shy away from flirting with the boys, and Yasmin even had some choice words about some of the existing couples - prompting a fuming reaction back in the villa. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Making her opinions clear, Yasmin insisted it was 'bulls***' that American Islander Toni would consider a move to the UK, before saying Ben 'crawled back' to Shakira and criticising Tommy for being 'too comfortable' with Meg. And the girls were unimpressed with her brazen remarks as Shakira shockingly branded her a 't***' while Meg also referred to one of the bombshells as a 'b***h' as tensions flared before they even met the newbies. Making their bombshell arrival, 'serial flirter' Emily sat down herself next to Conor, while Malisha was next to Dejon and Yasmin sat by Tommy as they wasted no time getting to know the boys. 'Tell us what your situation is in the villa at the moment,' Yasmin said. With the lads blissfully ignorant of the fact they are being watched, they didn't hold back with their answers, leaving the ladies back in the villa in shock. As the conversation moved on to Conor, he answered: 'I'm talking to Toni, she's American, I know that's a bit of a thing but she said she'd be happy to come (to Ireland).' Holding nothing back, Yasmin responded: 'Bull****,' much to the dismay of the girls back in the villa. Things went from bad to worse for Toni as Conor later admitted that Emily is exactly his type. The conversation then moved on to Ben, who explained that after a couple of days away from Shakira, they had coupled up once again - with Yasmin cheekily quipping: 'Oh so you went crawling back to her did you?' Moments later, Yasmin turned her attention to Tommy, who is currently coupled up with Irish girl Meg. 'I'm not singling you out when I say this, but do you think you're too comfortable with Meg at the moment?' the 24-year-old asked. The question prompted an angry response from Shakira watching on poolside, who cried: 'You know what, I was all for being nice to the bombshells but she seems like a bit of a t***!' The bombshells' flirty exchange with the lads also saw Dejon and Tommy - who seem happily coupled up - admit the new girls have 'made things interesting' before the three new girls picked a boy each to have a 'private chat' with. Yasmin chose Harry, who has ruffled feathers since entering the villa on day one, with Emily taking Irishman Conor and Malisha choosing Dejon as the episode reached its climax. Before series 12 began on Monday, ITV producers promised the most dramatic series yet. After Sophie Lee became the first islander to be dumped from the villa, new lads Remell and Shea became this series' first male bombshells. Newbie Shea Mannings and Blu Chegini were left single and a shock text revealed that they would have to pick which of them would go home in a show first Remell, who quickly found a spark with Scottish girl Alima, raised eyebrows moments after his arrival as he shockingly admitted to bedding five girls in one night. It came before Blu Chegini became the first boy to be dumped after brutally being voted off by his castmates. He and Shea had been left single after the latest recoupling, with a shock text revealing they would have to pick which of them would go home in a show first. With the pair left fuming, Blu was quick to state, 'I ain't f***ing leaving', with Shea also making it clear he wasn't willing to leave, before they forced their co-stars to make the call. However after giving the vote up to their fellow islanders, Blu ultimately received the fewest votes and left the villa. Love Island next airs on Sunday June 16 at 9pm on ITVX and ITV2. Snoop Dogg says emotional goodbye to beloved family member after tragedy

Snoop Dogg, who won an American Music Award for Favourite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and a Primetime Emmy Award more recently, shared two videos on Instagram, writing he misses his French bulldog Juelz Snoop Dogg's beloved dog - given to him as a birthday gift from Wiz Khalifa - has died. The rapper expressed his sadness in two Instagram videos following the loss of French bulldog Juelz. Wiz Khalifa gave his friend the pooch in 2014 as a present for his 43rd birthday. ‌ But in a video yesterday, Snoop, now 53, told the fans the upsetting news. Sitting in the front seat of his car, soundtracked by Weldon Irvine's Morning Sunrise, the hip hop legend shared his grief. The father of four, from Long Beach, California, wrote: "Rip @juelzbroadus [crying emoji]Thank wiz for giving him to me.(sic)" ‌ The rapper then shared a second video, which featured a montage of Juelz with Snoop and his family and friends over the years, with Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth's See You Again playing over the top. He wrote: "Miss my dogg @juelzbroadus (sic)" 'Pocket bully' dog overpowers pensioner as armed police rush to fatal attack Juelz had his own Instagram account, which had thousands of followers and documented his adventures with his famous owner over the years. Meanwhile, Snoop - who has another French bulldog, Frank - recently admitted he is keen to open a food stall at Celtic Park, the Scottish home of his favourite soccer side Celtic. He told Scotland's Sunday Mail, which is our sister title: 'There has always been the opinion that food at sports stadiums is never good but that ain't got to be the case. ‌ 'People know that Snoop is a cook and I would love to bring a pop up burger to a sports stadium to show fans that food at stadiums can be good. It's got to be Celtic Park man, I mean where else am I going to bring it. "The secret to a good burger is the love in the preparation. The ground beef has got to be mixed with some secret spices, then add a good quality cheese and some maple cured bacon. The Celtic fans are gonna love it, and to make sure they are just right, Snoop is going to be serving them himself.' But Snoop has no interest in offering his food to Celtic's great rivals rangers. He said: "Am I going to bring my burgers to Rangers as well? Nah, I think we will give that a miss!' Snoop revealed back in 2012 that he wanted to buy shares in Celtic after watching the Parkhead side beat Barcelona in the Champions League in November that year. At the time he said: "I got a lot of interest in soccer. It's not a new thing for hip hop stars to invest in sports teams but it is a new thing for hip hop stars to invest in soccer teams...I see how passionate Celtic fans are about their team and I could see myself making an investment if any of the board wanted to sell...I want to bring a bit of Snoop to things."

Any member of the public or an official body can nominate someone for an honour. UK nationals and citizens of 15 Commonwealth 'realms', of which the King is head of state, are eligible for nomination. People living or working overseas, whose achievements were made in another country or in the UK and have a significant international element, can be nominated too. Nominations are submitted to the Cabinet Office's Honours and Appointments Secretariat, which oversees the honours system. A group of 10 independent honours committees, each covering a specialist subject area such as sport or health, consider nominations. King Charles ultimately decides who is recognised in the Birthday Honours list (Image: Temilade Adelaja/PA Wire) The recommendations of these groups of independent experts and senior civil servants are passed on to the Prime Minister and, ultimately, the King for approval. There are two sets of honours per year, at New Year and in June on the King's official birthday. Once all recipients have been decided and checked, the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood at St James's Palace arranges investitures for the presentation of medals. These ceremonies, held about 30 times a year at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and, occasionally, the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, and are hosted by senior royals. The most senior ranks of the Order of the British Empire are Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GBE) and Knight or Dame Commander (KBE or DBE). Recommended reading: The order's ranks, after Knighthood or Damehood, are Commander (CBE), Officer (OBE) and Member (MBE). Other honours include Companion of Honour (CH), British Empire Medal (BEM), Royal Victorian Order (RVO), Order of the Bath and Order of St Michael and St George. There is also Royal Red Cross (RRC), King's Police Medal (KPM), King's Fire Service Medal (KFSM) and King's Ambulance Service Medal (KAM).
