Fan's wild dive for foul ball a lone highlight for dreadful Athletics

New York Post5 days ago

Sometimes the best moments of a game do not happen on the field.
That is precisely what occurred in the Athletics' game Wednesday night.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, a foul ball was hit just above the safety netting at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, on the path to land right on top of one of the dugouts.

That is when it was one fan's time to shine.
One fan at Wednesday's A's-Twins game went all-out for a foul ball.
Without hesitation, she dove on top of the dugout, trying to secure the souvenir.

While she initially could not come up with it, the woman still got the ball in the end.
NBC Sports California announcer Chris Caray had a hunch that this wasn't the first time she dove like that.
'She has to be a former volleyball player,' Caray said. '[The dive], it's like a pancake when you are trying to dig out the ball.'

The woman might have been the only Athletics fan going home happy, as they lost to the Twins, 6-1, and watched their losing streak extend to nine games.
During the skid, the Athletics have let up double-digit runs five times.
Not only did this fan come away with the foul, but she got the picture to prove it.

This poor run of form is nothing new.
The A's only won a total of seven games in May and sit at the bottom of the AL West with just 23 wins.
Maybe this heroic dive by the fan can spark the Athletics to break their winless skid.

A's outfielder Denzel Clarke makes great catch to rob a home run vs. Angels

It's only June and we might have the catch of the year already after Athletics outfielder Denzel Clarke pulled off an incredible home run robbery. The Athletics are in Anaheim playing the Los Angeles Angels, and in the bottom of the first inning of Monday's contest, Nolan Schanuel took Grant Holman's splitter deep to center field. It looked like it was going to go over the wall to give the Angels an early 1-0 lead. Advertisement Instead, Clarke scaled the wall, reached over and caught the ball in one of the best catches one could make. Clarke got so high he almost went over the wall, but he was hyped as he landed back in the field of play. Mostly everyone, especially Holman, in the stadium couldn't believe what they saw. It was an impressive catch for a ball that went 398 feet to center field. Monday was just Clarke's 16th game in the big leagues after he was called up in May. Taken in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Cal State Northridge, Clarke entered the night with a .224 batting average with one home run and three RBI, but he already has an all-time highlight play in his career. Advertisement It may just be something Clarke does as this isn't the first time he's robbed a homer. On May 30 against the Toronto Blue Jays, Clarke robbed Alejandro Kirk from a home run as he scaled the wall to catch the ball back in his home country. The catch against the Angels come three days after he had another incredible snag against the Baltimore Orioles, as he turned on the jets and hauled in the ball before hitting the wall to steal a hit away from Jorge Mateo. Nolan Schanuel's walk-off single gives Angels the win over the Athletics

Nolan Schanuel hit a single into shallow center field in the 10th inning for the first walk-off hit of his career to drive in Jo Adell and give the Angels a 2-1 win over the Athletics on Tuesday night. Reid Detmers (2-2) struck out two of three batters to strand the automatic runner in the top of the 10th. Hogan Harris (1-1) took the loss for the A's, who have lost 22 of 26 games. The Angels trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth when Travis d'Arnaud hit A's left-hander T.J. McFarland's first pitch for a pinch-hit homer and a 1-1 tie. Angels starter José Soriano gave up one run and two hits and struck out a career-best 12 in seven innings. He walked two. He threw a career-high 110 pitches, 71 for strikes, and induced 22 swinging strikes. The A's Mitch Spence, making his second start since being moved from the bullpen, gave up three hits, struck out four and walked none in five scoreless innings. Soriano was virtually untouchable through five no-hit innings in which he racked up nine strikeouts and walked one. He lost his no-hit bid in the sixth when Brent Rooker drove an RBI double to left-center field just beyond the reach of a diving Adell for a 1-0 A's lead. Key Moment Veteran right-hander Hunter Strickland, who signed a minor league deal on May 6, escaped a runner-on-second, no-out jam in the eighth and has not allowed a run in 11 innings over nine appearances with the Angels. Key Stat D'Arnaud's eighth-inning shot was the second pinch-hit homer of his career. His first came for the Atlanta Braves against the Colorado Rockies on Sept. 4, 2021. Up Next Athletics left-hander JP Sears (5-5, 5.21 ERA) will oppose Angels right-hander Kyle Hendricks (2-6, 5.34 ERA) in Wednesday's series finale.
