Tackling fires and rugby players - Scoble is living the dream

BBC News09-04-2025

Women's Six Nations: France v WalesVenue: Stade Amedee-Domenech, Brive Date: Saturday, 12 April Kick-off: 12:45 BSTCoverage: Watch on BBC One Wales, BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport Online, listen on BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and BBC Sounds
Tackling raging fires or ferocious rugby players is not for the faint hearted, yet it is something Wales prop Jenni Scoble embraces with total commitment. The 32-year from Cardiff is juggling a Test career with being a fulltime firefighter with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. She joined the service in 2023 and says it had "always been a dream" to do so."I held off from going for it and then just had the confidence one year to have a go," Scoble said."I applied one or two times and then I got in. It's an incredible career, it doesn't really feel like a job. Some days are obviously tough, but I've always wanted to do it."Scoble follows in the line of several internationals who have combined careers in the fire service, with the likes of Naomi Thomas, Rebecca Openshaw-Rowe, Rafiuke Taylor and Shona Powell-Hughes Wakley all coming before her.
Homegrown talent
Scoble has been somewhat of a surprise package in this year's Women's Six Nations, starting at tight-head in the first two games. She is one of just a handful of players who play rugby in Wales, with the majority of the squad plying their trade in England's Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR).Her career started at Llandaff North before two seasons with Gwalia Lightning in the Celtic Challenge, which brought Scoble to the attention of Wales' new head coach Sean Lynn, who is clearly a fan. While Wales suffered a heavy defeat by England at the Principality Stadium last time out, it was a pinch-me moment for Scoble. Not only did she celebrate scoring against the world's best team, it was actually her first ever try in rugby. "Insane, it hasn't really settled in yet, it was amazing," she told BBC Sport Wales."I was shocked when I did it and had to resettle myself and get back into the game. It was just incredible and the noise, I've never experienced anything like that."It was my first time playing in front of a home crowd and to have that as a record crowd was amazing."I think I need to have five minutes after the Six Nations to let it all settle in."
While most of Lynn's squad are full-time professionals with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), Scoble is contracted only for the camps. She said it is a "bit of a juggle" managing training and matches with her job, but that both parties have been "really understanding"."To get the time off, I need a lot of help from colleagues and whenever I've had a difficult time to get a shift covered there has always been someone randomly across south Wales who has put their hand up to help me. It's been amazing," Scoble said. But with the Rugby World Cup looming later this summer, Scoble admits she may need to take a bit more time away from the fire service.Asked if she could ever give up her career, she said: "I don't think I could, it's hard to choose. "I'm in a very lucky position of being able to do the two. It's a job I love and enjoy and I don't want to let go."
Keep calm and carry on
In the meantime, Scoble says the jobs complement each other."Definitely the fitness and then mindset stuff," she said."You train to deal with fires in difficult situations, so I think that has helped me quite a bit in terms of being able to stay calm."The starting shirt comes with quite a lot of pressure, but my training has really helped me to remain calm and focused on my job."The team stuff as well, obviously I'm part of a watch, you get used to being in a team and those are transferable skills."And while most consider Scoble as a role model, especially to young girls, she modestly says: "I just feel like I'm being me, doing my job."She adds: "But it is amazing to think that's what young people get to see, that a woman can do a job as a firefighter and play rugby. It's hard to realise that I'm doing that sometimes."Scoble returns to action with Wales this weekend as the team travel to Brive to take on France.

Women's French Open Final Prediction & Sabalenka vs Gauff Best Bets

Women's French Open final betting tips Aryna Sabalenka to beat Coco Gauff 2-1 - 13/5 Bet365 Over 22.5 total games - 1/1 William Hill The 2025 Women's French Open final takes place on Saturday, as Aryna Sabalenka meets Coco Gauff to decide this year's champion at Roland Garros. This year's final pits the top two seeds against one another, as world number one Sabalenka makes her first final appearance in Paris, bidding to add to her Australian Open and US Open titles. The Belarusian overcame four-time French Open winner Iga Swiatek 7-6, 4-6, 6-0 in the semi-finals on Thursday, sending a strong message to the women's game ahead of the final. Betting sites have responded to that performance by making the 27-year-old the odds-on favourite to beat world number two Gauff on Philippe-Chatrier on Saturday. The American is contending for a second final at Roland Garros and is looking to add to her solitary major title, which was won at the US Open in 2023 against Sabalenka. She's a best price of 17/10 to claim her second major title, but may find it tough to derail the in-form Sabalenka. Women's French Open final betting tips World number one meets world number two in a battle for a maiden French Open title, and fans could really be in for a treat in a match between two players with little to separate each other. Sabalenka and Gauff have previously faced off 10 times in the past with each player winning five apiece, though it was the Belarusian who won the only meeting of 2025 so far, beating Gauff 6-3, 7-6 in the final of the Madrid Open. While Gauff has also been in fantastic form of late – especially on clay – she heads into the match as an underdog, perhaps mainly due to that loss to Sabalenka in Madrid. Nevertheless, the conditions may suit Gauff slightly more than in Spain, and her combination of a faster serve and better defensive play means she presents a tougher opponent than Iga Swiatek in some ways. However, Sabalenka comes into the final as the in-form player on the tour, making her second major final of the year and looking to land a fourth title of 2025. A victory over four-time Roland Garros champion Swiatek is one of the most important wins of her career so far and rightly makes her the favourite to land the title on Saturday, with that match including the only set that the 27-year-old has dropped all tournament. It all makes for a fascinating final match-up on Court Philippe-Chatrier, and though tennis betting sites think a 2-0 win for Sabalenka is the most likely outcome at 11/8, the world number one may not have it all her own way. With that in mind, a wager on Sabalenka to win 2-1 offers better value at 13/5 with Bet365. Women's French Open final prediction Though several bookmakers don't seem to think this will be as close a match as it looks on paper, it is difficult to see the world number one winning at a canter. Despite only giving up one set so far in the tournament, she is facing a player who is in similarly good form and who has beaten her in half of their previous meetings. While that straight-sets Madrid Open win for Sabalenka could prove telling in the end, she is likely to face a test that is equally as stern as that offered by Swiatek, who grabbed a set back before falling 6-0 in the decider. With that match having seen 29 games played – and with the Madrid final having seen 22 – we think a wager on over 22.5 total games in the match is a strong option. French Open 2025 semi-finals: Musetti v Alcaraz, Sinner v Djokovic

Update: Date: 2025-06-06T12:00:35.000Z Title: Preamble Content: Salut et bienvenue à Roland-Garros 2025 – 13ième jour! Maintenant alors! Just yesterday, we experienced the end of an era. Iga Swiatek may well return to win more French Opens and grand slams, but after her defeat – and the manner of it – she is, now and forever, fully vincible. The pack are coming. Today, though, we might just experience the end of an aeon. Novak Djokovic is indisputably the greatest men's tenniser of all time, satisfying both the number test and the eye test. He's not the most beautiful, charismatic or creative, nor does he have the best hands or feel. But if you needed someone to play for your life or your chilli McCoys, you'd have no choice but to pick him. However, he's not won a major since September 2023 and in that time, Jannik Sinner, his opponent this evening, and Carlos Alcaraz, playing this afternoon, have completed their coup, sharing the five subsequent titles between them. Sinner, winner of 19 grand slam matches in a row, has sauntered through the draw without dropping a set; Alcaraz has improved through the rounds and is the defending champion. It's true that Djokovic produced a performance astounding even by his astounding standards to eliminate him in the last eight of the Australian Open, but the hamstring strain the process forced upon him meant he could not complete his semi-final. And, though he is currently fit, we can no longer be certain that the ultimate bionic man has in him another performance of the quality and intensity that devastated Alexander Zverev on Wednesday. And make no mistake, he will need one. But first, Alcaraz takes on Lorenzo Musetti, the surging young Italian who also made the last four of last year's Wimbledon. The pair have met twice on clay recently, Alcaraz winning over three sets in the Monte Carlo final and in two tight sets in the Italian Open semis. Which is to say Musetti a very fine and very stylish all-court player, full of confidence and zest … who hasn't yet shown us he has the firepower necessary to beat the best on the biggest occasions. So as we wait for a potentially epochal day to unfold, the likelihood is that the new firm asserts itself once more, Sinner and Alcaraz too good, too young and too nasty to be denied. But if history has taught us anything, it's that with Djokovic and with tennis, the impossible is possible. On y va! Play: 2.30pm local. 1.30pm BST.
