Tribals' concerns on Great Nicobar project under examination: Minister

Indian Express26-05-2025

Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jual Oram on Monday said that concerns raised by the tribal communities from the Great Nicobar island regarding the Great Nicobar Infrastructure project are 'under examination'.
Oram and MoS for Tribal Affairs, Durgadas Uikey, were speaking at Oram's residence while addressing the media on the initiatives and achievements of the ministry in the last 11 years of the NDA government.
Oram was asked during the media interaction whether his ministry has examined complaints regarding alleged violations of Forest Rights Act in the archipelago during implementation of the project in Nicobar, Oram said, 'It is under examination'. 'In Parliament too this question was raised in Rajya Sabha, I had answered it. We are examining documents submitted,' Oram said but did not offer more details.
'In a tribal or Schedule area we have to check whether a Gram Sabha was held, what were its decisions and recommendations and whether they were violated. While we look at the conduct of a Gram Sabha, the environmental impact assessment is looked at by another ministry,' he said.
The Parliament question Oram was referring to was asked by TMC MP Saket Gokhale in March. Gokhale had sought to know what action the Ministry had taken on a letter of the tribal council of the Great Nicobar Island withdrawing its no-objection certificate (NOC) to the denotification of a tribal reserve for the mega infrastructure project.
The tribal council had in November 2022 revoked its no-objection certificate to the denotification of 84.1 sq km of tribal reserve and diversion of 130.75 sq km of forests, alleging that it was done without consent of indigenous inhabitants of the island and by concealing information.

Lalu Prasad wants to see his son who failed Class 9 become King of Bihar: Prashant Kishor

Ahead of the Assembly election in Bihar, Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) founder Prashant Kishor took a jibe at Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad and his son, former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, stating that Mr. Prasad wants his 'son who did not pass Class 9' to become the 'King of Bihar'. Mr. Kishor has been criss-crossing the State for his Bihar Badalv yatra (journey for change in Bihar) and raising issue of unemployment among youth. Mr. Kishor founded the Jan Suraaj on October 2, 2024 to offer a 'political alternative' to the people and had said he would contest the upcoming election. 'We need to learn from Laluji how to worry about children. His son did not pass Class 9, but he is so worried about his child that he wants him to become the 'King of Bihar'. When we say this, people say we complain about him. No, we are praising Laluji... but you should look at your condition, your child has passed school and has graduated as well, but he still is not getting a job, even as a peon,' the former political strategist told a crowd at Siwan on Thursday (June 5, 2025). Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to address a public meeting in Siwan on June 20. The Assembly election is due in October-November. On June 4, while addressing a public rally in neighbouring Saran district, Mr, Kishor had said that the 'strong response to his rallies shows the sheer frustration of the people over corruption in Bihar and reflects a collective desire for change'. A recent pre-poll survey had suggested that Mr. Kishor's political graph is rising. 'My popularity shows the growing aspiration of people who want to see real change in Bihar,' he said, adding, 'The people who have gathered here are not my relatives, nor are they from my caste. They come from diverse sections of society but what unites them is their shared frustration with the corruption that plagues Bihar. There is a collective desire for change.' In the bye-elections to four seats in Bihar in November 2024, the newly formed Jan Suraaj Party drew a blank, though it had garnered 10% of votes. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidates won all four, with the Bharatiya Janata Party winning Ramgarh and Tarari seats, the Janata Dal (United) bagging Belaganj and the former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi–led Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) securing Imamganj. Jan Suraaj candidates were instrumental in the defeat of Opposition RJD candidates in their strongholds of Ramgarh and Belaganj. Mr. Kishor plans to cover all Assembly constituencies over the next 120 days before the election begins. Throughout his yatra, he has urged people to vote for 'change'. The upcoming Assembly election would be a pitched battle between the NDA, which includes the BJP, JD(U), Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), HAM(S) and the Upendra Kushwaha-led Rashtriya Lok Samata Party and the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) comprising the RJD, Congress, Left parties and the Mukesh Sahani-led Vikasheel Insaan Party. Mr. Kishor has attempted to position himself as the third political alternative for voters. In May 2025, former close aide of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and former Union Minister R.C.P. Singh had merged his party, the Aap Sabki Aawaz, with Jan Suraaj. 'Some fence sitters may join hands with Mr. Kishor in the coming days,' said political analyst Nawal Kishor Choudhary.

India Commits $20 Billion For Maritime Infrastructure Development: Sarbananda Sonowal

New Delhi: India has committed $20 billion for infrastructure development focused on enhancing multimodal logistics, port connectivity, and trade facilitation, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Thursday. Delivering the keynote speech at the India Country Session in Oslo and highlighted India's growing maritime capabilities, including a favourable policy-induced investment environment, proven shipbuilding strength, circular economy efforts, and innovative financing plans to accelerate sectoral growth, he said: "Under the able and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is moving decisively toward the goals of Viksit Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat. These goals envisage India as a modern, self-reliant, inclusive, and globally engaged economy." In this journey, the maritime sector is central - not just as a driver of growth, but as an enabler of resilience, sustainability, and strategic connectivity. "India has launched wide-ranging efforts to expand port infrastructure, integrate logistics systems, and improve ease of doing business for the private sector. These reforms are already bearing fruit in the form of increased port efficiency, stronger cargo flows, and rising investor confidence," he said. The Shipping Minister also highlighted strengthening of maritime connectivity and supply chains with strategic corridors like the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), the Eastern Maritime Corridor (EMC), and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). "India is working to become a credible and competitive alternative. Through policy incentives, ease of doing business, and infrastructure enhancement, we are laying the foundation for India to emerge as one of the top five shipbuilding nations by 2047," he said. India is establishing three Green Hydrogen Hub Ports — Kandla, Tuticorin, and Paradip — to support the manufacturing of green hydrogen and its derivatives and to pioneer the use of alternative fuels in the maritime domain. "We are also proud to lead under the IMO's Green Voyage 2050 initiative, assisting developing countries in their energy transitions," he added. India's maritime digital ecosystem is undergoing a transformation. Initiatives such as ONOP (One Nation-One Port Process), National Logistics Portal (Marine), and MAITRI – Virtual Trade Corridor are creating a unified national platform for port services and EXIM trade. "These efforts are improving operational transparency, reducing transaction time and building real-time data systems. We are also engaging with global partners to establish Virtual Trade Corridors that will digitally connect ports, enabling seamless cargo movement and reducing bottlenecks," said the minister.
