Werder Bremen have sacked coach Ole Werner after he refused to sign a new contract with the club.
Werner's deal was due to expire in June 2026 and having led Bremen to an eighth place finish this term, reports were that the club were willing to extend his three-and-a-half year stay.
The 37-year-old however, turned down the opportunity of an extension over the weekend and with just a year left to go on that deal, Bremen have decided to act.
A statement on their website on Tuesday confirmed the the news that Werner had been released for "clarity and continuity reasons".
"We deeply regret Ole's decision, as we could have envisioned a long-term collaboration with him," the club stated
"We thank Ole for the last three and a half years and for the outstanding work he has done at Werder Bremen. It has been a very trusting collaboration with him. Ole has continuously developed the team and had a huge influence on Werder's successful stabilisation in the Bundesliga."

Liverpool Are Keeping A Keen Eye On This Bundesliga Forward: Should Slot Get Him On Board?

Liverpool Are Keeping A Keen Eye On This Bundesliga Forward: Should Slot Get Him On Board? On Sunday's edition of the Here We Go podcast, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that Liverpool are keeping a keen eye on Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike. Romano said, 'There are many clubs appreciating Hugo Ekitike. It's true that Liverpool like him. Advertisement 'They [Liverpool] had some contacts to understand the situation. But at the moment the focus for Liverpool is Florian Wirtz – coming soon, Milos Kerkez – coming soon. 'They are not advancing for Ekitike but they made some calls over recent weeks to understand the situation of the player, the costs. 'So, he's a player they like, but let's see if they decided to go strong on him or another one. It also depends on the outgoings.' Ekitike's Impressive Form In German Football Ekitike had an impressive campaign in the Bundesliga after he put in a lot of productive displays as the focal point of Frankfurt's attack. The French striker registered 22 goals and picked up 12 assists in 48 matches for the German club last season across multiple competitions. Advertisement The 22-year-old deserves a ton of credit for attempting 4.0 shots per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. He kept 38.6% of his attempts on target and even distributed the ball well based on his pass completion rate of 75.5% in the German first division (stats via FRANKFURT AM MAIN, GERMANY – APRIL 17: Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt inspects the pitch prior to the UEFA Europa League 2024/25 Quarter Final Second Leg match between Eintracht Frankfurt and Tottenham Hotspur at Deutsche Bank Park on April 17, 2025 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. (Photo by) Should Liverpool Boss Arne Slot Get Ekitike On Board? Ekitike excels at finding some space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He has got the eye to cut open the opposition defence with a killer pass in the final third and has proven himself to be a lethal finisher in the Bundesliga. The French centre-forward can also make some clever runs with the ball up top. Standing at 1.90m, he is a strong presence in the air as well. However, it remains to be seen whether the Frankfurt star can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League. Advertisement Ekitike would undoubtedly add plenty of goals to Liverpool head coach Arne Slot's attack. He has what it takes to earn a regular first-team place at the Merseyside club in the coming seasons. At 22, the future looks quite promising for Ekitike. Therefore, the Reds would be wise to go all out to get him on board in this summer transfer period.

Liverpool given HUGE boost in bid for £84m striker

Liverpool remain locked in talks with Bayer Leverkusen over the transfer of Florian Wirtz. The 22-year-old playmaker remains the club's priority in the summer window, with a 'final' bid now reported to have been made to the German side. Once the Wirtz deal is wrapped up, Liverpool will carry on with their other major summer business. There are still additions to be made at left-back and up front and Milos Kerkez will soon arrive to take care of one of those problems. Advertisement And while the Reds are close to wrapping up deals for both Wirtz and Kerkez, it will soon be time to sign an upgrade in the No9 position. It's widely believed that both Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota are at risk this summer - with neither player truly convincing Arne Slot during the Premier League title-winning campaign. Ekitike linked with Liverpool And so several star names have been linked - from Viktor Gyokeres to Victor Osimhen, and from Alexander Isak to Joao Pedro. Another name which appeared on the radar was that of Hugo Ekitike. Liverpool have had their eye on the Frenchman since his days as a young player at Reims. Now at Eintracht Frankfurt, the 22-year-old was one of the stars of the Bundesliga season and tipped to move on during the transfer window. Advertisement Chelsea had moved into the lead for Ekitike and at one stage it looked as though Liverpool had dropped out of the race altogether. But Ekitike's move to Stamford Bridge has hit a roadblock - according to the latest report in BILD - and that could open the door for the Reds. © IMAGO - Hugo Ekitike Liverpool Chelsea hesitating over Ekitike According to the report, Enzo Maresca's side are 'suddenly hesitating' over Ekitike, and time is running out for them to register the forward before the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. He will need to be registered before June 10 in order to take part but the transfer fee is being reported as an issue. Frankfurt want £84m for their 15-goal forward but according to the report Chelsea are only prepared to go to £67m. Advertisement With Ekitike under contract until 2029, Frankfurt are under no real pressure to sell. And while Chelsea entertain doubts over the move, it could open the door for Liverpool to strike. It's no secret the Merseysiders require improvements up top - and they can capitalise on Chelsea's change of mind in order to land a long-term target. Let's get Wirtz and Kerkez wrapped - then tie up the signing of a new striker.
