Police officer found slumped at wheel of car after drinking bottle of gin on shift

Yahoo01-04-2025

A police officer who was found slumped at the wheel of her car after drinking a whole bottle of gin while on shift has avoided prison.
Pc Lauren Payne, 27, was found in the driver's seat of a marked Ford Focus patrol car during a shift on January 17.
Reading Magistrates' Court was told Payne had 123mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath – almost four times over the legal limit.
On January 17, Payne was sent to work at Aldershot Police Station in Hampshire because of staff shortages. She stayed until around 3:30pm when she was released from her duties and informed her line manager that she was on her way back to Andover, Prosecutor Peter Ryman said.
The force control room was concerned by an unclear message from Payne and a police sergeant found her marked police vehicle at Popham Services near Basingstoke at 4:40pm, the prosecutor said.
Payne was found her sitting in the driving seat of the police car, slumped over the wheel. The sergeant found her intoxicated and could smell alcohol, the court heard. Payne then failed a breath test.
The defendant, who was in uniform, on Tuesday admitted driving over the legal limit for alcohol on the A303.
Mr Ryman said a near-empty bottle of gin was found in her bag and a bottle of Diet Coke was also found in the car. The court later heard Payne put the gin in Diet Coke bottle.
Charlotte Branfield, defending, told the court: 'This is a very sad case of a young woman who has long suffered from mental health issues.
'It was a dream, in her words, to become a police officer, formed during her struggles as a teenager.
'She wanted to help people who were vulnerable and she felt the police force was the most effective way of doing that.'
The court heard the defendant realised she had issues with alcohol in September last year and confided in a colleague and self-reported alcoholism to a staff sergeant.
She underwent an occupational health assessment. The force concluded the efforts she was making were in her favour and she was kept on the frontline of the force, Ms Branfield added.
However, Ms Branfield said the defendant was in a collision after a night shift on January 10 when she hit a deer. Subsequently, she began suffering from nightmares from the collision and could 'still smell the airbag burning from the accident' in March, the court heard.
The car was written off and both airbags were deployed, Ms Branfield said. Payne relapsed, started drinking alcohol again and became very scared of getting into cars, the court heard.
Ms Branfield said that on January 17, the defendant suffered an extreme stress reaction – overcome with anxiety through reliving the car accident on January 10.
Ms Branfield described the incident on January 17 as a 'fateful decision' to open the bottle of gin and drink it.
'She put the gin in the near empty diet coke bottle and drank,' defence counsel added.
Payne, who admitted drink driving while on duty, worked as a police staff investigator outside Southampton Central for four years until July 2024, when she became a police constable.
The now former officer, who wore a white, spotted shirt and smart, grey suit trousers in the dock, was immediately suspended from duty and has since resigned from the force.
She had no conduct issues previously, the court heard.
A written reference said Payne, of Grateley, Hants., revealed that she 'clearly cared about the public she served.'
District Judge Samuel Goozee accepted Payne was suffering from alcohol dependence and a deterioration in her mental health at the time of the offence, and accepted she had reached out to senior officers in the force.
'At the time of the offence you were endeavouring to access community-based support. You have made focused steps to address your alcohol dependency since you were arrested for this offence.'
Judge Goozee said Payne had taken 'very positive steps' and had demonstrated significant remorse for her actions.
'The references demonstrates, prior to your offending Ms Payne, you had great potential as a police officer,' Judge Goozee said.A probation service report described Payne's actions as a 'cry for help.'
Judge Goozee said: 'That cry for help turned out to be the end of your career as police officer.'
He noted the former officer's actions placed the public at serious risk of harm.
Payne was sentenced to 10 weeks in prison suspended for one year.
She was ordered to complete up to 15 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days, 150 hours of unpaid community work and an alcohol monitoring requirement for 120 days.
Her driving licence was revoked and she was disqualified from driving for 30 months from February 4.
She will be placed on the College of Policing's barred list for five years.

Man, 20, faces multiple charges in October crash that killed Hamilton teen

HAMILTON - Hamilton police say a 20-year-old man is facing multiple charges after a deadly October collision on the Lincoln Alexander Parkway that was believed to be connected to a dispute between high school students. Police say the crash occurred on Oct. 11, 2024, and witnesses reported that two or three vehicles were racing on the parkway before a Ford Focus collided with a Toyota RAV-4. Three of the Toyota occupants were taken to hospital and one of them, a 15-year-old boy, was pronounced dead a short time later. Police allege the Ford Focus fled the scene with all four vehicle occupants uninjured. The driver of that vehicle is now facing charges that include dangerous operation causing death and criminal negligence causing death. Hamilton police have previously said that the collision is believed to be connected to 'a series of escalating incidents' between students at St. Jean de Brebeuf and Nora Frances Henderson high schools in the city. Driver charged in fatal high-speed crash that arose from high school beef

Hamilton police have arrested a driver involved in a high-speed collision on the Lincoln Alexander Parkway last fall that killed a 15-year-old teenager and seriously injured two others. The speed race-turned-fatal crash — stemming from an escalating feud between neighbouring high schools — occurred on the eastbound lanes of the Linc around 2:30 p.m. Oct. 11, 2024. In a news release at the time, police said witnesses saw two or three vehicles racing near the Upper Gage Avenue overpass. Two cars — a Ford Focus and Toyota RAV4 — then collided and lost control. As the driver of the Ford regained control and fled the scene, the Toyota careened off the road and rolled multiple times. Jayden Russell was ejected from the vehicle and later died in hospital. Eight months after the crash, police announced Thursday the arrest of a 20-year-old local man who was allegedly driving the Ford. Ezatullah Haidari faces charges of dangerous operation causing death and bodily harm, as well as criminal negligence causing death and bodily harm. The death of Jayden — a St. Jean de Brébeuf student remembered as an athletic, funny and aspiring entrepreneur who got his first job at 13 — came amid an ongoing beef between students at his high school and nearby Nora Frances Henderson. A flag outside of St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic Secondary School flew at half-mast after one of its students, 15-year-old Jayden Russell, was killed in a high-speed crash in October 2024. In the week leading up to the crash, at least 100 people were involved in a parking lot fight between students from the east Mountain schools. The day before the collision, bear spray was used in a brawl outside Nora Francis Henderson, police said. Two people were treated by paramedics, with one taken to hospital. Police said the incident involved kids from both schools. While the fatal speed race on Oct. 11 ended on the Linc, police said at the time it began in the parking lot of Brébeuf, with a black Ford Focus and silver Infiniti chasing a Toyota SUV. Haidari was one of three people in the Ford, none of whom were injured in the crash that followed the chase, police said on Thursday. Police said Haidari attended a police station shortly after the collision. His arrest comes in the wake of a 'lengthy and a thorough investigation.' The 20-year-old is the second person to be arrested in connection with the fatal crash — although the first no longer faces charges . A day after the collision, police charged an 18-year-old who was driving the Toyota with dangerous operation causing bodily harm and death. In February, charges against the teen were dropped, with court hearing there was no reasonable prospect of conviction. The Crown said a lengthy probe by police's collision reconstruction unit indicated the driver wasn't the 'factual or legal cause' behind Jayden's death or the bodily harm suffered by another passenger. Following the withdrawal, the teen's lawyer, Dean Paquette, said in a statement that his client sped away from the other cars because he feared for his safety. The teen wasn't a student at Brébeuf or Nora Frances and was 'unaware' of the conflict brewing between the two. Paquette said his client had three passengers in the RAV4 when the Ford and Infiniti 'menacingly approached' his vehicle in the Brébeuf parking lot, causing him to flee 'for his own life and those of his passengers.' A few seconds before the collision, the Toyota reached a top speed of more than 140 km/h, according to Paquette. The lawyer said the Ford pulled up on the driver's side of the vehicle and veered 'sharply and suddenly' into it, sending it off the road and rolling four to six times. The driver and another passenger were seriously injured, while Jayden was killed. The Ford and Infiniti fled. Jayden's death was marked at his school by a moment of silence and a memorial at his locker. A GoFundMe launched in support of his family has raised around $20,000. 'Every parent's worst nightmare is losing a child,' the page reads. Police continue to investigate the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact the collision reconstruction unit at 905-546-4753 or reconunit@ . To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or . Error!
