Oakland Mayor-elect Barbara Lee announces key appointments to address public safety and economy

Oakland Mayor-elect Barbara Lee announced Friday a transition team of politicians, business leaders, philanthropists, attorneys and nonprofit heads that will help her lead the city when she takes office.
The group is made up of 16 people, including Fred Blackwell, CEO of the San Francisco Foundation, Keith Carson, a retired Alameda County supervisor, Quinn Delaney, founder of the Akonadi Foundation, and Carrie Owen Plietz, regional president for Kaiser Permanente Northern California.
The transition committee will be tasked with helping Lee implement her 10-point plan to address Oakland's challenges, and with creating working groups to address homelessness, public safety and labor issues, improve small business support and establish public-private partnerships, she has said.
'Oaklanders demand — and deserve — transparency, accountability, and results. With the help of these dynamic leaders and residents, this is what we will deliver together,' Lee said in a statement Friday. 'For all of Oakland, I want to thank those who have agreed to serve — and am filled with gratitude for your leadership and support, which will help Oakland turn the next chapter.'
Lee has said she intends to implement her 10-point plan within her first 100 days in office. It prioritizes developing public safety strategies, streamlining building permits and cleaning up trash, among other goals. Lee has also proposed engaging the CEOs of the top 10 biggest companies in the city on public-private partnerships.
Lee, who beat former city council member Loren Taylor in last month's election to be the city's next mayor, will likely be sworn in this month. Her swearing in will occur after the Alameda County Registrar of Voters certifies the vote and the Oakland City Council votes to accept the results.
Other members of her transition team announced Friday include Michael Barnett, an Oakland homeowner and scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab; Creighton Davis, former chair of the city's community policing advisory board and current board member of Black Cultural Zone, a nonprofit; Jeanette Dong, chief strategy officer of Alameda Health System; Viola Gonzales, former president of the League of Women Voters; Robert Harris, an executive member of the NAACP; Freada Kapor Klein, a venture capitalist; Paul Markovich, president and CEO of Ascendium; Maximus Simmons, student board director of the Oakland school district; and Sheryl Walton, co-chair of the Block by Block Organizing Network (BBBON), a coalition of community activists in Oakland.
Danny Wan, former executive director of the port of Oakland, Barbara Parker, former Oakland city attorney, and Ben Rosenfeld, the former San Francisco city controller, will advise the transition team, Lee also announced Friday.
Lee, a progressive stalwart, has promised to unify the city amid challenging times as Oakland grapples with a budget crisis that has resulted in layoffs, a hiring freeze and other cost-saving measures. Last week, she announced that Barbara Leslie, president of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce, and Keith Brown, head of the Alameda Labor Council, will lead her transition committee.
Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins, who was council president before voters recalled ex-Mayor Sheng Thao in November, is expected to release a budget proposal on Monday. The proposal, which he said in a statement would include the input of incoming elected officials, will map out the city's priorities over the next two years.
But rising costs and struggling revenue streams pose challenges for the city to make major headway on some of its priorities, which include addressing public safety concerns and illegal dumping.

Doctored image targets Lee Jae-myung's women supporters

"Even if the candidate is a criminal, dictator or thug, these people say they'll support Lee Jae-myung even if they're ripped apart," reads part of a Korean-language Facebook post shared on June 2, 2025. "Regardless of the martial law (declaration) or impeachment, we cannot hand over the country's fate to these kinds of people." The post includes an image of someone holding up a sign that reads, "Even if our genitals are ripped apart, we will support Lee Jae-myung." The language used on the purported sign appears to reference a controversy involving Lee, stemming from a leaked 2012 phone call in which he used explicit language while speaking with his sister-in-law (archived link). Lee says that while he regrets the comments, he had been quoting profanities used by his brother (archived link). The image was shared a day before South Korea's snap presidential election on June 3, which Lee won with 49.4 percent of the popular vote. According to the election results, he secured over 60 percent of the vote among women in their 20s and 30s (archived link). The same image was also repeatedly shared elsewhere in similar Facebook posts from conservative users as well as in forums, with commenters mocking Lee's women supporters. "They've really gone insane, haven't they? They'd really sacrifice their genitals for Lee?" read a comment on one of the posts. Another said: "This goes to show just how extreme his supporters are, they should be put in an asylum." The image, however, was doctored. A reverse image search on Google led to the original photo, showing a sign without any explicit language, published in an online report by labour-related news outlet Workers' Solidarity from April 12, 2022 (archived link). The sign reads, "Desperately Jae-myung". The outlet's photo editor Lee Mi-jin told AFP the image was taken from a Facebook post shared by former ruling Democratic Party lawmaker Kwon In-sook a day ahead of the previous presidential election on March 8, 2022 (archived link). Lee ran in the 2022 election as the Democratic Party's candidate, losing by a razor-thin margin to Yoon Suk Yeol (archived link). Kwon's post, which included various photos of a rally attended by Lee, called on his supporters to unite ahead of the vote. A keyword search on YouTube found Kwon's photos matched footage of a rally held at Yeouido in central Seoul on the same day (archived link). Similar signs matching those in Kwon's photos can be seen at the YouTube video's 13:38, 22:06 and 22:48 marks; no signs containing the explicit language seen in the misleading social media posts can be spotted. AFP previously debunked multiple false claims surrounding Lee's presidential campaign.

Panduit Launces Innovative Solar Drain Clip to Boost Solar Panel Efficiency Across Asia Pacific

Revolutionary drainage solution addresses critical maintenance challenges in the region's diverse climate conditions SINGAPORE, June 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Panduit, a global leader in electrical and network infrastructure solutions, today announced the launch of its Solar Drain Clip in the Asia Pacific market. This innovative product addresses one of the most significant challenges facing solar installations across the region's diverse climates: water accumulation and its negative impact on solar panel efficiency and longevity. Experience the full interactive Multichannel News Release here: The Asia Pacific region has seen unprecedented growth in solar energy adoption, with installations expected to increase by 40% over the next five years. However, the region's varied climate conditions—from monsoon seasons to high humidity environments—present unique challenges for maintaining optimal solar panel performance. "Water accumulation on solar panels is particularly problematic across APAC where intense rainfall and humidity can accelerate dirt buildup and algae growth," said Gavin Lee, Business Development Director for Asia Pacific. "Our Solar Drain Clip provides a simple yet effective solution that can significantly reduce maintenance costs while maximizing energy output—addressing a critical need for solar installations throughout the region." Optimized Drainage for Maximum Efficiency The Solar Drain Clip improves drainage by effectively directing water off panel surfaces, minimizing residue buildup that can cause shading and reduced power output. By maintaining cleaner panel surfaces, the clip helps sustain consistent energy generation in all weather conditions, a particular advantage during monsoon seasons experienced across many parts of APAC. Engineered for Asia Pacific's Demanding Environments With an estimated service life exceeding 20 years*, the Solar Drain Clip is specifically designed to withstand the region's harshest environmental conditions, from extreme heat and humidity to heavy seasonal rainfall. This durability stands in harsh contrast to lower-grade alternatives that typically require replacement within 1-2 years. "For large-scale solar installations across Asia Pacific, the reduction in maintenance frequency translates to significant operational cost savings," added Lee. "This makes our Solar Drain Clip particularly valuable for utility-scale solar farms and commercial installations throughout the region." Key Features and Benefits: Tool-Free Installation: Simple clip-on mechanism enables quick installation or removal, reducing labor costs Universal Compatibility: Unique range-taking design accommodates most solar panel frame thicknesses, simplifying inventory management Retrofit Capability: Equally effective for both new installations and existing solar arrays needing performance improvements Regional Testing: Extensively tested in various APAC climate conditions to ensure optimal performance Availability The Panduit Solar Drain Clip is now available through authorized Panduit distributors across the APAC region.
