Second measles case confirmed in unvaccinated adult in Williamson County
WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — A second case of measles was confirmed in Williamson County on Tuesday.
The case involved an unvaccinated adult resident from Leander, the Williamson County and Cities Health District (WCCHD) said in a press release.
According to officials, the individual is no longer in their infectious period and was not present in the Williamson County area while they were contagious.
WCCHD, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), along with local health authorities said it will directly notify individuals who may have been exposed, the release added.
All three agencies are actively working together to assess any potential contacts as part of the ongoing public health investigation.
'Vaccination is one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent the spread of measles and protect our community, ' said Dr. Amanda Norwood, WCCHD Medical Director. Norwood added 'two doses of the MMR vaccine offer safe, strong, long-lasting protection.'
On May 22, KXAN reported Williamson County's first measles case was a school-age child from Leander. Liberty Hill Independent School District had sent a letter to parents informing them that the case involved a 'school-aged child who attended Bar W Elementary School,' KXAN reported.
Other counties in Texas have reported cases, including Hays County. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, two cases have been reported in Travis County.
More than 720 cases have been confirmed, with cases primarily in the outbreak area in West Texas since late January, DSHS said.
If you think you've been exposed, or if you begin to show symptoms, WCCHD advised to contact your healthcare provider before going to a clinic or hospital, to help reduce the risk of exposing others.

Measles case reported in Putnam County, N.Y. Here's the warning from health officials.
A measles case has been confirmed in Putnam County, New York, and health officials have a warning for anyone who visited a local tavern while the person was there last month. The Putnam County Department of Health announced the case Wednesday, saying the infected person contracted the measles while traveling abroad. The department said the person is no longer contagious, but officials are working to locate anyone who may have come in contact with the person while they were. The department believes the person only went to one local establishment during that period. Officials say anyone who visited Arturo's Tavern at 878 Route 6 in Mahopac, between 6 and 10 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, should call 845-808-1390 to speak with a nurse. "The owner and staff at Arturo's Tavern have assisted in every way possible to help identify any additional exposures. They share our priority—to ensure the health and safety of our Putnam residents and guests," Putnam County Health Director Rian Rodriguez said in a statement. Measles symptoms & vaccine An infected person can be contagious four days before and four days after the rash appears, the department said. The virus can live for two hours in an airspace after the person leaves the area. "Measles symptoms may begin with fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, and sore throat," said Kathy Percacciolo, the county's Supervising Public Health Nurse. "It is followed by a rash that spreads from the head downward over the body. If anyone with a potential exposure has these symptoms, call your doctor or the emergency room before you enter the building so that precautions can be taken to prevent spread in the heath care facility." The department says its communicable disease nurses can help determine a person's exposure risk and what action, if any, is needed. Officials add the best protection from the measles is to be vaccinated with the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine. Earlier this spring, New Jersey health officials warned of cases at an NJ Turnpike service area, Newark Liberty International Airport and at the Shakira concert at MetLife Stadium. Cases have also been confirmed this year in New York City and on Long Island.

Marquette County reporting two confirmed cases of measles in the past week
With the addition of two newly confirmed cases in Marquette County, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is counting 10 measles cases in the state so far this year. The official list now is: Ingham – 1 case Kent – 1 case. Macomb – 1 case. Marquette – 2 cases. Montcalm – 4 cases. This number is considered an outbreak Oakland – 1 case. The Marquette County cases, which are the newest ones, were reported May 29 and June 2 by the local health department. A previously reported measles case in Ingham County has been pulled from the 2025 count because additional testing indicated a false alarm, according to state officials. That individual recently had received one dose of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, which triggered the first laboratory test; and medical personnel later determined the respiratory symptoms were not from measles. Measles is considered a highly contagious disease; but two doses of the MMR vacine are 97% effective in preventing measles. Over 1,000 cases have been confirmed in the United States so far this year, resulting in 133 hospitalizations and three deaths, according to the latest reports from the Centers for Disease Control. Symptoms of measures can include high fever, cough, runny nose, white spots inside the mouth, and a red rash on the skin. The above video originally aired on April 16.

Suspect in deadly 2023 hit-and-run crash charged with manslaughter, affidavit says
AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man who was accused of killing an Austin father and daughter in a 2023 hit-and-run in east Austin has been charged with manslaughter, a second-degree felony, according to a Travis County arrest warrant affidavit. On June 23, 2023, the driver of a 2010 red Chevrolet was involved in a two-vehicle crash in the 5500 block of Delta Post Drive. Deputies identified the suspect as Luis Rodolfo Mata Limon, said the affidavit. KXAN will reach out to Luis' attorney once it is provided. We will update this if a statement is received. According to the affidavit, Limon 'failed to give half of the roadway and struck a black ATV.' The ATV was operated by Jonathan Gomez-Guajardo, who was with his daughter Azeneth Gomez-Rodriguez. Sadly, both were killed as a result of the crash. A video from a parked Tesla nearby captured the crash and was obtained by Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers, according to the affidavit. The video showed the pickup truck traveling southwest on Delta Post Drive and the ATV traveling northeast also on Delta Post Drive. Both vehicles eventually collided head-on. The pickup truck dragged the ATV across the roadway, onto the sidewalk area and into the grass, the affidavit detailed. The truck continued traveling southwest and eventually made a complete stop. That was when Limon left the scene on foot. Additionally, Travis County deputies had spoken with witnesses in the area and one resident even captured a Hispanic man running away from the scene of the crash. Through investigation, an iPhone and cans of alcohol were left inside the truck. The affidavit stated that only the driver's side airbag was deployed and was later used as DNA evidence. The phone left inside the vehicle also provided evidence for law enforcement. Following the crash investigation, troopers showed up at the residence where the vehicle was registered–which was under his father's name, Salvador Mata Garcia. When DPS arrived at the residence, they were unsuccessful in locating Luis and Salvador. However, on June 24, DPS was able to get in contact with Salvador, the affidavit stated. The affidavit said Salvador 'made a stolen [car] report with Travis County, but could not confirm his whereabouts during the crash time.' Salvador also told troopers that Luis was not answering his calls, nor did he show up to work since the time of the crash. The days following the crash, troopers had no luck in contacting Luis. When they asked Salvador why he hadn't reported his son missing, he told officers that 'his son is a little 'dumb'' and that 'he was not worried for him,' the affidavit stated. On July 17, 2023, a search warrant was issued for the vehicle and a DNA search warrant was issued for both men. The airbag was taken from the vehicle and was submitted to DPS Austin Crime Lab for evidence and DNA collection, the affidavit stated. According to the affidavit, the DNA search warrant was issued to 'possibly identify the driver from the DNA' in the airbag. However, DNA was only collected from Salvador. Further details revealed the night before [the crash], [Luis] was at a party and did not return home and that the truck was lent to Luis, the affidavit stated. Officials believe Luis was 'possibly drinking and driving' when the crash happened and ran away from the scene to avoid an arrest because he didn't have a valid driver's license at the time, the affidavit detailed. It was confirmed in the affidavit that Luis had open alcohol containers inside the truck. Additionally, deputies said Luis did not attempt to call 911, nor did he attempt to return to the scene of the crash to render aid to the victims. KXAN previously covered in September 2023, the family of Gomez-Guajardo and Azeneth had sued two men whom they believed were responsible for the east Austin fatal crash.
