Azmi Rohani appointed Comptroller of the Royal Household, effective July 1
PUTRAJAYA, June 23 — Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani has been appointed as the new Comptroller of the Royal Household, Istana Negara, effective July 1, said Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
Shamsul Azri, in a statement today, said His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has consented to the appointment of Azmi, 59, who has been the Johor State Secretary since January 1, 2017.
'Given his vast experience and credibility, I believe he will further strengthen the administration of Istana Negara and discharge his duties effectively as the Comptroller of the Royal Household in supporting and upholding the authority of His Majesty as the Head of State,' he said.
Azmi holds a Bachelor's degree in Development Science (Economics and Management) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, as well as a Master's degree in Human Resource Development and a PhD in Land Administration and Development from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
He has 33 years of experience in the civil service, having started his career as an assistant district officer at the Muar District Office in 1992. — Bernama

Selangor Mufti defends fatwa against liberalism, says SIS court win doesn't affect individual Muslims
SHAH ALAM, June 23 — The concepts of liberalism and religious pluralism contravene the true teachings of Islam and may lead to deviations in faith and confusion within the Muslim community, according to Selangor Mufti Datuk Dr Anhar Opir. He said that although the recent Federal Court ruling stated that the fatwa dated July 31, 2014, does not apply to Sisters in Islam (SIS) Forum Malaysia as an organisation, the fatwa remains valid and binding for individual Muslims. The mufti explained that the decision does not undermine the fatwa's legitimacy with regard to individuals or the prohibition on any Muslim embracing pluralism, liberalism, or any other beliefs contrary to Islamic teachings. The fatwa was issued in accordance with Syariah law requirements and the Maqasid Syariah principles, including the preservation of religion, intellect, and lineage. 'Our department stands firmly with the Selangor Islamic Religious Council and respectfully supports the Sultan of Selangor's expression of disappointment regarding the Federal Court's recent decision, which stated that the fatwa does not apply to SIS Forum Malaysia due to the fact that it is an organisation, association, company or institution, but instead only applies to individuals. 'However, our department respects the rule of law and judicial decisions made by the Federal Court as the highest judicial institution in the country's legal system,' he said in a statement. In this regard, Anhar advised Muslims not to be influenced by misguided ideas promoting liberalism and religious pluralism under the guise of freedom or human rights propagated through social media, writings, and open forums. He stressed that true Islamic law should be the benchmark, not merely human logic, as the latter could jeopardise one's faith. The Mufti Department also reiterated its commitment to supporting authorities, non-governmental organisations, and individuals in monitoring and correcting any deviant teachings, beliefs, or ideologies that contradict the true Islamic teachings. Prior to this, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, urged SIS Forum Malaysia to stop using the term 'Islam' in any of its publications, as misuse of the term could confuse the Muslim community. On June 19, the Federal Court allowed the appeal by SIS Forum Malaysia and its co-founder Zainah Mahfoozah Anwar, in their legal challenge against a fatwa issued in 2014 by the Selangor Fatwa Committee declaring the organisation to have deviated from Islamic teachings. A four-judge panel led by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat in a 3-1 majority decision set aside the fatwa, insofar as it applied to companies and institutions. — Bernama

Govt approval rating up by 10%, says research house

(File pic) PETALING JAYA : The approval rating for the government has risen to 50%, while a majority of Malaysian voters has given Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim a positive approval rating of 55%, according to research house Merdeka Center. The latest approval rating for the government marks a 10% improvement from the 40% scored in June last year. In December of last year, Anwar's approval rating stood at 54%, while in June 2024 it was 43%. Merdeka Center's latest report, released to mark the midpoint of the Madani administration's five-year term, said Malaysians are beginning to feel the country is on a more stable footing following a period of political instability. 'Malaysians are beginning to feel the country is finally on firmer ground, with political turbulence easing and Anwar now leading a government with a two-thirds parliamentary majority. 'Institutional reforms like the revived Parliamentary Services Act 2025 also signal a return to principled governance,' the report, based on a survey carried out in May, said. It also said economic factors played a key role. Inflation eased to a three-year low of 1.4% in March, while gross domestic product grew by 4.4% in the first quarter. The report said the government's move to raise the minimum wage to RM1,700, provide festive cash aid to civil servants, and maintain fuel subsidies appear to have eased public anxiety over the rising cost of living. However, the survey noted that Malaysians remain most concerned about everyday economic issues. 'Bread-and-butter issues – not foreign policy or speeches – still move the Malaysian public the most,' Merdeka Center said. While Anwar's international engagements, including hosting Chinese president Xi Jinping and chairing Asean, have raised Malaysia's diplomatic profile, they have had less impact on voter sentiment than domestic issues. Dissatisfaction towards the federal government stands at 48% compared to 58% a year ago, although concerns linger over possible subsidy cuts in the near future. On the country's direction, 43% of those surveyed said Malaysia is heading the right way, an improvement from 29% in June 2024. Meanwhile, 50% still believe it is going in the wrong direction, down from 61% a year earlier. The poll was conducted from May 12 to 23 with 1,208 registered voters. The respondents were selected through random stratified sampling across age, ethnicity, gender and state constituencies.

Najib could still apply for parole, says lawyer
Former prime minister Najib Razak has obtained a PhD while in prison, says his lawyer, Shafee Abdullah. KUALA LUMPUR : Najib Razak still has a shot at being freed even if he fails to obtain a judicial review on a royal addendum that purportedly allows him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest. The former prime minister's lawyer, Shafee Abdullah, said Najib could still apply for parole in September or October. 'And the chances of him obtaining a parole is high considering that his jail term has been reduced to six years and he will receive an automatic remission after two years,' Shafee said. 'Najib has already served three years, so it's just another year left (before he is eligible for an automatic remission). He can be paroled,' he said. Najib is currently serving a six-year jail sentence on charges of abuse of power and corruption in the SRC International case. A Federal Court hearing has been set for July 1-2 on an appeal against a Court of Appeal decision allowing Najib to initiate a judicial review related to the addendum. The Court of Appeal had ordered the High Court to hear Najib's claim of the existence of a royal addendum. Separately, Shafee said that Najib has been a model prisoner. He also said Najib had obtained a doctorate while in prison and therefore saw no reason why he should be denied parole. 'His PhD is about developing the country. Many came to engage him. In many ways he is a model prisoner,' Shafee said.
