Wales hockey squads named for challenging summer
Wales men will have co-captains for the 2025-26 international hockey season, while Beth Bingham will continue to lead the women's side.Great Britain international Rupert Shipperley and Ben Francis will skipper the men's team as they build towards July's EuroHockey Championships II in Portugal.As well as Shipperley, 2024 Olympians Jacob Draper and Gareth Furlong are also in the 24-player men's squad who start the season with June's FIH Hockey Nations Cup in Malaysia.Among the 24 women selected, Holly Done, Lottie Atkinson, Jamie Bulbring, and Beth Peers earn first senior call-ups.They also face a competitive summer schedule featuring the FIH Nations Cup and European Championships, kicking off with a series of Easter weekend friendlies against Scotland.
"This year's senior squad selection contains an exciting mix of experience and potential who will look to build on their positive style of play in 2024 which saw them reach the final of the European qualifiers," said women's head coach Kevin Johnson ."There is much to look forward to as the group will meet together for the first time in this campaign over the upcoming Easter weekend in Scotland to get underway with some training matches before the focus shifts to the FIH Nations Cup II and European Championships over the summer."A third of this squad are also eligible for the Junior Women's World Cup which will be held in Chile in December 2025."Men's head coach Danny Newcombe already has his eyes set on qualifying for the 2027 EuroHockey Championships in London."It was a near impossible task to narrow down our squad to 24 names," said Newcombe. "This demonstrates the depth we are building in the player group. "We have a significant number of players with the level of skill and ambition required to compete at an international level for Wales. With our three Olympians returning to the group, 2025-26 is going to be a really exciting season."

But only a few dare take on the task of managing the national team, given its storied history and reputation in the game with four World Cups and two European Championships. That challenge now falls on former Gers star Gennaro Gattuso, who has been appointed as the new manager of Italy. Gattuso, 47, takes over from Luciano Spalletti who just a few days ago announced his OWN sacking. Spalletti's time was up after a 3-0 defeat to Norway but he still took charge of the national side's next game against Moldova. Those results leave the Azzurri sitting third of the five teams in their World Cup qualifying group. Gattuso, who recently left Hajduk Split after narrowly missing out on the Croatian title, is understood to have accepted the role as first reported by Fabrizio Romano. He was given a heartfelt send off from Split after winning 20 of 43 games, drawing 14 and losing nine. Hajduk finished just two points behind eventual champions Rijeka. Gattuso started his managerial career at Swiss club Sion but was sacked after 12 games. He later coached Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa before landing the manager's role at AC Milan, where he had spent most of his playing career. He was appointed boss at Napoli later that year and won the Coppa Italia in his first season there. After being let go by Napoli in 2021, Gattuso returned to management with Valencia the following year but quit after six months and then had a similarly short spell with Marseille in which he was sacked after five months. Gattuso signed for Rangers in 1997, as part of an influx of Italians including Lorenzo Amoruso, Marco Negri and Sergio Porrini (Swede Jonas Thern also joined that season from Roma). He was just 19 when signed by then-boss Walter Smith but he fell out of favour under Dick Advocaat at Ibrox and was moved from his usual midfield position to right-back before being sold to Salernitana for £4m. Robert MacIntyre has '100 per cent' belief he can win the US Open after an impressive third round at Oakmont. MacIntyre described his opening round level-par 70 as one of the best of his life, but he bettered it just 48 hours later. The Scot, from Oman, put in a controlled performance to card a 69, to sit on three over, six shots behind leaders Sam Burns and JJ Spaun when they were midway through their third round. It might have been even better for MacIntyre as he had got down to one over after 12 holes but a spate of bogeys in the final six holes saw him drift back out. But he still believes he is in contention win a first major. Asked if he can win, he replied: 'One hundred per cent. I wouldn't be here if I didn't believe that, it's a simple answer, yes. 'I'm just delighted to be in it, going into tomorrow if I can shoot the number I know I can shoot then why can't it be me? 'I have been playing really well this year, another round to go, I have put three solid rounds together so far. 'Tomorrow I have got to go out there, give it my best, don't try and focus too much on trying to win, just go out there, hit the shots, then come 15, 16, see where are sitting and decide whether to roll the dice or not.' Heavy rain overnight and throughout the morning had made the brutal Oakmont course slightly more playable but it still presented its challenges. 'It was still difficult,' MacIntyre added. 'It is a little bit softer so when you're on the fairway it gives you more of an opportunity, but I think the rough is even thicker with the water. 'I felt there was a low number with the way I was playing, I was playing beautifully out there. 'The key to this golf course is just be on the fairway. It is the priority and then you can go from there.' Tyrrell Hatton was also presenting British interest as a spate of birdies propelled him up the leaderboard. The 33-year-old Englishman, who started on three over, went one under at the 10th, 11th and 12th to move up level par midway through the third round. It is as you were for world number one Scottie Scheffler, who carded an even-par 70. Scheffler maintained he was still in contention after Friday's second round but failed to make any ground on the leaders, his three birdies cancelled out by three bogeys.
