DNCR unveils new $321K park in Johnstown
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) announced the opening of a new community park in Johnstown.
The DCNR invested $160,800 in the development of Minersville Community Park, which features a walking path, a half-court basketball court, a pavilion, a parking area and a playground. The project, which was recently completed, was part of the DCNR's Community Conservation Partnerships Program.
'This park is a tremendous step in improving access to nature in one of Pennsylvania's key urban communities,' DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn said. 'Thank you to everyone on the ground who worked to make this park possible for Johnstown. Present and future generations will be able to enjoy nature here for years to come thanks to this important work.'
The park project, which totaled $321,600, was made possible through a $150,800 investment from the City of Johnstown, a $10,000 donation from Robert Ramos and support from the Johnstown Community Redevelopment Authority, Minersville Polish Alliance and community members.

Wreaths Across America exhibit comes to Clearfield
CLEARFIELD COUNTY (WTAJ) – The Wreaths Across America education exhibit made its way to Clearfield on Friday, June 6. The exhibit goes through the history of the organization, explaining the importance of honoring veterans and why it's important to lay wreaths. Historic Crown Crest Cemetery worked to get the exhibit in Clearfield after they participated in Wreaths Across America for the first time last year. They say that they had the exhibit scheduled to come to the area for over a year. 'We were able to get it here today so that people could come for free. Go inside the exhibit and view the story of Wreaths Across America, the importance of it, the importance of honoring our veterans, those who served their country to give us our freedom today,' Linda Lawhead Pollock of the Historic Crown Cemetery Wreaths Across America said. The Historic Crown Crest Cemetery is also looking for people to donate so they can provide more wreaths to veterans this year. To donate, you can visit the Wreaths Across America website. REMEMBERING ONE OF THEIR OWN: Volunteer, wildland firefighters turn out in force to remember Chief David Warfel
HALIFAX, Pa. (WHTM) — Firefighters from across the area came together Friday to pay last respects to a chief who lived life fighting fires and serving his community. David Warfel died last week at a wildland fire training academy in Cumberland County. A longtime firefighter in the Halifax and Powells Valley area, he was most recently chief at the Carsonville Fire Company in upper Dauphin County. His company remembered him as 'always a cheerful, musical, funny guy.' He was also Forest District Maintenance Supervisor at the Weiser State Forest, working for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources in the Bureau of Forestry. The Bureau of Forestry, which houses DCNR's wildland firefighting outfit, came out in force to remember one of their own as dozens of their white and green wildland fire trucks joined in a procession at Halifax High School. At Riverview Memorial Gardens, aerial apparatus from Lykens and Millersburg draped a flag over a ladder archway under which the procession passed. 'Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dave was a cherished colleague and friend,' DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn said shortly after his passing. 'His camaraderie, integrity, and kindness enriched the lives of all who had the privilege to work alongside him. The entire DCNR family mourns this tremendous loss and extends heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.' Hollidaysburg Mayor receives honor of ‘Mayor of the Year'
HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — Hollidaysburg Mayor Joseph R. Dodson received the esteemed honor of 'Mayor of the Year' at the Pennsylvania Association of Boroughs (PSAB) on Tuesday, June 3. Mayor Dodson, currently serving his fourth term, was awarded the Albert Montecalvo Mayor of the Year award given by the Association of Mayors of the Boroughs of Pennsylvania. The honor recognized Mayor Dodson for his years of public service and accomplishments. Presenting the award were PSAB President Thomas Weikel and PSAB 1st Vice President Randy Riddle, who both serve as Mayors of Royersford and Grove City, Pa, respectively. 'His impact is profound and lasting. Mayor Dodson exemplifies servant leadership, and his legacy will inspire generations to come,' Mayor Riddle said. Mayor Dodson, expressing his gratitude, said, 'It is a great honor to receive this award. I had no idea. There are a lot of great boroughs in Pennsylvania, so to be the one to receive this award is very humbling. I've worked really hard to make Hollidaysburg a better place during my time as Mayor. I don't do it for the recognition, but it's nice for people notice what you're doing.' In addition to his tenure as mayor, Dodson previously served two terms on the Hollidaysburg Borough Council and remains an active member of American Legion Post 516. To further celebrate this great achievement, Mayor Dodson was also recognized by State Senator Judy Ward and State Representative Scott Barger back in Hollidaysburg on June 6. The Albert Montecalvo Mayor of the Year Award is named after Mayor Albert Montecalvo, who served 56 years as mayor, believed to be one of the longest-serving mayors in the state, according to the Association of Mayors of the Boroughs of Pennsylvania website.
