Supersonic prototype jet breaks sound barrier on US test flight

A US-made prototype jet has broken the sound barrier, in the first commercial venture to achieve supersonic speeds since Concorde.
Boom Supersonic, a startup that seeks to build the world's fastest airliner, flew a test flight of its fighter jet-sized XB-1 demonstrator over the Mojave desert in California on Tuesday.
At an altitude of about 10,700 metres (35,000ft), the jet accelerated to Mach 1.1, or about 845 mph (1,360 km/h), faster than the speed at which sound travels.
'She was real happy supersonic,' Boom's chief test pilot, Tristan 'Geppetto' Brandenburg, said after landing. 'That's the best she's ever flown.'
The XB-1 has now completed 12 successful test flights and is a precursor to – and a third of the size of – Boom's proposed commercial airliner. That aircraft, named, Overture, promises to transport 64-80 passengers across the Atlantic in about 3.5 hours, compared to 6.5 hours by current means.
While its aircraft are still in the test phase, the company has 130 preorders from American Airlines, United Airlines and Japan Airlines. The firm has a factory in North Carolina, where it plans to build 66 Overture aircraft a year.
Chuck Yeager became the first human to break the sound barrier in 1947, when he flew the Bell X-1 at Mach 1, also over the Mojave desert.
Boom's jets will aim for speeds of up to Mach 1.7 – twice that of today's fastest commercial aircraft but less than Concorde's top speed of Mach 2.04.
The company says flights will use 'up to 100% sustainable' aviation fuel, which still produces greenhouse gases, but less than traditional jet fuels.
Concorde, an Anglo-French supersonic airliner flown by Air France and British Airways, was retired in 2003 after 27 years of service.

Three years earlier, the jet suffered its only fatal incident when an Air France flight crashed on takeoff at Paris killing all 109 on board and four on the ground.
However, it was maintenance issues, soaring operational costs and the impact of the 9/11 New York attacks on the aviation industry as a whole that were blamed for the end of Concorde.
Blake Scholl, the founder and chief executive of Boom, told the Guardian in 2022 that his company would succeed where Concorde failed because his jets would be lighter and more efficient.
'Concorde was a technological marvel for the 1960s,' he said. 'But they weren't focused on the economics, and it became too expensive to fly.'

Secure Messaging, a new whistleblowing innovation, makes it easier and safer for anyone to share stories and tips with our journalists via ​the Guardian app. Built by the Guardian's product and engineering team in partnership with the University of Cambridge's Department of Computer Science ​and Technology​, Secure Messaging is an exciting new approach to confidential communication between the public and the press. Secure Messaging is unlike traditional information sharing platforms​. The tech behind the tool conceals the fact that messaging is taking place at all. It makes the communication indistinguishable from data sent to and from the app by our millions of regular users. So, by using the Guardian app, readers are effectively providing 'cover' and helping us to protect sources. Secure Messaging is not just a significant source protection tool for the Guardian. As part of our commitment to protecting the press and the public interest globally, the Guardian has published the source code for the technology that enables this system. This means that other organisations can use this technology freely to implement secure messaging tools within their own apps. The development of Secure Messaging comes at a time when journalists and their confidential sources are under pressure in the US and globally. The paper, which included interviews with staff at the Guardian, explored the issue with keeping sources truly confidential within current whistleblowing tech. Once published, the Guardian started work to make the Secure Messaging service a reality, with its product and engineering investigations and reporting team building the app, alongside a member of the original research team from the University of Cambridge. The technology has been audited by 7A Security (with funding from the Open Technology Fund). Security issues over plans for a Chinese embassy near London's financial centres will be 'taken care of assiduously', a minister said after the White House warned Downing Street against allowing the project to go ahead. Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said the UK would offer a 'fulsome response' to any concerns raised by allies amid suggestions that US opposition could undermine transatlantic trade negotiations. Mr Kyle sought to reassure the public that the Government deals with similar 'infrastructure issues' relating to embassies 'all the time'. 'These issues will be taken care of assiduously in the planning process,' he told Sky News's Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips programme. He added: 'These are the issues that we talk about as two countries all the time… we're in the Five Eyes agreement, America and Britain share intelligence… If people raise security issues even though it relates to planning, then I'm sure we will have a fulsome response for them. 'But look, the key thing is these are issues which are quite routinised in the way that we deal with the security of our country.' A senior US official had told the Sunday Times: 'The United States is deeply concerned about providing China with potential access to the sensitive communications of one of our closest allies.' The matter is believed to have been discussed during US-UK trade talks, with diplomats saying the Trump administration would have reservations about intelligence sharing with the UK if the building went ahead. More than a thousand demonstrators gathered earlier this year for a rally against the proposed Chinese 'super-embassy' because of concerns about its proximity to Canary Wharf and the City of London. The redevelopment plans at the former site of the Royal Mint were 'called in' last year, which means the Government will make the final decision following a report from the Planning Inspectorate. The plan was initially refused by Tower Hamlets Council in 2022. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said the embassy was likely to become a base for spying activity and insisted permission should not be given for its development. 'I agree with the United States. We think it is a security risk. 'In government the Conservatives were very clear, we should not be allowing the Chinese to build this super-embassy,' he told Sky News's Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips show. 'We've seen the Chinese government cracking down on dissidents, running secret police stations in the UK, even putting bounties on the heads of dissidents, some of whom I've met. We should not be giving permission to this.'
