Record sea heatwave grips Wales but not all visitors will be welcome

Exotic sea creatures could start being washed up on Welsh beaches as water temperatures soar, scientists believe. The UK and Ireland in the grip of a marine heat wave with some waters now 4C warmer than usual for the time of year.
Already a surge in sea and land temperatures has seen more people flocking to beaches, with warmer waters reducing the cooling effect of sea breezes. However, Britain's waters remain distinctly chilly for most swimmers and toe-dippers.
The heatwave is most intense in the Celtic Sea and off the west coast of Ireland, where current sea surface temperatures are up to 4C warmer, according to the Met Office. Around the UK coastline, the sea is 1.5C-2.5C warmer, with hotspots in Cardigan Bay and along the North Wales coast.
These temperatures are 'what we would usually expect around mid-June,' said the national forecaster. Classing the event as 'extreme', the Met Office said surface temperatures (SSTs) reached levels for April and May that were the highest since satellite monitoring began in 1982.
Not only is the heatwave significant due to its intensity, observers have been surprised by its longevity. So far it's lasted more than two months: usually, marine heatwaves in UK waters dissipate after two to four weeks. Sea temperatures are finally expected to start dropping in the coming days as cooler weather settles over Britain.
Dr Ségolène Berthou, scientific manager for regional coupled modelling at the Met Office, said: 'The heatwave is the result of several overlapping factors. Prolonged high-pressure systems brought a dry, sunny spring and weak winds and waves, creating ideal conditions for warming.
'This means the sea started to warm mid-February, one month earlier than usual. Additionally, the waters around the UK were already warmer than usual coming out of winter, a trend that has been building over the past 40 years, with an average increase of 0.3C per decade.' Climate change is causing oceans to warm around the globe and is making marine heatwaves more likely. On May 19 the average UK sea surface temperature reached 12.69C – well above the country's marine heatwave threshold for May (11.3C).
Scientists suspect warmer waters could increase the annual influx of jellyfish to UK shores. Already a number of sightings have been made of the huge barrel jellyfish washed up on beaches in Gwynedd and Ceredigion.
A marine expert has warned it could see other exotic and unusual sea creatures arriving on Welsh shores in greater numbers. Frankie Hobro, director of Anglesey Sea Zoo, Brynsiencyn, believes some may pose a greater risk to beachgoers, underlining the need for greater awareness of marine medicine.
Some might be first-time visitors, other more mature versions of juveniles currently spotted in UK waters. While many will be welcome, such as bluefin tuna, sunfish and basking sharks, others will not, she said. Candidates include pufferfish and Box jellyfish, one of the most poisonous animals on Earth.
Others already on British beaches could become more of a pest, such as the weever fish. This little critter buries itself in the and can deliver an excruciating sting. Another occasional visitor which also packs a powerful sting is the Portuguese man o' war, which could arrive in larger numbers and sizes, said Frankie.

Algal blooms are also expected to become more commonplace due to calmer and warmer seas., with patches of green algae developing that can threaten other marine life. On the plus side, bioluminescence displays next to beaches may become more numerous and spectacular.
However, heat stress could drive other marine life away from Britain's shores. 'There is no escape from the heat for sea creatures within it,' Frankie told North Wales Live. 'They can't turn on air conditioners under water, or escape it.'
While the warmer waters might be discernible to some swimmers, they are still distinctly nippy for the casual bather. Dr Berthou said temperatures in the North Sea have already peaked, whereas west Ireland and the Celtic Sea are currently experiencing their highest levels.
During marine heatwave events, a layer of warm water forms at the surface. She added: 'This layer acts like a lid, trapping heat near the surface and preventing it from mixing into deeper, cooler waters.
'It can be compared to a layer of olive oil floating on water; this thin surface layer allows heat from solar radiation to accumulate near the surface. When this layer forms, surface temperatures can increase fast: the last nine days have seen a sudden additional 1C warming.'
Dr Jonathan Tinker, a Met Office marine climate scientist, said the prolonged warming can amplify land heatwaves by reducing the cooling effect of sea breezes and by altering rainfall patterns. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox
He added: 'With projections suggesting UK summer sea temperatures could rise by up to 2.5C by 2050, such events are likely to become more frequent, intense and longer-lasting. Marine heatwaves offer a glimpse into how changing ocean conditions could shape future weather conditions.'

The weather warning states that 10-15mm of rain could fall in less than an hour, while some places could see 30-40mm of rain over several hours from successive showers and thunderstorms. Up to 40mm of rain could fall in a few hours in some places – more than in the entire month of May. Met Office data shows England recorded 32.8mm of rain last month – almost half the usual monthly average. Some heavy downpours look set for north-eastern parts of England and eastern parts of Scotland, according to Ms Glaisyer. Sunshine, showers and strong strong, blustery winds are set to reach parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Temperatures are a little cooler than in recent days, with figures of up to 17-18C in the South and only 13C or 14C across much of Scotland. Conditions are expected to improve on Sunday, with a drier day forecast for many, though showers may linger in parts of the North and East.

Increasing numbers of displays have been spotted, with more of the country able to take in the spectacular sights. Within the last year the Aurora Borealis has stunned the nation with dazzling light displays being visible as far south as Dorset, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Berkshire. Northern Lights sightings have increased in recent years and the explanation is well known in the science community, the Met Office has said. The aurora is concentrated at the Earth's north and south poles (Image: Owen Humphreys/PA Wire) Krista Hammond, a Manager at the Met Office Space Weather Operations Centre (MOSWOC), said: 'Activity on the sun, and in particular the number of visible sunspots, varies over roughly an 11-year period, known as the solar cycle.' The last solar minimum, which is when the Sun had the lowest frequency of visible sunspots in the solar cycle, occurred in December 2019. This means that the sun's activity is currently increasing, with the next solar maximum expected around July this year. As a result, more of the Sun's electrically charged particles are travelling towards the Earth and getting caught in its magnetic field, thus producing more of the aurora effect. Krista added: 'Over the coming years, as we continue towards the solar maximum, we can expect to see an increase in the frequency of space weather events, with more chances to see the Aurora Borealis over the UK.' What causes the Northern Lights? The Royal Museums Greenwich explained: 'Solar storms on our star's surface give out huge clouds of electrically charged particles. These particles can travel millions of miles, and some may eventually collide with the Earth. 'Most of these particles are deflected away, but some become captured in the Earth's magnetic field, accelerating down towards the north and south poles into the atmosphere. This is why aurora activity is concentrated at the magnetic poles.' Royal Observatory astronomer, Tom Kerss added: 'These particles then slam into atoms and molecules in the Earth's atmosphere and essentially heat them up. 'We call this physical process 'excitation', but it's very much like heating a gas and making it glow.' Can I see the Northern Lights in the UK? The Royal Museums Greenwich said: 'The aurora borealis can be seen in the northern hemisphere, while the aurora australis is found in the southern hemisphere. 'While the best places to see the aurora are concentrated around the polar regions, the aurora borealis can sometimes be seen in the UK. 'The further north you are the more likely you are to see the display – but heightened solar activity has meant that the northern lights have been seen as far south as Cornwall and Brighton. 'The conditions do still need to be right however. Dark and clear nights, preferably with little light pollution, offer the best chance of seeing the aurora.'

Millions of Brits will be blighted by thunderstorms ruining their Saturday until this evening, with as much as 40mm of rain expected to fall in some parts of the country Thunderstorms are expected to bring more rain in nine hours today than the UK saw in the whole of April. Met Office forecasters have issued a yellow thunderstorm weather warning for the South East, East Anglia, the Midlands, the South West and southern Wales - lasting until 6pm today. The Met Office warned that between 10mm to 15mm could fall in less than an hour, while some regions could see as much as between 30mm and 40mm. The yellow weather alert will remain in the affected regions until 6pm tonight, with people being warned about potential delays to train and bus services. ‌ ‌ Some buildings could also be vulnerable to lightning strikes, the Met Office said. In England, the amount of rainfall could be more in a single day than the entirety of April, which saw 28.3mm in total. The rest of Saturday will be "very showery" with heavy rainfall as well as gusty winds and hail. Met Office Chief Meteorologist Dan Suri said: 'Frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected for much of Saturday, before they fade from the west during the mid-to-late afternoon. "It's possible that 10-15mm of rain could fall in less than an hour, while some places could see 30-40mm of rain over several hours from successive showers and thunderstorms. Frequent lightning, hail, and strong, gusty winds are also possible. "A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued and covers parts of central and southern England and Wales. While brisk winds ensure that most places in the warning area will be hit by showers, not all places will see thunderstorms. In this case it's difficult to predict where exactly thunderstorms will hit because they are small and fast changing. "One analogy we use to picture the complexity of this forecasting challenge is comparing it to boiling a pan of water and having to guess exactly where and when the bubbles will appear. We know some will, but only in certain places, and that is why thunderstorms are so hard to predict." Thankfully, conditions should be "quieter" and "drier" for most on Sunday. There will be some showers around in the north and east of the country. But for many, clear and sunny spells are expected. Next week, sunshine and showers are expected in the north with plenty of dry weather in the south. The Met Office said Tuesday would see the possibility of a new low-pressure-system potentially pushing another weather front over the UK. Temperatures look set to rise with high 20Cs possible in the southeast on Thursday. The warm air will also bring further risk of thunderstorms by the end of the week.
