Canada rugby 7s captain Olivia Apps scores in Hong Kong to reach 300-point milestone

Captain Olivia Apps reached the 300-point plateau in HSBC SVNS play while Taylor Perry scored her first try in World Rugby's elite sevens series as Canada opened play at the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens with a win and a loss Friday.
Canada opened with a 24-17 victory over No. 5 Japan before dropping a 26-15 decision to No. 2 Australia. It will wrap up Pool C play against No. 12 Spain.
The Hong Kong event is being held at the new Kai Tak Stadium.
The Canadian women stand sixth in the overall standings after finishing eighth in Dubai, fifth in Cape Town, fourth in Perth and seventh last month in Vancouver. New Zealand tops the table, winning in Cape Town and Vancouver and finishing runner-up to Australia in Dubai and Perth, Australia.
Hong Kong marks Perry's first action for the sevens side since winning silver at last summer's Paris Olympics. Perry has been playing 15s rugby in England with the Exeter Chiefs.
Apps, who arrived in Hong Kong on 296 points in HSBC SVNS play, is captaining the side in the absence of the injured Piper Logan.
Following Hong Kong, the circuit shifts to Singapore for the penultimate event of the season April 5-6. The top eight men's and women's teams will then compete in the May 3-4 season-ending world championship at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif.
The California finale will also feature a promotion/relegation playoff involving the top four men's and women's teams from the second-tier HSBC Sevens Challenger and the bottom four teams on the HSBC SVNS circuit.
The Canadian men, relegated last June, are set to take part in the final Challenger Series event April 11-12 in Krakow, Poland.

The 27-year-old veteran is done for the season after suffering an unspecified elbow/tricep injury against the Roughriders. Addae, a key member of the Redblacks defence, is expected to be replaced by fellow Canadian and former B.C. Lion Charlie Ringland. 'I feel for Alonzo because of the way he was playing, the way he was communicating in the secondary, and I know how much work he put in in this off-season,' Dyce said of Addae, whose 2024 season was cut short after 14 games by a knee injury. Shiltz, a 32-year-old native of St. Charles, Ill., also carried the ball 14 times for 133 yards. 'They're totally different quarterbacks,' Dyce said in comparing the styles of Brown and Shiltz. 'Matt's probably a little bit more mobile. He adds the dimension of running maybe a little bit more. They're both fantastic leaders. They both can make all the throws that they need to make.' Shiltz will be facing a tough defence on Friday. In last week's 28-10 victory over the defending champion Toronto Argos, the Alouettes allowed reigning Grey Cup MVP Nick Arbuckle just 20 of 32 completions for 273 yards and a touchdown while also picking him off twice.

That would be the big four WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO titles. 'I want all the (championship) belts,' said Galle. The undisputed bantamweight (118-pound) title is on the line July 11 on MVP's all-women boxing card at Madison Square Garden, headlined by the trilogy fight between Ireland's Katie Taylor and Puerto Rico's Amanda Serrano for the undisputed super-lightweight title. The card sees American Shurretta Metcalf take on New Zealand-born Australian Cherneka Johnson with the bantamweight titles on the line. Galle won the vacant IBO title by in December 2023 defeating Venezuela's Niorkis Carreno and won a rematch last time out in December. 'I've been in the gym the last six months … feeling very strong, healthy and in shape,' she said. So ready that she told MVP that she is ready to step in, if needed, on the July 11 card. Galle started in combat sports at age six, earning her black belt in karate after being inspired by TV's 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.' Switching to boxing, she had her first fight at 16 and went on to win three national titles (on 2009, 2013 and 2018). Galle turned pro in 2019. Her nickname Bambola is Italian for doll. 'Fourteen years as an amateur (boxer), six years as a pro, I'm doing 20 years of boxing and I still classify my face as being a beautiful doll. So I'm fulfilling that name all right,' she said with a chuckle. A graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) in early childhood education, Galle has always trained at All Canadian Martial Arts Academy in Mississauga. Today she teaches boxing at the gym's academy. She is also an ambassador for Fight To End Cancer in honour of her mother, who died in 2022 — nine years after being diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer.
