Nvidia, HPE to build new supercomputer in Germany

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Nvidia and Hewlett Packard Enterprise said on Tuesday they are partnering with the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre to build a new supercomputer using Nvidia's next-generation chips.
The Blue Lion supercomputer, as the project is called, will become available to scientists in early 2027, using Nvidia's "Vera Rubin" chips.
The announcement, made at a supercomputing conference in Hamburg, Germany, follows Nvidia's announcement that the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in the United States also plans to build a system using the chips next year.
Separately, Nvidia also said that Jupiter, another supercomputer using its chips at German national research institute Forschungszentrum Julich, has officially become Europe's fastest system.
The deals represent European institutions aiming to stay competitive against the U.S. in supercomputers used for scientific fields from biotechnology to climate research.
Long before it became an artificial intelligence powerhouse, Nvidia set out to persuade scientists to use its chips to speed up complex computer problems, such as modeling climate change. Those problems required many precise calculations that could take months at a time.
Nvidia is now working to persuade scientists to use artificial intelligence. Those AI systems can take the results of a few precise calculations and use them to make predictions that, while not as accurate as the fully calculated results, can still be useful while taking far less time.
Nvidia on Tuesday unveiled what it calls its "Climate in a Bottle" AI model. In a press briefing, Dion Harris, head of data center product marketing at Nvidia, said scientists will be able to input a few initial conditions such as sea surface temperatures and generate a forecast for 10 to 30 years in the future and see what the weather may be like at any kilometer or so of the earth's surface.
"Researchers will use combined approach of classic physics and AI to resolve turbulent atmospheric flows," Harris said. "This technique will allow them to analyze thousands and thousands more scenarios in greater detail than ever before."

Consumer Reports urges Congress to drop electric vehicle tax proposal
By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) -An influential consumer organization on Wednesday urged Republican lawmakers to drop a plan to impose a proposed $250 annual fee on electric cars to pay for road repairs. Consumer Reports, which also tests and rates new vehicles, noted that Republican Senator Bernie Moreno has called for boosting the proposed yearly fee to $500 for EVs and $250 for plug-in hybrids versus the tax and budget bill over the fee in the bill approved by the U.S. House in May. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT The fees would mean consumers would pay anywhere from three to seven times as much as owners of similar conventional gasoline vehicles in federal gas taxes, Consumer Reports said. The new fees could hit Tesla, GM other EV owners. KEY QUOTES Chris Harto, senior policy analyst at Consumer Reports said the EV fees were "punitive taxes designed to confiscate fuel savings from consumers who just want to save money for their families." CONTEXT Lawmakers in April dropped a $20 federal yearly registration fee on all vehicles starting in 2031 to fund road repairs. The U.S. House bill would end a $7,500 tax credit for new EVs for most automakers by Dec. 31, end a $4,000 used car EV tax credit, repeal vehicle emissions rules and kill an Energy Department loan program that supports the manufacture of green advanced technology vehicles. It would also phase out EV battery production tax credits in 2028. Ford said the bill's provision to eliminate EV battery production using Chinese technology threatens the automaker's projected $3 billion investment in a Marshall, Michigan, plant that is 60% complete and slated to employ 1,700 workers. On Thursday, President Donald Trump will sign three resolutions approved by lawmakers barring California's electric vehicle sales mandates and diesel engine rules, auto industry and House aides told Reuters.

Trump plans memorial to his mother on new Scottish golf course
Donald Trump is creating a memorial garden to his Scottish mother on the site of his new golf course in Aberdeenshire. The main feature of the garden will be a tribute carved in stone imported from Mary Anne Trump's birthplace, the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. The announcement of Mr Trump's tribute to his mother came as Trump International Scotland unveiled the layout for a new course alongside the existing links course on his Menie estate. It is set to formally open this summer. Known officially as the Old and the New, the courses will combine to create what the company describes as ' the greatest 36 holes in golf' on the Aberdeenshire coast. The US president's mother was born Mary Anne MacLeod on Lewis, but emigrated to New York in 1930 when she was 18. She was one of tens of thousands of Scots who travelled to the US and Canada in the early years of the last century looking to escape economic hardship at home. She was hired as a domestic servant at the Carnegie Mansion on New York's Fifth Avenue and six years later married Frederick Trump, the successful property developer son of German migrants, and one of the most eligible men in New York. The US president was the fourth of the couple's five children. Mr Trump has spoken fondly of his mother, who died in 2000, aged 88. He said in an interview last year: 'The Scottish very great people, they're tough people. They're good fighters. [My mother] was funny, she had a great sense of humour.'
