NZ Post unveils $250 million Auckland processing centre
NZ Post chief executive David Walsh said the facility has the capacity to grow for the next 15-20 years.
'The APC is a critical piece of infrastructure that will benefit New Zealand as e-commerce continues to grow here and internationally, as well as supporting New Zealand export businesses that are trading internationally,' Walsh said.
'In the years to come, we expect Kiwis to shop online more often, with an increased dependency on a delivery network that is reliable and offers greater visibility in real time.'
Walsh, who has been with NZ Post for almost a decade, said that when he started, New Zealanders were buying about one in 20 items online. Now it's about one in 10.
He said the package sorter was one of the biggest anywhere, with 1800 bags available for items to be sorted into.
Each of those 1800 bags represents a delivery person somewhere in the North Island.
'I live in Wellington, so one of these bags or two of these bags will be from my courier. We used to have to move all this to Wellington to manually sort it, now it'll hit Wellington and the courier will pick up that bag and it won't be sorted again.'
To help simplify the process, parcels are sorted into two machines determined by their size, one for large parcels and the other for anything smaller than a shoe box.
Any oversized parcels or those that contain fragile items are intercepted manually and redirected for processing in a separate area of the facility.
With 200 people working in the facility at any one time at night to process parcels, the new capability also comes with a serious promise from the business.
'Our service promises to pick anything up in New Zealand today and deliver anywhere in New Zealand tomorrow.'
The new facility will include the presence of the New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) on site.
NZ Post has always worked with MPI and Customs at the international mail centre at Auckland Airport, but Walsh explained that when talks began about investing in parcel automation, it became clear they needed to be part of the process.

'It's been an incredible relationship because they want to keep the border safe, we want to make sure we can move freight through efficiently.'
Customs operations manager Lesley McLinden said the facility was a massive change from the old environment.
'The automation in the processing and the movement of the packages here, and also within the Customs rooms themselves and the MPI facilities. We share access to X-ray images, which is one of our key risk assessment tools. We also have some more updated examination equipment.'
She said Customs had also worked closely with NZ Post to develop an automated targeting system, which allows team members to see all information about incoming packages and screen them electronically.
Part of the conveyor line includes inspections by Customs sniffer dogs, which are rostered to work in the facility for certain hours of the day before returning to other duties at Auckland Airport.
Despite the level of automation in security screening, human oversight and profiling are always present to ensure the highest level of scrutiny.

Customs and MPI officials explained that all images from X-rays get sent directly into a separate processing room, where they can investigate them and make informed decisions about what to do next, including potentially opening packages when necessary.
'The security integrity of our entire system is really well managed throughout the electronic tracking process, which is a huge step forward in capability for all of us,' one official said.
Walsh said NZ Post had been around for 185 years, and this facility was the next step in its evolution to serve its customers across the country.
Looking ahead, Walsh said he would spend the next three to four years making sure NZ Post continued to be a great New Zealand business and service provider.

Nationwide public transport card delayed again, minister 'concerned'
Transport Minister Chris Bishop has urged officials to get "back on track" as fresh delays hit the roll-out of NZTA's new national public transport ticketing system. The Motu Move system was supposed to launch in Timaru and Temuka by mid-2025, but has since been delayed due to "challenges with delivery". Transport officials didn't provide an updated date for when the new card would actually launch, when queried this week. It's the third missed launch target the project has faced in the past nine months. The setback comes as an independent review has been launched into the National Ticketing Solution (NTS) by the programme's governance group. (Source: Getty) A spokesperson for NZTA said: "Work is underway to understand the options with a revised delivery plan for Canterbury expected to be confirmed in the next few months. "The National Ticketing Solution team is also working on a revised regional roll-out plan and timeline for the rest of the country. This is expected to be confirmed in August." The NTS project will replace all transit cards used on buses, trains and ferries around the country with a single national card, which will be branded under "Motu Move". It will include the phasing out of several existing payment methods, including Snapper in Wellington, Metrocard in Christchurch and Bee cards. The project has cost $146 million since 2018, according to figures up until December and released to the Taxpayers Union. NTS has been budgeted to cost $1.3 billion over 15 years. ADVERTISEMENT An initial December 2024 launch date in Timaru and Temuka - a smaller region with relatively limited public transport services - was pushed to early this year and then mid-2025. A January launch date for Greater Christchurch was also delayed to September. It follows a tortured multi-year process to develop the national smartcard system, which includes the ability to pay with contactless debit cards and smartphones. Kiwis will have the option of paying for public transport with their debit or credit card, or digital payment method. (Source: 1News) Bishop said he was "concerned" about the programme and "delays to rolling it out". "I have recently met with the National Ticketing Solution governance group to stress the significant investment the Government is making in the project, and to encourage them to exercise leadership to get the project back on track," he said in a statement. "The group has commissioned an independent review into the project to identify opportunities for improvement in the programme, and I expect to receive a copy of its findings in July, along with a plan to deliver the project." 'Alternative delivery approach' being considered ADVERTISEMENT In December, a "pilot" of the system was deployed on one bus line in Christchurch, which allowed people to use contactless cards to tap on if they were paying adult fares. The pilot hasn't included the wide distribution or use of Motu Move cards. An NZTA spokesperson said findings from the pilot would be used to potentially roll out "features" of the new system sooner in "phases". "The NTS programme team has been exploring alternative delivery approaches for Canterbury to implement Motu Move features in phases, building on the success of the contactless payments pilot on the route 29 bus." The most recent delay follows a long development process for the smartcard system, which has been put together by NZTA in various forms since 2009. Subsequent developments have seen a litany of delays and posited launch dates scrapped. In March, Bishop was briefed that US system supplier Cubic was bringing in "additional capacity" to "accelerate progress" on the project after the first set of recent delays. Meanwhile, a review carried out on the NTS project in October found "significant issues already exist requiring management attention", according to a brief summary provided by NZTA. The agency refused to release a full copy of the report to 1News. The review came shortly before the roll-out was first delayed from its December target. It also concluded the programme was "well governed, led and resourced" and that the significant issues were "viewed as resolvable at the time of the review".

Library Association Congratulate Christchurch City Council For Recognising Pay Equity For Library Workers
The Library and Information Association of NZ Aotearoa (LIANZA) congratulate Christchurch City Council for announcing a pay increase for Council library workers. The association say that this is great news after the recent dismantling of Pay Equity Legislation in May. 'We know that library workers are very upset with the government for the sudden change in pay equity legislation, which sees library assistants starting from ground zero despite their claims being lodged six years ago,' says Laura Marshall, LIANZA executive director. 'So, Christchurch City Council's acknowledgement of the need for fair pay and the historic underpayment of library workers based on their gender is encouraging. 'We'd love to see other councils being as proactive in recognising this historic underpayment.' The Christchurch City Council was party to one of the six claims made six years ago, along with six different councils, on the basis that the work of librarians and library assistants is historically and currently undervalued, as it is predominantly performed by women. On May 30, Andrew Rutledge, General Manager, Citizens and Community at Christchurch City Council, made an announcement on behalf of the organisation relating to the discontinuation of the shelvers and library assistants' gender-based pay equity claim. This is a result of the government's changes to the Equal Pay Act in May. Andrew Rutledge announced that library shelvers, library assistants and librarians would be receiving a pay increase. Pay rates are expected to increase by 10-14%. In making this announcement, Andrew Rutlege acknowledged that the librarian role has historically been a female-dominated role (80% of library workers are women) and, in all likelihood, would qualify for consideration under the Amended Equal Pay Act. 'We would like to acknowledge Christchurch City Council's proactive stance in implementing these changes and hope it impacts on the pay rates for all library workers in New Zealand. 'And we'd like to see this start the ball rolling in other councils.' LIANZA say that while these increases are unlikely to meet comparator levels of pay, they are higher than the average pay rate of a library assistant - around $57,000 a year. 'It's good to see this recognition of the disparity many library workers face with their pay. They deserve to be paid a fair wage. 'Many library workers have spent 4-6 years in tertiary education and are undertaking highly skilled and demanding roles.' LIANZA says librarians are information managers, researchers and programme deliverers. They manage a massive public resource, and sizable budgets aimed at educating and enhancing the knowledge and skill levels of New Zealanders across the community and various sectors. Selecting, purchasing, and maintaining these assets requires skills and a wide knowledge base. In many libraries, it also means dealing with stressed community members, teaching and providing programmes, being digital enablers and providing social as well as education and knowledge support. Evidence collected for the library assistant claims revealed that the skills required for this work are categorised into 22 distinct areas, ranging from information technology to communication, cultural sensitivity, legal expertise, teaching skills, and financial management. With responsibilities being extremely broad-ranging, they include responsibilities for the well-being and safety of others, information technology, management, books and collections, and events and programmes. Working conditions are very busy, emotionally demanding, and involve flexibility to switch rapidly between different tasks, as well as exposure to infection. A high level of effort is required by Library Assistants, including constant vigilance, no downtime, and physical effort to move large numbers of books. In 2023, a pay equity claim for school librarians was settled and which delivered10- 40% pay increases for many.
