Court to hear Tahawwur Rana's 26/11 plea for family contact on 9 June
Tahawwur Rana, accused in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks case and extradited from the US, seeks court approval to communicate with family while in judicial custody
New Delhi
A Delhi court is scheduled to hear on June 9 a plea filed by Tahawwur Hussain Rana, accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case, seeking permission to communicate with his family members.
Rana, a 64-year-old Canadian national of Pakistani origin, is currently in judicial custody following his extradition from the United States. He is alleged to have conspired with David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani, a US citizen and key conspirator in the attacks, along with operatives of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami, and other Pakistan-based individuals.
Rana was brought to India after the US Supreme Court on April 4 dismissed his plea challenging the extradition.
On Wednesday, Special Judge Chander Jit Singh took on record the reply submitted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and directed the jail authorities to file their response. The court also permitted Tihar Jail officials to respond based on the NIA's submission.
Details of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks
The 26/11 attacks were carried out by 10 armed men from Pakistan who entered Mumbai via the sea route on November 26, 2008. The attackers targeted several locations, including a railway station, two hotels, and a Jewish Chabad house, resulting in 166 deaths over a nearly 60-hour-long siege.
Only one of the attackers, Ajmal Kasab, was captured alive. He was executed on November 21, 2012, after exhausting all legal remedies.

Bangladesh elections set for April 2026; Yunus rules out early polls
Bangladesh will hold its next general elections in the first half of April 2026, interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus announced on Friday, rejecting Opposition demands for an earlier vote. In his national address ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, Yunus confirmed that the election commission would release a detailed roadmap in the coming months. "The government has held discussions with all parties to organise the most free, fair, competitive and acceptable elections in history. In addition, after reviewing the ongoing reform activities related to justice, reform and elections, I am announcing to the people of the country today that the next national elections will be held on a day in the first half of April 2026," he said. The timing of the elections has been at the centre of a growing dispute between Yunus and the Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. The BNP has insisted that elections be held by December this year. Earlier, during a visit to Japan, Yunus stated that the polls could be held any time between December 2025 and June 2026, depending on how quickly electoral and governance reforms progressed. He made the remarks at a public event in Tokyo on the same day the BNP staged a massive rally in Dhaka, demanding the return of what it called 'the political rights of the youth.' BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman issued a sharp warning to the interim government, urging it not to delay the polls. Bangladesh has lacked a permanent elected government since Sheikh Hasina was forced into exile in August 2024. Her departure came amid large-scale protests over a controversial welfare and tax-exemption policy for families of 1971 war veterans. Since then, Nobel laureate Yunus has led the interim government. His tenure has seen strained ties with India — first over rising violence against religious minorities, including Hindus, and later over his contentious remarks about New Delhi.

Arrested explosives godown owner quizzed for 2nd day
Rourkela: Interrogation of the owner of an explosives godown, Shravan Agrawal, who was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly violating standard operating procedures, continued for the second day at Raghunathpalli police station here on Friday. Agrawal and his driver, Birsa Samad alias Ishak, were arrested for allegedly violating SOPs related to explosives materials. The arrests followed after Maoists looted 5,000 kg of explosives from Banko stone quarry in Sundargarh district on May 27. The police crackdown intensified after explosives were discovered in a truck near a petrol pump on June 1, followed by the seizure of another truck with illegal explosives on June 3. Both the accused have been charged under various sections of BNS and Explosives Substance Act. Investigation revealed Agrawal owns four warehouses in Bargaon, Sundargarh, with two registered in his wife Nikita's name. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is also probing the Maoist explosives loot. The SIT, led by additional SP H K Majhi, has sealed all four warehouses after stock verification. Agrawal was brought on a two-day remand to verify tax documents from explosives unit in Maharashtra and Telangana. Sales tax authorities also examined the papers on Friday. Nikita will also be questioned. "Our investigation is progressing," said Majhi. Deputy director of mines (Rourkela), Bimbadhar Sethi, has been asked to submit documents regarding permissions granted to the stone quarry for blasting. Around 3.8 tonnes of the looted explosives have been recovered, with joint search operations ongoing to trace the remaining cosnignment.

NIA arrests absconding accused in Thiruvananthapuram gold smuggling case
Kochi: One of the absconding accused in the controversial Thiruvananthapuram gold smuggling case was arrested by National Investigation Agency (NIA) on June 2. The case pertains to the alleged smuggling of gold involving diplomatic baggage in 2020. The arrested person, Sidhiqul Akbar of Malappuram, was on the run since 2020. NIA intercepted him when he arrived in Kerala via flight. He was taken into custody based on a tip-off. The accused was remanded in judicial custody on Thursday when he was produced before the NIA court after the expiry of a three-day NIA custody. Sidhiqul was the 15th accused in the case. He was allegedly a key link in the racket involved in smuggling gold from the UAE to Thiruvananthapuram using diplomatic baggage. He was made an accused in the case in Dec 2020. Ramzan Parancherry, another absconding accused, was arrested in Feb when he arrived from the UAE. At least four more accused persons are still at large.
