Environmental Excellence Hackathon empowers youth innovation

Observer15-04-2025

MUSCAT: The Environment Authority in Al Batinah North Governorate has launched the Environmental Ambassadors Initiative and opened registration for the much-anticipated Environmental Excellence Hackathon, scheduled to take place from May 2 to 4. The initiative aims to inspire youth, developers and environmental enthusiasts to craft creative, tech-driven solutions to pressing environmental challenges.
Announced via the Authority's social media platforms, the hackathon invites programmers, job-seekers, university students and leading tech companies to contribute their expertise and ingenuity in a 48-hour challenge designed to address real-world ecological issues.
Iman al Hosni, Training and Qualification Specialist at the Environment Department and Head of the Environmental Ambassadors Initiative, stated, 'The Environmental Excellence Hackathon brings together developers, designers and innovators to develop innovative solutions to specific environmental problems. Outcomes will include functional prototypes, detailed presentations, impact forecasts and plans for future development.'
Participants will work in teams to brainstorm ideas, design prototypes and build digital tools that tackle key environmental concerns. The hackathon will focus on tracks such as vegetation cover, wildlife, natural resource conservation and pollution. Specific challenges include coastal erosion, climate change, hurricanes, rising temperatures, invasive species, wildlife encroachment, desertification and overgrazing.
With a registration deadline set for April 23, the initiative reflects the Sultanate of Oman's steadfast commitment to sustainable development. It also emphasises the growing role of modern technologies in addressing environmental issues, promoting efficiency, adaptability and cost-effectiveness.
Beyond the competition, participants will benefit from educational workshops, expert consultation sessions and a stimulating environment enriched with cash prizes and certificates of participation from the Environment Authority.
By merging technology with sustainability, the Environmental Excellence Hackathon stands as a beacon for youth empowerment and environmental innovation in Oman.

EA launches ‘Naqi' air quality index application

MUSCAT: The Environment Authority (EA) on Monday launched a new digital platform, the 'Naqi' (Pure) app, for smartphones, providing users with real-time, accurate air quality index data. The 'Naqi' app features advanced capabilities, including an interactive real-time air quality map based on geographic location, along with detailed reports on pollutants such as fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and other variables. The 'Naqi' platform will be accessible via its website and the app for all iOS and Android users, supporting Oman's environmental sustainability vision and digital transformation. The app utilises a visual alert system with a colour-coded scheme (from green for good quality to red for hazardous conditions) for quick and effective air quality assessment. It also provides current weather data, integrating air quality and weather conditions to enhance users' daily planning accuracy. The platform supports both Arabic and English to broaden its user base. The app's launch coincides with World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5, to advance digital transformation in environmental systems, improve access to environmental information and enhance quality of life. - ONA

Endangered vulture rehabilitated at Wadi Sireen Nature Reserve

Muscat – In a move aimed at strengthening avian conservation, the Environment Authority, in collaboration with the Environment Society of Oman, has released a lappet-faced vulture (Torgos tracheliotos) into the wild at Wadi Sireen Nature Reserve in South Batinah. The bird, listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), was rehabilitated following an intensive care programme. It has now been fitted with a satellite tracking device to monitor its movement, nesting behaviour and habitat preferences. The data will help researchers understand the species' ecological needs and accordingly contribute to long-term conservation planning. Ali Nasser al Rasbi, an environmental specialist, said, 'There are more than 38 species of birds in the sultanate, and the lappet-faced vulture is the largest among them. Monitoring its behaviour in the wild provides crucial insights into the overall health of our ecosystems.' Once widespread across Africa and parts of the Arabian Peninsula, populations of the lappet-faced vulture have declined sharply due to poisoning, persecution and habitat loss. Only a small and rapidly shrinking population remains, making conservation initiatives in Oman and elsewhere vital to the species' survival. The reintroduction forms part of a broader strategy by the Environment Authority to protect endangered and vulnerable bird species across Oman. The programme aims to support biodiversity, maintain ecological balance, and raise awareness about the critical role vultures play as natural scavengers. Wadi Sireen Nature Reserve, about 45km south of Muscat in the eastern Al Hajar Mountains, was chosen for the release due to its protected status and biodiversity. It is also home to endangered Arabian tahr, among other rare wildlife, making it a key site for ongoing and future conservation efforts.

New app ‘Naqi' offers real-time air pollution updates across Oman

Muscat – In a step towards enhancing environmental awareness and public health, Environment Authority (EA) has launched a new mobile application – Naqi – designed to provide real-time air quality updates across Oman. The app was officially unveiled on Monday in the lead-up to World Environment Day observed annually on June 5. Available on both iOS and Android platforms in Arabic and English, Naqi offers a user-friendly interface and a host of advanced features that allow residents, commuters and health-conscious users to monitor air quality with precision. It also supports access via web browsers, broadening its availability on all digital platforms. One of the standout features of Naqi is its interactive map, which displays real-time air quality indicators based on users' geographic location. It offers comprehensive reports on key air pollutants, including PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide, among others. To help users make informed decisions, the app employs a colour-coded alert system – ranging from green (indicating good air quality) to red (indicating hazardous conditions). This intuitive visual guide simplifies understanding for users of all ages. In addition to pollution data, Naqi integrates live weather information, offering a holistic view of environmental conditions. This combination enhances the app's utility for daily planning, particularly for those with respiratory conditions, outdoor workers and athletes. The launch aligns with Oman's national efforts towards digital transformation, environmental sustainability and meeting the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. EA officials emphasised the fact that the app will play a vital role in raising environmental awareness and providing reliable and up-to-date information to improve quality of life. With air quality increasingly recognised as a key determinant of public health, especially in urban areas like Muscat, the rollout of Naqi marks a forward-thinking approach to environmental monitoring in the sultanate.
