June 19 (UPI) -- Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Thursday that it will hand a letter of protest to Cambodia's government after a call between the two countries was allegedly leaked by a high-profile Cambodian official.
In a press release, the Thai agency said "These actions taken by the Cambodian side are totally unacceptable. It is a breach of diplomatic etiquette, a serious violation of trust, and undermines conduct between two neighboring countries."
The protest comes after Cambodian Senate President Samdech Hun Sen posted a call between himself and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Facebook Wednesday. The conversation took place Sunday and Paetongtarn allegedly criticized the Thai military and called Hun Sen "uncle."
The call was held to discuss the ongoing border dispute between the nations, which has led to some conflict and the death of a Cambodian soldier last month.
Paetongtarn can be heard in the call telling Hun Sen not to listen to public statements made by a Thai military official, and that if Hun Sen wants something, "he can just tell me, and I will take care of it."
Paetongtarn publicly apologized Wednesday and said at a press conference the call went as it did because she was employing negotiation tactics, and that now she realizes the release of the call by Hun Sen is "political theater."
Thailand's Foreign Affairs Ministry also accused Cambodia on Thursday of using social media "to gain popularity among their people and to divide society in both countries."
Since the incident took place, Thai's Bhumjaithai party, a partner of the prime minister's administration, announced it left Paetongtarn's coalition Wednesday, which makes it much more difficult for her Pheu Thai party's ability to maintain its control.
Hun Sen was the top Cambodian leader for nearly 40 years, and despite having stepped down in 2023 and putting his son, Hun Manet, in charge. He remains a powerful political figure in his country, though
He also is a long-time ally of Paetongtarn's father, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and her calling Hun Sen "uncle" has fueled her critics who said she appeared to be unacceptably deferential to him during the call.

Trump approves 3rd deadline extension for sale of TikTok
President Donald Trump Thursday extended a deadline for Chinese parent company ByteDance to sell TikTok. The deadline for that to happen was supposed to be Thursday, but it was extended until September 17. File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo June 19 (UPI) -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday extended a deadline for Chinese parent company ByteDance to sell TikTok. The deadline for that to happen was supposed to be Thursday. In a social media post, Trump said, "I've just signed the Executive Order extending the Deadline for the TikTok closing for 90 days (September 17, 2025)." It's the third extension Trump has granted. TikTok said in a statement, "We are grateful for President Trump's leadership and support in ensuring that TikTok continues to be available for more than 170 million American users and 7.5 million U.S. businesses that rely on the platform as we continue to work with Vice President Vance's Office." Under federal law signed by former President Joe Biden in 2024, ByteDance must divest TikTok or see the app banned from the United States. The Supreme Court upheld the law in January. The law was passed out of concerns that TikTok poses a significant U.S. data and national security risk due to Chinese government access to the app's data. A possible deal to sell TikTok was derailed by Trump's Chinese tariffs. ByteDance said the Chinese government would not allow the sale of TikTok in the United States while the tariff and trade dispute is ongoing.

Foes seek to oust Peruvian President Boluarte over unreported surgery
June 19 (UPI) -- Peru's congressional oversight committee has approved a report that recommends removal of President Dina Boluarte, alleging she abandoned her post in 2023 to undergo cosmetic surgeries without notifying Congress or formally delegating her duties. The committee approved the report after weeks of investigation that included checking medical records, reviewing the presidential schedule and hearing testimony. According to the report, there is a "high degree of certainty" that Boluarte underwent surgery for cosmetic and functional reasons between June 28 and July 4, 2023. The panel concluded her absence jeopardized the continuity of presidential leadership, real-time decision-making, national emergency response and the overall direction of state policy. "The country cannot accept a president stepping away from her duties to undergo personal surgeries without officially recording her absence, as required by Article 115 of the Peruvian Constitution," said Congressman Juan Burgos, chairman of the congressional oversight committee. The investigation initially focused on Boluarte's undisclosed use of luxury watches and other assets. During the probe, documents emerged showing medical expenses tied to cosmetic procedures, prompting the committee to broaden its inquiry -- later known as the "surgery case." In a national address in December 2024, Boluarte acknowledged undergoing surgery but denied it was cosmetic. "Yes, I underwent a surgical procedure. It was not cosmetic -- it was necessary for my health, essential for respiratory function. ... It did not impair my ability to carry out my duties as president," she said. However, Dr. Mario Cabani, the surgeon who performed the procedures, told the committee that Boluarte underwent multiple cosmetic and functional facial surgeries. The report now heads to the full Congress, which must decide whether to admit it for debate and eventually hold a vote on the motion to remove Boluarte from office. The measure requires 87 votes out of 130 to pass. So far, major opposition blocs support the effort, but lawmakers from Boluarte's ruling coalition and the Fujimorist bloc have withheld support and did not endorse the report in committee. If admitted, it would be the sixth attempt to remove Boluarte since she took office in December 2022. Three motions were filed in 2023 and two in 2024. None secured the votes needed to oust her.
