Providence guard commits to TCU. Who is he?

Yahoo20-04-2025

The Providence College men's basketball team will have a new cast of lead guards next year after an announcement on social media on Sunday.
Jayden Pierre committed to TCU through a post on his Instagram account. He'll spend a final college season in the Big 12 with the Horned Frogs.
Pierre started in 63 of his 97 games with the Friars, including all but one of his last 64. He averaged 12.3 points and 3.2 assists last season, including 23 games in double figures and a season-high eight assists in a loss at Butler. Pierre entered the transfer portal when it opened on March 24 and will join a team that finished 16-16 last year.

'I would like to thank my coaches and the support staff for the opportunities they have created for me during my time here,' Pierre wrote on Instagram. 'To Providence College and the fans that have truly supported my teammates and I through everything year in and year out, I want to thank you.'

Pierre was retained by Providence coach Kim English upon his hiring away from George Mason in 2023-24. Their private game of 1-on-1 at the team practice facility turned into a viral moment on social media, with English winning and partly crediting that result for keeping the New Jersey native at the school. Pierre was part of an NCAA Tournament team as a freshman, recruited by former coach Ed Cooley over offers from Xavier, Creighton, Minnesota, Nebraska, Rutgers, Florida and more.
Both of Pierre's 20-point games last season came prior to the second week of January. He totaled 22 points over his final three games, including seven points on 3-for-13 shooting in a conference tournament loss to the Bulldogs. Pierre's 3-point shooting, assist rate and steal percentage all declined from 2023-24 while his 2-point shooting and foul shooting improved.
The Friars continue to shake up a roster that matched a program record for losses in a season in 2024-25. Providence finished just 12-20 and won a single game after the calendar flipped to February. That was a 75-62 triumph over Villanova, a night in which Pierre went 5-for-9 from 3-point range and Billy Donovan's jersey was retired to the Amica Mutual Pavilion rafters.
Wednesday and Friday saw the Friars accept a handful of commitments, including from perimeter players Daquan Davis, Jason Edwards, Jaylin Sellers and Stefan Vaaks. Davis, Edwards and Sellers are transfers from Florida State, Vanderbilt and Central Florida, respectively. Vaaks will be a freshman addition from his native Estonia.

Providence returns veteran Corey Floyd Jr. and Ryan Mela as perimeter options. The Friars could also bring back Jabri Abdur-Rahim, who is pursuing a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA. Jaylen Harrell and Jamier Jones will join the roster as freshmen, a wing scorer and high-level athletic prospect, respectively.

Would Dan Hurley or Jay Wright entertain the idea of coaching the Knicks?

It was nearly one year ago to the day when reports began to swirl that UConn men's basketball coach Dan Hurley was being targeted for the Los Angeles Lakers' head coaching vacancy. The story took the internet by storm with pundits across the sports media landscape taking their best guess as to whether the Huskies' head coach was going to leave the college game after winning back-to-back national championships for the chance to coach LeBron James in the City of Angels. Hurley made the decision to return to UConn, but with another big-market NBA coaching job now open, could history repeat itself? After the New York Knicks announced they were moving on from head coach Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday, Hurley's name once again became a hot topic of conversation. The 52-year-old coach was born and raised in New Jersey and has spent his entire coaching career on the East Coast. Coming off a disappointing season at UConn, which concluded with a 24-11 record and a second-round NCAA Tournament loss to Florida, would Hurley consider making the jump now to the NBA and taking over the Knicks' head coaching position? FOX Sports college basketball reporter John Fanta joined Jason McIntyre on Wednesday's edition of "The Herd" to discuss the odds of Hurley becoming the next coach of the Knicks. "I don't think that this buzz is going to progress to the degree that we saw the Lakers thing last year and the reporting off of that, talking about him staying at UConn, the layers to it," Fanta said about Hurley potentially leaving Storrs for Manhattan. "I don't think we're going to get down that road. I just don't see it." Fanta added that Hurley would likely "entertain" at least discussing the opening with the Knicks if they reached out, but he doesn't think the situations align at this point in time. "If they go and hire Dan Hurley, is it a splash? Yes." Fanta said. "Hiring Dan Hurley, as much as I think he's a tremendous college coach, I just don't think it's here and now." Hurley is not the only two-time championship coach whose name has been thrown around as a possible candidate for the Knicks' opening. Former Villanova coach Jay Wright has the third-best odds to be named the Knicks' next head coach, listed at +1500. Of course, a big reason for Wright's name being thrown into the mix is the fact that three of his former players at Villanova – Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart – are part of the Knicks' current core. "Could I see Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart trying to orchestrate a FaceTime call with Jay Wright, if they haven't already in the last 24 hours?" Fanta questioned. "Of course, I could see that." But despite the close connection to his former collegiate stars, Fanta was quick to shut down the idea of Wright – who serves as a college basketball studio and game analyst for CBS Sports – becoming the next head coach of the Knicks. "Jay Wright is enjoying red wine, basketball, television and his family," Fanta said. "If he wanted to coach again, he'd be the Villanova coach. "Jay Wright is not going anywhere." Thanatharn selected as new UH softball head coach

The University of Hawai'i has ushered in a new era in Rainbow Wahine softball, naming Panita Thanatharn as its next head coach, the school announced Wednesday, four weeks after the conclusion of the 2025 season. Thanatharn, a Long Beach State alumna, spent the past 14 seasons on staff with the 49ers, including the last nine as associate head coach. During her tenure, she helped lead LBSU to four Big West Conference championships and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. She now takes the reins from legendary head coach Bob Coolen, who retired after 34 seasons at UH. Coolen leaves behind a storied legacy that includes more than 1,100 career wins, 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, and a trip to the Women's College World Series in 2010. Among the finalists for the position was longtime UH assistant coach Dee Wisneski. Key returnees for the 2026 season include standout players Milan Ah Yat and Carys Murakami, serving as a strong foundation as Thanatharn begins her tenure.
