Ospreys count cost of European elimination
Ospreys have been left to count the cost of the end of their European adventure after an agonising Challenge Cup quarter-final defeat 20-18 defeat against Lyon.Influential forward trio Justin Tipuric, Adam Beard and Rhys Davies all picked up injuries and are set to miss the Judgement Day game with Cardiff at the Principality Stadium next Saturday."They're being assessed and it is a bit of a mixture," said Ospreys head coach Mark Jones."They're obviously not great or they wouldn't have come off if they were. "They'll probably miss next week based on what we've seen earlier. "But we've not seen any further than that, so I can't say any further than that without speaking to the physios or the doctor."
Tipuric concern
Tipuric was forced off early on with a pectoral muscle problem that will make him a doubt for the home game against Dragons on 26 April.That occasion is being billed as the flanker's last match in Swansea before he retires from playing at the end of the season to become the Ospreys' defence coach."He felt something in his pec area that he was uncomfortable with," said Jones."When you're a guy in a line-out like he is aerially or uses your hands in the contact area like he does, you've got to be able to use two hands on the rugby field. "He's a tough cookie so for him to come off, there must have been a serious amount of discomfort for him."Ospreys are aiming to finish in the top eight of the United Rugby Championship (URC) again and need to beat Matt Sherratt's men to keep that dream alive.Following two Welsh derbies, Ospreys finish the regular season with two games in South Africa."Judgement Day becomes a big focus for us and we hopefully have an opportunity to have a good crack at that," said Jones."If we can get some momentum through the next couple of week hopefully we can push for potentially getting in the top eight when we get to South Africa."
European woe
Jones was left to reflect on a disappointing European exit after his side went toe-to-toe with their French Top 14 opponents, captain Jac Morgan again outstanding.In front of a crowd of only 3,723, Ospreys ultimately missed out on a possible chance of extra-time when Dan Edwards' conversion attempt of George McGuigan's 71st-minute try hit a post.That ended Welsh involvement in Europe for another season with Cardiff hosting the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup finals in May."It's disappointing because the effort was there, as you would expect, but we definitely dropped below a level of accuracy that we've shown over the last few months," said Jones."Some of that was down to Lyon and the pressure they put on us around the contact area, but also a lot of skill-set stuff there we are a bit disappointed with."The little errors add up at the end and that's disappointing because a lot of it was in our control."Ospreys dominated possession and territory in Swansea and forced Lyon to make more than double the tackles of their opponents.The Welsh side ultimately though lacked game management at crucial times."We wanted the ball, dictate the speed of the game and move their big guys around," said Jones."We did move them around, but we just didn't move them around well enough and accurately enough."It is a good lesson for us that the closer you get to the finish line the more accurate you have got to be."All we can do is learn from it and hopefully we get into future knockout games. "We want to build on this one and take the next step forward."

All the Welsh people to be given honours by the King
A total of 65 Welsh people have been recognised by the King in his 2025 birthday honours list. Those nominated range from people who have dedicated their lives to the NHS, public service, sport and education among others. This year's awards acknowledge exceptional contributions by individuals in their sector, particularly highlighting community champions and acts of selfless giving. The list for Wales includes a Knighthood for The Rt. Hon. Mark Tami, Member of Parliament for Alyn and Deeside. for his Political and Public service work. Earlier this week Rugby League player Billy Boston from Cardiff also received a Knighthood for his services to the sport, becoming the first Rugby League player to receive the honour. He received the accolade earlier due to concerns about his health. Billy has not been officially included in the list of Welsh people provided by the UK Government's Wales office due to living in Wigan at the time of the award. Among those honoured is ITV Cymru Wales weather presenter Ruth Dodsworth for her services to victims and survivors of domestic abuse. Speaking after receiving the award, Ruth said: "It feels all a bit surreal and completely unbelievable, and I'm over the moon. It's just the biggest honour I think I have ever had in my entire life. "This is not just for me this is for my family, my friends and everybody who has been on this very strange journey that I've been on, everybody who has supported me. "And this is for everybody who is going on journeys of their own as well because it's not easy and domestic abuse is out there and it's everywhere. "That's why this honour is also so important because it allows me to keep that conversation going. I'm going to use it wisely and then hopefully one day we won't have to talk about domestic abuse because it won't be an issue anymore. "But until that point, this honour is for everybody who has been affected by domestic abuse and I'm just so proud." David Lewis, the founder of Young Voices, has also been awarded a OBE for his notable contributions and services to music in Britain. Young Voices has reached millions of children across the globe, giving them the opportunity to sing in world-class arenas alongside professional artists. "When I founded Young Voices 30 years ago, it was for a simple reason: to give every child a live music experience they would never forget. Former Northern Ireland star thrilled to take reins of St Johnstone Under-19s
Griffin, who earned 29 caps, progressed through the Saints academy after arriving in Perth from Belfast as a 15-year-old in 1994. He made more than 120 appearances for the club, as well as earning international recognition. Griffin captained Saints at the age of just 18 and was involved in memorable European games against VPS Vaasa and Monaco. The 47-year-old, who officially begins his new role on Monday, has been football co-ordinator with Saints in the Community. 'This is a chance that I have always really wanted, and it is a great opportunity for me,' he told club media. 'I started here as a 15-year-old wanting to become a footballer. I lived my dream through this football club. 'Now being able to help other youngsters try to live that same dream is going to be very special. Pre-season is just around the corner so it is an exciting time. I like to think I've learned a lot over the years in football — and sometimes learned the hard way. I have experience to pass on to these guys. 'I'll need them all to work hard. It's down to them how far they want to go. But I'll certainly be doing my very best to help them every step of the way. 'This football club has a reputation of bringing talented kids through the academy — there is no reason we can't keep doing it. I have worked with the St Johnstone Community Trust for a long time now, starting with Atholl Henderson. It has been a great time. 'A big thank you goes to everyone at the trust and to all the kids and parents who I have had the pleasure of dealing with over the years.' Griffin's career included spells with Dundee United, Stockport County and Livingston before finishing his playing days at Arbroath. He made his Northern Ireland debut against Germany aged 18 in 1996 and also scored a famous winner against the Republic of Ireland at Lansdowne Road in 1999. He is among the players featured in a new mural celebrating Northern Ireland's top players throughout its footballing history. Situated in Battenburg Street off the Shankill Road, the mural features 14 of the region's most acclaimed players, including another former Saints player, George O'Boyle. Funds towards the artwork were gathered by Northern Ireland football supporters' clubs across the Greater Shankill area.

'He's older than me and supports United — he showed me the way to start watching the Premier League and the need to support United. We could only watch the Premier League at my grandma's house, so we organised to go every weekend. He said: 'One of the directors at Coritiba said a director from United had asked about me. 'I was so excited, imagining a dream when I go to United — but after that the conversations stopped. 'But I think this was the start of my journey. Playing against United was a dream. Wow!' And part of the move is down to manager Amorim who Cunha admitted helped convince him to make the switch. He said: "I have a lot of faith in him. I hope he succeeds in conquering the world like he did in Portugal. "I'm here to help the team and help him. All our discussions made my decision easier." Advertisement There have been flashpoints during his 2½ seasons at Molineux — which started with a five-month loan spell in January 2023 — but now is the time to relax, knowing he has realised his ambition. He added: 'It's the perfect time to come here and now I need to be calm. I've learned from my mistakes. 'There is not one player who does not come here and think about the glory days, all the times they won the Premier League. 'I want to put this club on top and do everything to help them conquer these things.'
