Michelle Obama praises Barack Obama's parenting despite the 'grandeur' of his job

Former first lady Michelle Obama shared it took a special effort to remain down-to-earth while parenting in the White House during her podcast on Wednesday. "And it took a mighty effort to leave the grandeur at the door and to just be there and talk about fifth grade," Obama said in a conversation with Bruce Springsteen on the latest episode of her podcast "IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson," which she co-hosts with her brother. Michelle Obama praised her husband, former President Barack Obama, for being a good parent despite the "grandeur" of his job. "I think Barack is just like you as a tremendous father, doing it in a lot of grandeur, right," Obama told Springsteen. "Yeah, you're the commander in chief of the United States of America. And so finding that balance of, you know, when you've got the nuclear code in your grasp and world leaders calling you and big, important, heavy decisions coming at you every day and valets and aides and on and on, and security, and oh, it's just all grandeur." She added that it was "important" that both she and her husband were present to their daughters, Sasha, who recently turned 24, and Malia, 26. "Trying to wipe all that stuff away and leave it at the door before he would enter the residence of the White House to sit at a dinner table with his two daughters and only talk about them. It was important for both of us, for me and Barack, to carve out that time in those eight years when our girls were in their formative years, you know," Obama said. Springsteen, who recently released a six-track digital extended play (EP) which included songs that were critical of President Donald Trump's administration, agreed with Obama that it can be a challenge to stay grounded. "Even in my job, you know, it's like, hey, you're on the road, you are the king," Springsteen said. "You go home, hey you're the chauffeur. You know, making that transition can be funny, you know, and everybody has some version of that, that you need to transition into your domestic life and to be able to transition into their domestic life, and to understand who you are there and to identify."

Oscar winner Zoe Saldaña on Pixar's first Mexican-Dominican animated lead in ‘Elio': ‘The future of America are Latinos'

Walking her first red carpet since her historic Oscar win — just a few miles from ongoing ICE raids in Downtown Los Angeles — Zoe Saldaña shared a timely and personal message at the premiere of Pixar's latest animated feature, Elio. "I do believe that the future of America are Latinos, and people of color," Saldaña, who made history recently as the first Dominican-American to win an Academy Award, told Gold Derby. "I just think that as long as we keep being who we are and coming from a place of love and dignity and hard work we will win." Elio is also, notably, Pixar's first Mexican-Dominican lead character. Brad Garrett, who voices the film's villain Lord Grigon, said he felt like the events taking place in Los Angeles really hit home. "Being a native Californian who grew up in this area, I love that [Elio] is about a Latino family," he explained. "I think we need that now more than ever." Photo byfor Disney/Pixar The film was originally slated for release in the spring 2024. "It's so funny that it was delayed up until this very week,' Jameela Jamil, who plays Ambassador Questa, told Gold Derby, adding that what was previously a setback turned out to be perfect timing. "Politicians and media around the world are trying to make us feel powerless by design, and this film reminds you of individual power and the power of community." Domee Shi (Turning Red) who co-directed with Madeline Sharafian (Burrow) and Adrian Molina (Coco), outlined her hopes for Elio's impact with Gold Derby: "To be able to inspire kids and adults to reach out to their fellow human, to make a connection, to empathize with beings that don't look like them or speak the same language as them but deep down they also have a beating heart. I'm really proud that our movie shows a space that's aspirational, that could be what humanity could be one day, where all of these creatures from all over the galaxy and universe can come together and exchange ideas and technology and live in peace." Idealistic, perhaps, but the power and sway of cinema is not to be underestimated. Overall, Saldaña expressed a positive outlook, as well as offering this future forecasting: "Every empire meets its demise," she said. "We're witnessing a very big bang before the light truly comes in." "We have to embrace other cultures," Garrett said. "And hopefully the aliens will land on the White House. Now is a good time." Brooke Shields' Podcast on Meghan Markle Was Deleted by King Charles' Goddaughter

Today in awkward news, Brooke Shields' recent podcast episode—where she had a lot to say about Meghan Markle—was surreptitiously deleted from the internet. And please be advised that this wasn't just any podcast. It was hosted by India Hicks, who happens to be the goddaughter of King Charles. I'll give you a moment. Per People, Brooke reflected on a SXSW panel she and Meghan did together back in March 2024, which was called "Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen." Apparently, Meghan spoke about writing to Procter & Gamble at age 11 about gender equality—which Brooke found "serious" and "precious." "Katie asks the first question to Meghan and she talks about how at a young age, she was already advocating for women," Brooke said on the podcast. "She starts telling a story about how when she was 11–and she keeps saying, 'Well, when I was 11, I saw this commercial and they were talking about how washing dishes was for women. And she said, 'I didn't think only women wash dishes. It wasn't fair. So I wrote to the company.' She kept saying she was 11! She wrote to the company, they changed the text, they changed the commercial. It was just too precious, and I was like, they're not going to want to sit here for 45 minutes and listen to anybody be precious or serious." I like a totally normal and on-topic story for the event. But Brooke then recalled interrupting Meghan: "I go, 'Excuse me, I'm so sorry, I've got to interrupt you there for one minute.' I was trying not to be rude, but I wanted to be funny because it was so serious. I just want to give everybody here a context as to how we're different. When I was 11, I was playing a prostitute.'" She then claimed their talk became "more relaxed" as a result of the joke. Meanwhile, India doesn't appear to have explained why Brooke's episode was deleted, but People notes that a link to it leads to a "page not found" message.
