Big brokerage firms tipped to have pocketed decent earnings in 2024

Korea Herald27-01-2025

South Korea's major brokerage houses are expected to have racked up decent earnings last year on the back of increased trading of overseas stocks, industry sources said Monday.
According to the data from market tracker FnGuide, the combined operating income of the country's big five brokerage houses in 2024 is estimated at 5.66 trillion won ($3.94 billion), sharply up from the previous year's 3.37 trillion won.
Korea Investment & Securities is expected to have posted the biggest operating income of 1.27 trillion won, followed by Samsung Securities with 1.19 trillion won, Mirae Asset & Securities 1.15 trillion won, Kiwoom Securities 1.23 trillion won and NH Investment & Securities 923 billion won, the data showed.
Their stellar performances were partly driven by commission fees from increased trading of overseas stocks by retail investors.
The average daily turnover of the local stock market stood at 19.1 trillion won last year, up 2 percent from a year earlier, while that for overseas stocks by Koreans jumped 84 percent on-year to $53.1 billion.
Also, local securities firms took less reserve last year than a year earlier against exposure to risky construction development projects, helping jack up their bottom lines.
This year, their performances are widely expected to improve further on the back of expected monetary easing cycles and reduced risks against shaky construction projects. (Yonhap)

Sands China eyes growing Korean market with opening of Londoner Grand in Macao

Sands China, a Macao-based developer, owner and operator of integrated resorts and casinos, is preparing for the June 8 opening of its newly refurbished Londoner Grand, a key component of the company's ongoing $1.2 billion transformation of the integrated resort The Londoner Macao. The revamped property aims to appeal to the growing number of premium Korean travelers visiting Macao. In an exclusive interview with The Korea Herald ahead of a showcase event in Seoul on Thursday, Wilfred Wong, executive vice chairperson of Sands China, discussed the company's focus on the Korean market, which has seen rapid growth in recent years. Wong emphasized that Sands China is committed to offering a more tailored experience for Korean guests, who increasingly seek integrated and luxury travel offerings. 'We look at Korea as a very strong market. And if you look at the visitor number in the first quarter, Korean visitors' growth rate is over 30 percent (on-year),' Wong said. 'That's why we have always put a lot of emphasis on the Korean market.' The Londoner Grand is a focal point for Sands China's efforts to cater to Korean visitors, he added. In addition to Korean-speaking concierge staff, the property also features specialized dining options designed to appeal to Korean tastes. The newly introduced North Palace restaurant, an upgraded version of the popular North in The Venetian Macao, serves Northern Chinese cuisine, a favorite of Korean guests. 'Koreans have a very strong taste. That's why North is one of their favorites. With North Palace, we've made it bigger, more beautiful, with a variety of dishes like Peking duck and roast lamb,' Wong said. As the company sees growing demand from high-value travelers, the property's newly designed rooms and suites reflect Sands China's strategy to provide premium accommodations. With 2,405 rooms across 18 different types, the Londoner Grand aims to deliver a curated and exclusive experience for guests seeking personalized luxury. 'We have ultraluxury room types for the really big spenders, along with family rooms and suites. It's a more refined offering compared to what we had before,' Wong explained. Wong also noted what makes Macao an appealing destination for Korean tourists. The city's compact size allows visitors to explore historical sites and modern attractions within a short distance, making it convenient for travelers who want to maximize their time. 'Macao offers different experiences within a small area. In Seoul, I travel for an hour or more to get to places, but in Macao, anything beyond a 20-minute car ride is far,' Wong said. The Londoner Grand provide a one-stop experience with shopping, dining and entertainment all within one property, he noted, adding that convenience is increasingly attractive to younger Korean travelers, who want everything in one place. Also to align the growing global demand for responsible tourism, Wong said, the company has made significant strides in incorporating eco-friendly practices, such as energy-saving initiatives and waste reduction programs. Sands China has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices and earned a top 1 percent ranking in the 2024 S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook. Looking ahead, Wong is optimistic about the future of the Londoner Grand as a world-class destination for premium travelers, particularly as Sands China continues to cater to evolving guest preferences. 'Our vision is simple: to offer world-class experiences that travelers will remember and return for,' Wong said.

What OpenAI's expansion to Korea means for market?

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has officially established a Korean subsidiary, marking a significant step in its expansion into the Korean market. The move comes after earlier regional entries in Tokyo and Singapore, underlining Asia's growing importance in the company's global strategy. OpenAI's approach goes far beyond simply opening subsidiaries, according to industry sources on Friday. In each country, the firm is implementing a multilayered strategy that includes developing localized artificial intelligence models, forging enterprise partnerships, aligning with public policy and investing in digital infrastructure. Sources say there are compelling reasons for OpenAI's arrival in Korea. The nation continues to rank among the global leaders in key technological and societal metrics related to AI. The 2025 AI index report published by Stanford University's Institute for Human-Centered AI showed that Korea topped the world in AI patent applications per 100,000 people. As of 2023, Korea filed 17.3 AI patents per 100,000 people — surpassing Luxembourg (15.3), China (6.1) and the US (5.2). Korea also ranks high in AI receptiveness. The same report cited global surveys indicating that Koreans, along with people in China, Indonesia and Thailand, exhibit a particularly positive perception of AI. The environment fosters early commercialization, smoother beta testing and rapid user adoption of AI-based services. 'Korea is not merely a technology adopter,' said an industry source who requested anonymity. 'It is a proven test bed where global AI strategies can be executed and scaled. The new Seoul office should be seen not just as a local outpost, but as a strategic pivot point.' OpenAI's anticipated roles in Korea include: enhancing GPT models with Korean language optimization, deploying ChatGPT Enterprise for domestic corporations and public institutions, establishing research hubs in collaboration with academia and industry, recruiting and training local AI talent and engaging in policy and infrastructure partnerships. Of particular interest is the potential for deeper cooperation with the Korean government. Through initiatives like "OpenAI for Countries," the company may explore building AI data centers and testing infrastructure within Korea. OpenAI's Korean entry also raises questions about its possible impact on the local search engine landscape. With last year's debut of ChatGPT Search — a service that blends chatbot capabilities with real-time information retrieval — OpenAI has begun nudging into territory long dominated by domestic platforms. As of Wednesday, according to Internet Trend, Naver held 57.41 percent of Korea's search market, followed by Google at 34.45 percent and Microsoft Bing at 3.98 percent. However, this marks a notable decline from Naver's nearly 80 percent market share in 2015. Despite the shifting landscape, Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon expressed confidence during the company's first quarter earnings call earlier this month, saying that 'there has been no negative traffic impact from generative AI services.' Instead of competing on raw market share, Naver is focusing on increasing user engagement through AI-powered features like 'AI Briefing,' launched in March. The tool summarizes search results and provides source citations in response to user queries. OpenAI, for its part, appears unbothered by the speculation. When asked if it now considers itself a 'search platform,' the firm's official responded with a smile, emphasizing that 'we're not here to target any specific portal's market share — it's simply a global trend unfolding.'

Seoul shares rise to 3-month high on tech gains, US rallies

South Korean stocks finished markedly higher to hit a three-month high Wednesday, driven by gains in tech shares, as the United States' temporary pause on tariffs against the European Union boosted investor appetite for risky assets. The local currency fell against the US dollar. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index added 32.93 points, or 1.25 percent, to close at 2,670.15. It marked the highest level since Feb. 19, when the index finished at 2,671.52. Trade volume was moderate at 403.25 million shares worth 11.16 trillion won ($8.11 billion), with winners beating losers 579 to 308. Institutions and foreign investors bought a net 742.55 billion won and 303.47 billion won worth of stocks, respectively, while individuals sold 990.77 billion won worth of shares. The index opened higher, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street, and extended gains further as investors welcomed news that US President Donald Trump said he would delay imposing 50 percent tariffs on imports from the EU until July 9. On Tuesday (US time), the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 1.78 percent, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite soared 2.47 percent. "Market conditions have improved recently, but the rebound in such oversold sectors as semiconductors and batteries has been limited amid lingering uncertainties regarding US tariffs and other issues," said Kim Soo-yeon, a researcher at Hanwha Investment & Securities. "Determining when to increase market exposure will be a crucial issue for investors for the remainder of the year," she added. Tech shares led the upturn of the index. Market bellwether Samsung Electronics surged 3.71 percent to 55,900 won, and its rival SK hynix soared 2.72 percent to 208,000 won. Major battery maker LG Energy Solution spiked 6.06 percent to 289,000 won, while No. 2 battery maker Samsung SDI jumped 8.68 percent to 174,100 won. Top carmaker Hyundai Motor climbed 2.2 percent to 185,900 won, and its sister Kia Motors went up 0.91 percent to 89,000 won. Leading biotech firm Samsung Biologics edged up 0.19 percent to 1.03 million won, and Celltrion rose 0.26 percent to 156,000 won. No. 1 steelmaker POSCO Holdings advanced 5.27 percent to 249,500 won, while top online portal operator Naver gained 2.12 percent to 187,700 won. But defense giant Hanwha Aerospace sank 6.2 percent to 832,000 won, while leading financial firm KB Financial lost 0.88 percent to 101,000 won. The local currency was quoted at 1,376.5 won against the greenback at 3:30 p.m., down 7 won from the previous session. (Yonhap)
