Authorities make horrifying discovery after inspecting suspicious package at US mail facility — here's what they found

U.S. authorities uncovered a disturbing wildlife smuggling organization inside a Southern California mail facility. According to reports by CBS News, Sai Keung Tin, a smuggler from Hong Kong, was arrested for illegally exporting a protected turtle species.
Federal authorities seized Tin at John F. Kennedy Airport for aiding and abetting turtle smuggling across the U.S. He was part of an international smuggling organization that trafficked the eastern box turtle, a protected species native to the U.S.
Under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, it is illegal to smuggle the eastern box turtle across international borders. The turtles were smuggled in boxes that claimed to be transporting almonds and chocolate cookies. Eight to 12 turtles were squished into each box and bound by socks to prevent movement. One of the turtles died, reported CBS News.
After pleading guilty to four federal charges of exporting merchandise against the law, Tin was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison.
Wildlife trafficking is not only life-threatening for the animals being smuggled but also harmful to the entire ecosystem. As this incident highlights, many illegally smuggled animals do not survive the transport because they are forced into horrible conditions.
If they do survive and are then introduced into an area they are not native to, these animals become an invasive species and can disrupt the local ecosystem. Invasive species destroy the ecological balance by competing with local flora and fauna for resources.
Organizations across the globe are actively trying to stop wildlife tracking. One of the organizations is the World Wildlife Fund, which works to spread awareness of illegal wildlife trafficking and raise money to stop it.
Some large corporations and airlines are taking a stance against wildlife smuggling by refusing to transport hunting trophies of certain species. Emirates, for example, will not transport hunting trophies from elephants, rhinos, lions, and tigers, even in cases where hunting these animals is legal.
Should the U.S. government ban all products tested on animals?

Four detainees escape from migrant facility in New Jersey

Four people being held at an immigration facility in Newark, New Jersey, have escaped, according to the US Department of Homeland Security. A department spokesperson told the BBC that four detainees have gotten out of the Delaney Hall Detention Facility and "additional law enforcement partners" are helping search for them. Their identites have not been released and details of the escapes are unclear. There were reports on Thursday of unrest within the facility, where crowds of protesters have been gathering and the local mayor and congresswoman were recently arrested. Lawyers for detainees said that a group of migrants inside had started a revolt over a lack of food and other poor conditions. The detention centre had then gone into a lockdown, the lawyers told US media. One woman whose husband was being held at Delaney Hall told the BBC's US partner CBS News that a fight began at lunch because people had not been fed in 20 hours. "He said they were breaking things, just trying to get anybody's attention, because they are constantly ignored," the wife told CBS. "I asked my husband what was his role and part in it, and he said, 'I'm hiding. I'm scared for my life.'" Meanwhile, outside of the facility on Thursday night protesters pushed against barricades as vehicles came through the gates. The Bronx Defenders legal group told the BBC that all legal visits with migrants held at Delaney Hall - including phone calls and virtual meetings - had been suspended until further notice. Karla Ostolaza, managing director of the group's immigration practice, said lawyers had not been able to contact their clients on Friday and that she had reached out to immigration officials to check on clients' safety, but not heard back. Delaney Hall is owned by the private prison company, GEO Group, which has a $1b (£735m) contract with the Trump administration to use the 1,000-bed facility as an immigration centre. As President Donald Trump ramps up his immigration crackdown, the centre has attracted the attention of locals who say the government should be more forthcoming about how those being held there are treated. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement: "We are concerned about reports of what has transpired at Delaney Hall this evening, ranging from withholding food and poor treatment, to uprising and escaped detainees". Democratic Congresswoman LaMonica McIver said her office was "carefully monitoring" the situation, saying she had also heard reports of "abusive circumstances at the facility". Baraka was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers after a scuffle at Delaney Hall on 9 May, but a federal judge dismissed the case. McIver was arrested and charged over her involvement in the incident. She denies wrongdoing and both say they had visited the facility in an attempt to enter and review conditions there. The unrest at Delaney Hall comes as Trump has deployed thousands of National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles during protests against his crackdown. Nearly 400 people have been arrested in LA since protests began a week ago. Appeals court temporarily allows Trump to keep National Guard in LA US congresswoman indicted by grand jury over immigration centre scuffle

The discovery came 'after an extensive multi-agency search," the release noted. Officials added, 'It was reported a recreational fisherman discovered the 30-foot white-hulled vessel while trolling near the search area on Wednesday.' 'Coast Guard Cutter William Sparling (WPC-1154) arrived on scene within 30 minutes,' the statement continued. 'Divers from the Massachusetts Environmental Police (MEP) and Massachusetts State Police (MSP) were also on scene. It was reported that MEP and MSP identified the vessel as the Seahorse and found two people onboard, presumably deceased. The next of kin were notified.' The statement did not identify Arsenault and Daley. Speaking to 7NEWS, Arsenault's brother, Paul, remembered his brother as a proud father with decades of fishing experience. 'He ran boats all his life,' he said. "He just loved being on the water," he told wcvb5. "He loved the excitement. He loved being his own boss. He loved being a captain." The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England said in a statement on Facebook that the boat, F/V Seahorse, 'was known to be fishing in the vicinity of Target Ship Wreck near Eastham in the Cape Cod Bay.' Following the update in the case, the sector wrote, "The FV SEAHORSE and all individuals onboard have been located. Thank you for the search efforts from both the community and partner agencies within the Cape Cod Mutual Response System that assisted with the search. We are deeply moved by the efforts of recreational boaters and the Fishing Partnership." "Our hearts go out to the families of the individuals onboard," they added.
