Housewife loses over RM500,000 to investment scam
GEORGE TOWN: A housewife lost RM521,450 after falling victim to a fraudulent investment scheme conducted face-to-face in Seberang Perai Utara (SPU), near here, recently.
Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the Commercial Crime Investigation Division from the SPU Police Headquarters received a report from the 57-year-old woman on Tuesday (June 10), with investigations underway.
"Based on investigations, the victim was introduced by her neighbour to the scheme, which promised high returns in a short period in 2022, before introducing the victim to another woman who posed as a marketing officer," he said in a statement on Wednesday (June 11), adding that the woman explained to the victim how the investment worked.
He said the victim then joined the investment and made 51 cash transactions into five different bank accounts from March 4, 2022 to Jan 22, 2024 totalling RM521,450, before realising she had been scammed after the suspect kept giving excuses whenever she wanted to withdraw her profits.
Hamzah said that some of the excuses given were that the investments had not reached their maturity dates and that there was no need to worry because her capital was safely stored at Bank Negara.
He said the victim was also instructed to make various additional payments, including those to Bank Negara and legal fees, to facilitate the recovery of her capital and profits.
"Investigations are ongoing, including tracing those involved in the scam, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating," he added. – Bernama

PETALING JAYA: Bank Negara has announced the full rollout of the qualified resident investor (QRI) programme for eligible corporates, effective July 1 as part of efforts to promote two-way flows in the onshore foreign exchange market. In a statement yesterday, the central bank said the rollout builds on the success of the pilot programme, which was introduced in April 2024. Since its inception, the QRI programme has generated cumulative inflows from participants exceeding US$1bil into the domestic financial market. The QRI programme allows eligible resident corporates to enjoy greater flexibility in managing their future direct investments abroad without needing prior approval from Bank Negara. To participate, corporates are required to complete a one-time registration with Bank Negara. Upon successful registration, these corporates must repatriate and convert eligible foreign currency funds into ringgit in order to benefit from the programme's flexibilities. Eligible corporates include all resident companies that repatriate and convert foreign currency proceeds from their overseas investments, and that demonstrate good corporate governance as well as compliance with Bank Negara's foreign exchange policy. The QRI programme will be available until June 30, 2028.

Manjung district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Hasbullah Abd Rahman, said the investigations are being conducted under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. He said the investigation was launched following a report lodged at the Manjung district police headquarters at 4.40pm yesterday regarding a Facebook post by an account under the name 'Khalid Yunus'. "The account published an offensive message about the UPSI students involved in the recent road tragedy. "We advise the public not to upload any content that may cause unease or disrupt public order," he said in a statement today. Earlier, it was reported that the Perak State Education Department had directed the district education office to prepare a full report on the teacher's social media post. Perak state executive councillor for education, higher learning, youth and sports Khairudin Abu Hanipah was quoted as saying that investigations found the Facebook account to belong to a teacher serving at a secondary school in the state. The teacher sparked controversy after posting an offensive remark that went viral and caused distress to the victims' families. On Monday, a bus carrying 42 UPSI students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza at KM53 of the East-West Highway in Gerik. Thirteen died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The driver, his attendant, the other UPSI students, and a family of four travelling in the Alza sustained various injuries. ends

Court acquits chicken seller charged with assaulting man with golf club in Bau

Judge Iris Awen Jon made the ruling after finding that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against Abdul Malek Faisal Kamil, 38, at the end of the prosecution's case. Abdul Malek, who sells live chickens, was charged with intentionally causing grievous hurt to a now 28-year-old man in Kampung Bidi, Krokong, Bau at around 10am on Sept 25, 2022. The charge was framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which provides imprisonment for up to 20 years and may also include a fine or whipping, upon conviction. It was understood that during the incident, the victim was waiting for a friend – also a witness in the case – when he was approached by three unidentified men. One of the men reportedly struck the victim with a golf club, resulting in a skull fracture and internal brain bleeding that required surgery on Sept 27, 2022. During the trial, Abdul Malek's counsel Arthur Liang Dawat argued that the reliability of the identification made by the victim, as well as another eyewitness, was highly questionable. He contended that their testimonies were unclear and inconsistent, thereby casting serious doubt on the accuracy of the identification. The lawyer further submitted that the identity of the individual who actually struck the victim with the golf club remained uncertain. A total of six prosecution witnesses were called to testify during the trial.
