US Visa Appointment Delays Leave City Residents in Limbo

Time of India17-05-2025

Hyderabad: Planning a trip to the United States for leisure or work? Be prepared to wait—possibly for over a year. Applicants across Indian metros are facing unprecedented delays in securing appointment slots for B1/B2 (business and tourist) visas, with wait times stretching from several months to more than 13 months in some cities.
In Hyderabad, the earliest available appointment is 7.5 months away. Delhi and Mumbai fare worse, with average wait times of 9 and 9.5 months respectively. Chennai tops the list with a staggering delay of 13.5 months—crossing the one-year mark. "I was hoping to travel to the US for my nephew's wedding in August but the earliest date I'm getting is next March," said a homemaker. "It's heartbreaking. We've planned the trip for months, and now everything's up in the air.
" For business travellers, the delay is proving to be more than just inconvenient—it's becoming a financial hurdle.
"I had multiple conferences lined up this year, but I have already had to cancel two," said an entrepreneur from the city. "What's frustrating is the complete lack of clarity. You keep checking the website, but it's like a game of chance."
While students and emergency travelers are given limited priority slots, the general applicants looking to visit family, attend events, or explore travel opportunities are left stranded.

The prolonged wait times are also affecting those with urgent personal reasons to travel. "My daughter is giving birth in October, and I was hoping to be there for her," said 65-year-old, from Sindhi Colony. "But the next date is in February. I don't understand why it's taking so long."
With summer travel plans already on hold for many, there is growing frustration among applicants who say they feel stuck with no clear solution in sight.
"This is usually the time students are given priority. Until appointment timelines improve, we can only wait, and keep refreshing the portals," said Faheem Sheikh, chairman, Travel Agents Federation of India (AP and Telangana).

Archana Puran Singh's son orders palak paneer in Swiss restaurant, ice-cold glacier water reminds Parmeet Sethi of Mumbai

Archana Puran Singh and her husband Parmeet Sethi, who've developed quite a devoted following on YouTube, are currently posting videos of their trip to Switzerland with their two sons, Ayushmaan and Aryamann. After sharing videos of their business class flight to the popular tourist destination, and then vlogging about their paragliding adventures, the family spent a day doing several adventure sports in the town of Lucerne. They will soon head to Zurich for more fun. After having spent a few days in Switzerland, Archana and her family began craving Indian food. They went to a spot named Kaanchi, on the recommendation of someone they knew. Archana's sons, both of whom are big fans of paneer, immediately ordered a portion each of paneer tikka, palak paneer, and chili paneer for the table. Parmeet, the only meat-eater of the family, ordered a mutton dish. Ayushmaan said, 'It's funny how Indian food tastes even better abroad.' Archana added, 'Look at us eating such good Indian food in Switzerland.' The staff all knew Archana, and posed with the entire family for pictures. The family went tobogganing, and also decided to go on a ride through the forest. In this ride, they were harnessed onto a metal rod, which guided them through the forest. 'This is how we do stunts in the movies,' Archana said. Their fans were happy to see them happy. 'May God bless you with more wealth health and happiness,' one person wrote. Another person commented, 'I think you should make more travel vlogs. Too good!!' Harvard prepares emergency plans as Trump's policies threaten international students

Harvard University is working with global partners such as the University of Chicago and London Business School to safeguard the future of its international students amid tightening US visa rules under Trump-era policies. With international students making up about 27% of its student body, the university is urgently exploring backup plans to ensure educational continuity, according to a report by the Times of India. Visa restrictions raise concerns across campuses The Trump administration has enacted a federal ban on new international student admissions at Harvard, part of a broader immigration crackdown that includes heightened background checks and scrutiny of social media profiles. Students involved in campus protests, particularly those related to the Israel-Hamas conflict, have faced visa revocations and, in some cases, detentions. These measures have alarmed educational institutions across the US, especially since international students contribute around $45 billion annually to the American economy, according to the US Department of Commerce. The largest numbers of students come from China and India. (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) Universities seek global solutions In response, several universities are considering shifting international students to overseas campuses in visa-friendly countries like Qatar. Institutions such as New York University, Northeastern, and Hult International Business School have global branches and are exploring such transfers. However, differences in tuition fees, academic structures, and credit systems remain major hurdles. At Macalester College in Minneapolis, which has 20% international student enrollment, the administration has launched initiatives to help students stay in the US during the break, including fundraising and internship programs. The National Association of Foreign Student Advisers (NAFSA) has criticized the visa policies, calling them 'an unacceptable assault' on international education. The group warned that the actions have created a climate of fear and confusion on campuses. Long-term impact on US higher education As elite institutions like Harvard respond to the crisis with stopgap measures, concerns grow that international students may begin choosing other countries such as Canada, the UK, or Australia, where immigration policies are perceived as more welcoming. Experts warn that prolonged restrictions could diminish the global reputation of US higher education. Maldives Names Katrina Kaif Global Tourism Ambassador Amid Renewed Ties With India

Last Updated: The timing of the announcement is also crucial as it comes just ahead of the anticipated visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Maldives Maldives has appointed Bollywood superstar Katrina Kaif as its new Global Tourism Ambassador in a significant move aimed at enhancing its tourism appeal. The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), which expressed its excitement about the collaboration with one of the most recognisable faces in the Indian film industry. 'Having Katrina Kaif as our Global Brand Ambassador is a moment of great pride for us," said Thoyyib Mohamed, managing director of MMPRC. 'Her popularity, combined with her influence in the global entertainment industry, will undoubtedly help us attract more visitors from across the world, especially from India." Visit Maldives Unveils Katrina Kaif as Global Brand Ambassador for the Sunny Side of Life. — Visit Maldives (@visitmaldives) June 10, 2025 Speaking about her new role as the Sunny Side of Life's Global Brand Ambassador, Kaif said: 'The Maldives represents the pinnacle of luxury and natural beauty—a place where elegance meets tranquillity. I'm honoured to be chosen as the face of the Sunny Side of Life. This collaboration is about bringing the finest travel experiences to global audiences, and I'm excited to help people around the world discover the unique charm and world-class offerings of this extraordinary destination." Kaif's appointment comes at a pivotal time as the Indian subcontinent remains a key source of tourists for the island nation. The Maldives, known for its crystal-clear waters, luxury resorts, and serene beaches, has long been a favoured destination for Indian travellers and Kaif, with her massive fan base across India and globally, is expected to play a key role in further boosting the Maldives' tourism profile. The situation worsened last year when PM Modi posted a series of photos on social media, showing him snorkelling, strolling on a white-sand beach and lounging in a chair next to turquoise waters in Lakshadweep. As he praised the pristine lesser-known and remote Indian archipelago that the government believes has untapped potential for tourism, his photos stirred a storm in Maldives as some saw the tourism campaign as an attempt to draw visitors away from their country. Three senior Maldives officials reacted to PM Modi's post by calling him names, while many other Maldivians insulted Indian tourists on social media. This led to retaliation by Indian tourists who cancelled their holidays to the Maldives, hitting Male where it hurt the most. Finally, as Muizzu visited India in October, the two nations seemed to finally be resetting their ties. India has extended a $50 million treasury‐bill rollover interest‑free to support Maldives' fiscal reforms and help address its debt pressures, re‑affirming its 'Neighbourhood First" policy.
