Microplastics may be stoking antibiotic resistance: Study
The microscopic shards of plastic found in every corner of the planet may be exacerbating antibiotic resistance, a new study has found.
Bacteria exposed to these ubiquitous fragments, known as 'microplastics,' became resistant to multiple types of antibiotics commonly used to treat infections, researchers showed in the study, published on Tuesday in Applied and Environmental Microbiology.
The authors expressed alarm about their discovery, particularly for people living in high-density, low-income places like refugee settlements, where plastic piles up and bacterial infections spread with ease.
'The fact that there are microplastics all around us, and even more so in impoverished places where sanitation may be limited, is a striking part of this observation,' said senior author Muhammad Zaman, a professor of biomedical engineering at Boston University, in a statement.
The possibly greater risk among residents of disadvantaged communities 'underscores the need for more vigilance' and research into microplastic and bacterial interactions, Zaman added.
About 4.95 million people worldwide die from antimicrobial-resistant infections each year, Zaman and his colleagues noted. Meanwhile, they explained bacteria develop resistance not only due to the misuse of medications, but also via the microscopic environments that surround them.
As such, the researchers decided to test how a common bacterium, E. coli, would respond to being in a closed environment with microplastics.
Ultimately, they found that the plastics provided a surface to which the bacteria could attach and colonize, said lead author Neila Gross, a Boston University Ph.D. candidate, in a statement.
Once attached, the bacteria created a biofilm: a sticky material that protects microbes from invaders and keeps them fixed to the surface, Gross explained.
The microplastics, she continued, ended up supercharging the biofilms so much that when the scientists added in antibiotics, the medicine was unable to penetrate the shield.
'We found that the biofilms on microplastics, compared to other surfaces like glass, are much stronger and thicker, like a house with a ton of insulation,' Gross said.
Even when the researchers tested different combinations of antibiotics and types of plastic material, they found that their results were consistent.
'The presence of plastics is doing a whole lot more than just providing a surface for the bacteria to stick — they are actually leading to the development of resistant organisms,' Zaman added.
Going forward, the researchers said they plan to determine whether their findings would apply not just to the laboratory setting, but to the real world as well. For example, they voiced an interest in exploring whether microplastic-related antibiotic resistance is affecting refugee camps overseas.
The authors also expressed their intentions to decipher the precise mechanisms that enable bacteria to maintain such a strong grasp on plastics.
Gross hypothesized that the water-repellant properties of plastics might be allowing bacteria to attach themselves, but that over time, the materials could be taking in moisture and absorbing the antibiotics before they could reach the bacteria.
Regardless of the way this resistance develops, Zaman focused on the notion that microplastic prevalence might be further endangering already underfunded health systems that serve refugee populations.
'Too often, these issues are viewed from a lens of politics or international relations or immigration, and all of those are important, but the story that is often missing is the basic science,' he said. 'We hope that this paper can get more scientists, engineers, and more researchers to think about these questions.'

Salmonella recall of 20 million eggs from Walmart, Safeway, Ralphs, among others
Another salmonella outbreak caused the recall of 1.7 million dozen eggs — meaning roughly more than 20 million less eggs to fry — and has sickened people in seven states. The aforementioned eggs were distributed to Walmart, Safeway, chains owned by Kroger and various other independent and chain supermarkets. Hilmar, California's August Egg Company, a division of Gemperle Enterprises, produced the eggs and issued the recall Friday. Patient records go digital to 'co-ordinate care'
All patient records at a hospital are to go digital as part of a major step "in modernising patient care". The new Electronic Patient Record (EPR) will be switched on at Northampton General Hospital (NGH) from Saturday 28 June. It has been developed by the software system Nervecentre, and is designed to bring all patient notes and information into "one single, secure digital format". William Monaghan, from NGH, described it as a "pivotal moment" and said he hoped it would mean "safer and more co-ordinated care". A hospital spokesperson said the electronic system would "enable clinical teams to access real-time information about a patient's care, helping them make quicker, safer and better-informed decisions". Patient records are currently stored in a combination of paper files and digital systems, but will be replaced by "a central, streamlined platform that enhances efficiency and reduces duplication". Mr Monaghan, group chief digital information officer, said: "This is a pivotal moment for NGH and our patients. "The new EPR system puts essential information at our clinical teams' fingertips, helping them deliver safer, more co-ordinated care. "While there may be a few teething problems as we go live, this investment in digital infrastructure will transform how we work, giving our teams more time to focus on what matters most: caring for patients." The hospital said staff would be using secure, hospital-owned mobile devices, like tablets and iPhones, at patients' bedsides. It means staff will be able to view the latest medical information instantly, spend less time on administration, avoid asking patients to repeat their history many times - and improve co-ordination between departments and services. Engineers unveil radical new freight system that could make diesel trucks obsolete: 'Almost like a mini-airline'
A team of engineers from the University of New South Wales is developing a fleet of drones that can deliver vital supplies to remote areas of Australia. The all-electric fleet would produce zero emissions and be a game-changer for both the population of these remote areas and the environment at large. Countries like Australia have vast swaths of remote land. The population of these remote areas depends on diesel trucks for the delivery of vital materials such as food and medicine. But the emissions from those long deliveries can be detrimental to both the environment and the humans they are serving. Diesel trucks are one of the largest sources of emissions around the globe, contributing to human respiratory illnesses such as asthma and lung disease. They are also detrimental to the environment, as they can degrade crops and soil as well as produce acid rain. To top it all off, they contribute mightily to warming temperatures around the globe. The project is a collaboration between a company called Seaflight Technologies and Macquarie University. Together, they are developing the AURA-E, an electric drone designed for long-range, heavy cargo transport. The ultimate goal of the program is to create a drone that can carry 440-660 pounds over hundreds of kilometers. The leaders of the program believe its benefits will go beyond efficiency and being better for the environment. It should also be a significant source of job growth in the region. This is because the operation of a fleet of drones will require a new generation of aviation professionals and entrepreneurs. With that in mind, the government of Australia awarded the development team half of the program's $3 million budget. This is only the latest use of drone technology to benefit the environment. It has also been used to locate abandoned oil and gas wells. And they are increasingly being deployed to fight deadly and destructive wildfires before they can spread out of control. The heads of the program have big ideas about its potential scope. "If you imagine drones as being almost like a mini-airline, you could have hundreds or even thousands of flights per day," said Graham Doig, the founder of Seaflight Technologies.
