Jacksonville State Football Preview 2025: The Gamecocks Are Starting From Scratch

Miami Herald20-05-2025

Jacksonville State was supposed to struggle when it made the move up from the FCS ranks two years ago.Rich Rodriguez and his offense would be good, the team would have a few moments, and in the end, it would take a little while to start winning. And then a funny thing happened on the way to the whole getting-up-to-speed thing …The offense was wonderful, the team won nine games in each of the first two seasons, took down the Conference USA title last year, and boom. RichRod parlayed that into a return to West Virginia, where he made his big name as a head coach.
But this year, Jacksonville State really might have some work to do. Few teams in America lost as much talent as Jax State did.Charles Kelly is a 57-year-old career assistant who's back after serving as a key assistant in the 1990s, and he's all but starting from scratch at his first head coaching gig with a team that's just this side of depleted. There's a shot the defending Conference USA champ will rise up and rock in a mediocre conference, but unlike a few years ago, a little patience is a must.
Jacksonville State Gamecocks Preview 2025: Offense
X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN- Jacksonville State will still try cranking up the high-powered attack, but it'll do it in a different way. Gone is the RichRod attack that ripped it up with the running game, and in comes the passing attack that brings a little more pace under former Georgia Southern coordinator Clint Trickett.- The quarterbacks are coming in through the portal to run the passing game. Gavin Wimsatt started out at Rutgers, went to Kentucky last year and saw a little time, and now he'll battle for the gig. Cade Cunningham started at Marshall before going to Memphis, but he's inexperienced.
- Top receiver Cam Vaughn left with Rodriguez to West Virginia, but Michael Pettway was second with 25 catches, averaging over 18 yards per grab, and No. 3 man Brock Rechsteiner is back on the outside.- Guard Amare Grayson is the only starter returning to the offensive front, but there's a little bit of experience from last year to step up. The developed depth, though, is non-existent. Again, it'll be a different style, but there will still be a ground game. Andrew Paul ran for four touchdowns, but TCU transfer Cam Cook will likely be the main man coming off 460-yard, nine-score season.
Jacksonville State Gamecocks Preview 2025: Defense
- The defense took a bit of a backseat to the high-powered offense, but it closed strong and was amazing all season at taking the ball away. Former Maryland defensive coordinator Brian Williams takes over. He's a specialist working on … - The defensive line. Star pass rusher J-Rock Swain is gone, but Jawaun Campbell is back on one side, making 47 tackles with two sacks and eight tackles for loss as a freshman. Darrell Prater is a 300-pound starter on the other side, and, fellow 300-pounder is an experienced anchor on the nose.
- Morven Joseph saw time in the linebacking corps on the outside, but Jacob Cruz (Georgia Tech) comes in to work in the middle, and Myles Butler (Campbell) is a safety-side defender on the outside.- The transfer portal loaded up the secondary. Safety Patrick Taylor is the only holdover, but everyone else is likely to be new. Tre'Quon Fegans (UCF) at one safety spot and Tyrin Taylor (Memphis) at corner should quickly become the standouts as their thrown into the fire.
Jacksonville State Gamecocks Key to the Season
Get the passing game going in a hurry. It's not that last year's team didn't throw the ball, but it crushed defenses with the running attack. This year's offense won't run the ball 646 times, and it won't come up with over 3,500 rushing yards, but consistency and efficiency have to show up with the passing, so …
Jacksonville State Gamecocks Key Player
Gavin Wimsatt, QB Sr.Or Cade Cunningham. They're both seniors, but they're both rusty. Cunningham didn't do anything at Marshall or Memphis, and Wimsatt is a dangerous runner who hit 46% of his passes over four years of rotational work with 21 interceptions. Someone has to take the gig right away.
Jacksonville State Gamecocks Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss
Top Transfer In: Cam Cook, RB Jr.There aren't a whole slew of great transfers, but Cook has the talent to be a big statistical star as the No. 1 back. The former TCU runner can catch a little bit, too, and should be used early and often.Top Transfer Out: Fred Perry, S Sr.Several talented former Gamecocks will be missed - safety Zechariah Poyser going to Miami hurts - but Perry was the star of last year's secondary, making 110 tackles, three sacks, ten tackles for loss, and two broken up passes. He's an all-around defender who'll be great in the West Virginia defensive backfield.
Jacksonville State Gamecocks Key Game
at Georgia Southern, Sept. 13It's an interesting game for several reasons. It's a road game that could be a decent measuring stick three weeks in, there's a chance to go on a little run with Murray State up next, and it's offensive coordinator Clint Trickett going against the team that he worked with last year.- 2025 Jacksonville State Schedule Breakdown

Jacksonville State Gamecocks 2025 Season Prediction, Win Total, What Will Happen
It's going to be a little rough. The coaching staff is good, the program is strong, and more good parts are around than it might seem, but this is one massive rebuild.Fortunately, most of the Conference USA teams aren't anything special, and the Gamecocks should be in just about every conference game.
All five road games are winnable, UCF is the only Power Four date, and even though there will be a few ugly moments when nothing works, it won't be a total collapse. It will, however, be a 2025 season to set up 2026.Set The Jacksonville State Gamecocks Win Total At … 4Likely Wins: Murray State50/50 Games: Delaware, at FIU, at Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State, at Middle Tennessee, at Sam Houston, at Southern Miss, at UTEPLikely Losses: Liberty, at UCF, WKU

Rodriguez's one transfer portal period a consensus among Big 12 coaches

West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez was vocal this spring about his problems with the NCAA and the current state of college football. His biggest issue was with the transfer portal, and how there were two openings, with one in the winter and the other in the spring. Rodriguez wants to adopt a professional model, like Bill Belichick's model, with one portal window being like free agency and recruiting being the draft. 'It kind of sucks that we have to do so much roster movement, management, whatever you want to call it in April,' Rodriguez said early this spring. 'I guess I am complaining. It's kind of a new thing in college football. It's not smart. It's not right. It's not organized correctly.' Rodriguez wants one portal period. His argument is that he'll coach a player all spring, and then after he's spent all his time and effort developing the player, he can just jump in the portal and play against him in the fall. 'I mean, how ridiculous is that?' Rodriguez said in March. 'There's another portal thing coming up in a couple of weeks… I wasted all my time coaching this guy, getting him ready, and then he's getting a paycheck to go somewhere else.' Rodriguez isn't the only coach in college football who sees this as an issue. Last week, the Big 12 coaches, athletic directors, and commissioner Brett Yormark met to talk about the current state of the sport and voiced their complaints. Thursday, Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham and Kansas coach Lance Leipold took to the podium, answering questions about what they'd like to see for the future of college football, representing the rest of the Big 12 coaches. The consensus for the portal was that the Big 12 coaches agree with Rodriguez and want one portal period. 'As coaches, we unanimously support one portal window, and that is in January,' Leipold said. 'That's what we'd like.' Currently, there's a portal period in December and another in April, so the January window won't be a plug-and-play option. It won't just replace one of the current windows while getting rid of the other. But, there's reasoning behind why the coaches want January to be when the spring portal falls. 'It's a tough thing with calendars right now and where it goes,' Leipold said ' It's a chance to get your team settled. You're signing most of your guys in December. You're going to know what your roster will be like to start the second semester, and you have the opportunity to work and develop, build those relationships, evaluate your team, and get ready for the next season.' A January portal gets rid of the awkward conversations a player and coach have in December when he's on the roster of a College Football Playoff team making a run for the national championship, and in the middle, the player has to decide to whether to stay for the betterment of the team or leave to better his career. It also removes a coach coaching a player all spring, just for them to leave at the end. It'll be interesting to see how January works, though. The December portal was created because the winter semester ends in early December and starts at the beginning of January. So, players have time to switch schools during the break. The portal in January could get dicey with many schools starting the second semester in early January. The National Championship game for 2026 is scheduled for January 19, which is deep into January, so will it be after? Now, it's almost February at that point. There hasn't been a change, yet, on the portal because of issues like these, but it's known that the Big 12 coaches want it to change, so a switch could be coming in the future. 'I think the people in charge see that you can't have this much roster movement and turnover and change in April and May,' Rodriguez said. 'It's ridiculous.'

Fourth Clemson baseball player enters NCAA transfer portal

Fourth Clemson baseball player enters NCAA transfer portal A fourth member of the Clemson Tigers' 2025 baseball team entered the transfer portal Tuesday following the team's NCAA Tournament exit on Sunday. Freshman pitcher Chayce Kieck joined left-handers Ethan Darden and Jackson Cole and right-hander Luke Brown to enter the portal since the Tigers' season ended with back-to-back losses to West Virginia and Kentucky in the Clemson Regional at Doug Kingsmore Stadium over the weekend. Kieck made nine appearances for the Tigers this past season, posting a 9.75 ERA while logging 12 innings. He allowed 19 hits in that span, walking five batters and striking out 11. The right-hander from The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla., committed to Clemson in July 2022. He last pitched for the Tigers in their May 4 loss at Florida State, allowing five runs on four hits and a walk while recording one out. Clemson finished the 2025 season at 45-18 overall and 18-12 in ACC play. The Tigers reached the ACC Tournament championship game but fell 14-4 to North Carolina. The No. 11 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Tigers gave up four runs in the ninth inning of a 9-6 loss to West Virginia on Saturday and committed seven errors while allowing 13 hits in their season-ending 16-4 loss to Kentucky the following day. Schedule revealed for LSU baseball's super regional series vs. West Virginia

Schedule revealed for LSU baseball's super regional series vs. West Virginia LSU baseball is gearing up for its 17th super regional in program history after the Tigers won a decisive game 7 vs. Little Rock on Monday night to win the Baton Rouge Regional. Little Rock gave LSU all it could handle, but LSU stormed back from a 5-1 deficit for a 10-6 win. Jared Jones put the game on ice with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth. Now, LSU's attention shifts to West Virginia. After earning the No. 6 overall seed, LSU gets to remain in the comfort of Alex Box Stadium. LSU has good luck when the super regional is in Baton Rouge. Not so much when it goes on the road. On Tuesday, the schedule for LSU's meeting with WVU was released. After playing a game 7 on Monday, LSU was likely glad to see the super regional won't begin until Saturday. That will allow LSU's starters to pitch with normal rest. Expect Kade Anderson to start game one after Anthony Eyanson was used out of the bullpen on Monday. Here are the times for the Baton Rouge Super Regional Game 1: 1:00 p.m. CT 1:00 p.m. CT Game 2: 5:00 p.m. CT 5:00 p.m. CT Game 3: TBA For those of you who have grown tired of late-night games, you're in luck this weekend. LSU's first two games drew an earlier start, but weather could always force a change.
