Ultra-swimmer inspired by Thor actor Chris Hemsworth to take on Iceland swim

ITV News15-05-2025

An ultra-swimmer has said he was inspired by actor Chris Hemsworth 's role as Nordic God Thor to take on a mammoth swim around Iceland.
Ross Edgley joked the challenge will be 'the closest thing yet to swimming around Asgard' – the home of Thor – as he plans to swim 1,000 miles around the whole of Iceland in a challenge expected to take three months.
The 39-year-old, from Cheshire, said the idea for his challenge was inspired by Marvel's Thor star Hemsworth, who introduced him to Nordic folklore after they met during the production of Thor: Love And Thunder.
'I was always just full of questions, just saying, 'why are you doing that? Why does Thor do this?' and we just got chatting,' the ultra-swimmer said.
'His (Hemsworth) knowledge of Nordic folklore is amazing. He's like an encyclopaedia of it. We got chatting about that and then he sort of explained (the folklore) to me.'
'I just thought Iceland, which inspired Tolkien and various other Nordic folklore, is the closest thing yet to swimming around Asgard.'
The athlete will begin his journey, named the Great Icelandic Swim, on Friday, where he is expected to face choppy waves, killer whales and temperatures as low as 3C.
His swimming pattern will consist of swimming for six hours and resting for six hours, which will be repeated every day for around three months.
Mr Edgley is no stranger to difficult challenges after he swam more than 1,791 miles in 157 days around the coast of Great Britain and earned a Guinness World Record for the longest distance assisted adventure swim after covering 317 miles along the Yukon River in Canada.
He said the Iceland challenge is likely to be 'twice as hard' despite it being almost 'half the distance of the Great Britain swim' because of the colder temperatures.
'Usually in England, when you get out of a frozen lake, you're running somewhere where there's a hot chocolate and you can get around the fire, but out there it's just Viking countries,' he said.
'The wind chill is a different sort of cold and that was a wake-up call for me.'
The 39-year-old said he is aiming to get 'as fat as possible and as fit as possible' in order to combat the cold temperatures.
'Body fat is insulating, so the more of it you have the more insulated you are… you just kind of want to be almost seal-like,' he explained.
The swim is also being completed in the name of science as he has teamed up with the University of Iceland and the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute of Iceland to take daily water samples.
The samples are designed to help build a picture about the biodiversity around Iceland's coast and help towards researching the environmental DNA (eDNA) in the water.
'It allows us to take an incredible picture of the biodiversity all around Iceland,' Mr Edgley said.
'It would allow us to take eDNA samples all around the coast, so we would be able to map the biodiversity of Iceland in a level of detail that's never been seen before.'
He hopes the public will follow and support his Great Icelandic Swim as he shares updates via social media.
While he acknowledged his followers may tune in to 'see my tongue fall off because of the salt water', he also hopes the challenge will educate people about Iceland's biodiversity.
'Come along, see my tongue fall off, see killer whales and seals… but ultimately, it'll be brilliant to communicate the science as well,' he said.

Chris Evans shares a surprising detail about his very romantic proposal to Alba Baptista

Chris Evans revealed the special skill he learned for the elaborate proposal to his now-wife Alba Baptista. The 43-year-old actor opened up about how he popped the question to his much younger wife, 27, over two years ago. The Marvel star was first romantically linked to the Portuguese actress in 2021, and they tied the knot two years later but never publicly announced their engagement. 'I proposed to my wife in Portuguese,' he told The Knot at the premiere of his steamy, new romantic comedy, Materialists, in New York City on Saturday. 'She's Portuguese, so I learned how to say, "Will you marry me?" in Portuguese. I had practiced it all week.' He said he kept practicing what he would say to her in her native language and almost ruined the proposal. 'I had practiced it so much that while I'd be making breakfast and you almost just start saying it out loud,' he recalled. 'Like, "Oh God, that's not just a song that's stuck in my head! It's gonna let the cat out of the bag."' Fortunately, he said he didn't spoil the surprise before the special moment. 'I got really nervous when it came time to do it,' he said. 'I actually think I screwed it up, but I still know it.' The couple, who share a 16-year age gap, were first romantically linked in 2021 but only publicly debuted their relationship nearly two years later. In early 2023, the actor made their romance Instagram official when he posted a reel of them playing around and trying to scare each other at home. The pair never announced their engagement before tying the knot in the fall of 2023 in Cape Cod. In October 2023, one month after getting married, Evans opened up about their wedding at New York Comic Con. 'It was really, really great. We kinda had two ceremonies,' he recalled before explaining how they got married in both of their hometowns. He said that both ceremonies were 'wonderful and beautiful' before he admitted wedding planning was 'a lot.' 'For those of you who are married, it takes a lot out of you,' he confessed. Now that we're through that, we've just kinda been enjoying life, gearing up for autumn, my favorite season,' he said at the time. 'It's, like, the best time of the year right now,' he added. 'Now we're just relaxing and enjoying life and reflecting.'

The biggest titles announced at Summer Game Fest, PlayStation and Xbox showcases

This week has been a pretty big one for new games, with PlayStation, Xbox and Summer Game Fest each holding their own events to show off some of the biggest upcoming games The showcase season has wrapped up for another year, and it appears we have an exciting year ahead with massive reveals from Marvel, Call of Duty, and Resident Evil. It's fair to say that it's been a jam-packed weekend. While the Fortnite Death Star Sabotage live event dominated for many gamers, and the launch of a new console along with numerous Nintendo Switch 2 day one games kept players thoroughly engaged, there was still much more on the horizon. ‌ The presentation season is in full swing, starting with a PlayStation State of Play livestream, swiftly followed by the Summer Game Fest and an Xbox Games Showcase brimming with games. ‌ There's certainly a lot to digest, and while the usual culprits made their appearances at their respective shows (yes, Fallout 76, we're looking at you – that advert showcasing the best of the Gone Fission update was as predictable as ever), there were some unexpected surprises that made a significant impact. So, what have been the standout reveals of the showcase season so far? Here's every game you need to know about. PlayStation State of Play June 2025 PlayStation started the week with a surprise showcase, not necessarily featuring the games we've been eagerly awaiting, but certainly delivering some that are bound to get gamers buzzing. The event kicked off with an intriguing announcement for Lumines Arise, the latest brainchild from the creators of Tetris Effect. The original game was one that didn't quite click until you gave it a go, and if this new title is anywhere near as immersive as its predecessor, players are in for a deeply engaging experience. It's set to launch this Autumn. Hot on its heels was Romeo is a Dead Man, a mind-bending combat game weaving some seriously bizarre narrative threads that need to be seen to be understood. Next up, the showcase gave us a glimpse into the bleak gameplay of Silent Hill f, slated for release on September 25, 2025. The much-speculated remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics was confirmed to be hitting the shelves in September, while Team Asobi announced that Astro Bot will be getting five additional challenge levels and a new bot for the Ghost of Yotei. ‌ Sword of the Sea, the newest offering from the creators of Journey and Abzu, was given a gameplay and release date trailer, before it was revealed that the game would be available on PS Plus upon its release on Tuesday, August 19. This will be alongside FBC: Firebreak, the original versions of Resident Evil 2 and 3, Twisted Metal 3 and 4, Myst, Riven, and Deus Ex. Before the grand finale of the showcase, we were treated to a sneak peek at the early Bond adventure 007 First Ligh t and the explosive unveiling of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. With its striking Japanese-inspired visuals and vibrant colour palette, it's set to leave an indelible mark on the fighting game scene. All in all, it was quite the spectacle. Summer Game Fest June 2025 ‌ For many, Summer Game Fest 2025 was the disappointment of the showcase season, despite ending on a high note. After an initial glimpse at the Fortnite Death Star Sabotage live event, Sonic Racing Crossworlds announced that Hatsune Miku, Like a Dragon's Ichiban Kasuga and Persona's Joker are set to join as guest racers, along with a significant upcoming Minecraft crossover. Existing franchises took centre stage at this showcase, with the reveal of RTS Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, Nickelodeon releasing a trailer for the forthcoming RPG Nicktoons and the Dice of Destiny, and the announcement of a new Deadpool VR game featuring voice actor Neil Patrick Harris. We also got a preview of Jurassic World Evolution 3, a game poised to enhance its already robust park simulation with a truly comprehensive breeding system. Indie game enthusiasts were in for a surprise with the release of a fresh trailer for Mouse: PI for Hire. However, the real showstopper was the announcement from the Shovel Knight team about its new game, Mina the Hollower, set to launch on October 31, 2025, with a demo available for immediate play. ‌ Additionally, Scott Pilgrim EX, the sequel to the Xbox Arcade classic Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, was unveiled, along with a new roguelite that beautifully echoes 1930s animations called Into the Unwell. The event concluded after hours of reveals, ending on a high note with two major announcements for gamers. A new title from Like a Dragon series creator Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Stranger Than Heaven, was introduced, albeit with limited details. The grand finale of the showcase was the unveiling of a new trailer for Resident Evil Requiem, featuring new lead character Grace Ashcroft embarking on a harrowing mission into the remnants of Raccoon City. The much-anticipated return to the police station is scheduled for 27 February 2026. Absolutely massive. Xbox Games Showcase June 2025 ‌ In addition to The Outer Worlds 2 treats showcased at the end of the event (which included some rather amusing perks), Xbox really delivered some significant announcements during its show. The event began with High on Life 2, a game that caught many by surprise (largely as players didn't expect the franchisification of what was thought to be a one-and-done), before confirming a massive rumour – a new Xbox handheld, the ROG Xbox Ally, is set to launch this year, courtesy of a partnership with ASUS, boasting impressive specs and the revelation that every game displayed during the showcase would be playable anywhere. Immediately following this, we saw the triumphant return of iconic franchises – Super Meat Boy 3D appears both brutal and vibrant, Ninja Gaiden 4 finally received its trailer, and new DLC for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was unveiled. The new RPG Clockwork Revolution seems busy, but if it can deliver on the aesthetics, time travel mechanics and story it's promising, it could become a major hit. Grounded 2 aims to take players back to the park, and There Are No Ghosts at the Grand is an enchanting decoration game that might harbour more secrets than it initially suggests. We've been treated to a fresh glimpse of the visually stunning Invincible VS, Double Fine's latest escapade Keeper, and a renewed look at Gears of War Reloaded – but the final reveal was truly extraordinary. Seemingly a narrative-driven futuristic title, a cinematic preview of a game featuring Milo Ventimiglia and Kiernan Shipka began unassumingly as it spiralled through psychedelic visuals accompanied by Nine Inch Nails – before it was unveiled that Ventimiglia's character is David Mason. And Menendez is still alive. And it was actually a trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 all along, boasting a story that, according to a recent blog post, takes place 40 years after the events of Black Ops 6. Let's go. Overall, it's been a rather significant year for showcases, and even though gamers will soon be clamouring for a new Nintendo Direct, we've had plenty of reveals spanning the broader gaming universe. We've got an exciting year or so ahead.

Discover timeless treasures with a voyage on the Rhine

Politics may be the reason why Strasbourg makes the headlines, but the historic beauty of the city is as eye-catching as anything discussed in the European Parliament. Wandering among the picture-perfect half-timbered buildings of the Petite France district, their flower-dappled facades reflected in the canals, the giant modern buildings of various EU institutions seem a world away. After giving my camera a workout, I relax in a café with a slice of tarte flambée; the next day, I learn how to make the Alsace version of pizza in a fun cooking demonstration on our Viking Longship, moored nearby. Strasbourg is a highlight of Viking's Rhine voyages and it features on the eight-day Rhine Getaway (which operates from early March to late November). The journey starts and finishes in Amsterdam or Basel (or vice versa), with ports of call in four countries. Arriving in Cologne, I find it easy to switch between standing in awe beneath its gigantic Gothic cathedral and sampling its revered beer culture in a traditional tavern. Another fine cathedral dominates Speyer, this one having sandstone walls and towers that glow brightly in the sun at the end of a charming 'high street'. Speyer is also home to my all-time favourite museum, the Technik, which has every mode of transport on display, from bicycles to a space shuttle. The charming town of Breisach is the gateway to an engaging included tour through the enchanted Black Forest to a hamlet where cuckoo clocks and the namesake gâteau are made. Then there's the spectacular Rhine Gorge, where the hillside castles and soaring churches come one after another – best enjoyed from the Sun Deck, with a commentary bringing the monuments to life. The authentic regional cuisine and live music on board the Viking Longship complement the chic modern comforts to be had on board. It's certainly a ship to luxuriate in, with its spacious staterooms, expansive, elegant suites, streamlined Scandinavian design and al fresco dining out on the deck. Our guide tells old tales of Kinderdijk, with its string of 19 handsome windmills built in the 18th century. Koblenz is a classic: pastel-coloured time-worn houses, cobbled lanes, enchanting churches and a colourful market square. Germany at its most picturesque is best found at Rüdesheim. The quirky taverns on and around Drosselgasse are perfect for people-watching with a glass of wine from a nearby estate. Heidelberg, on the River Neckar, a tributary of the Rhine, is unforgettable. Its huge castle dominates a hill above the river and the 18th-century bridge makes a perfect foreground for a photo. Viking offers an included excursion at almost every stop, plus a range of exciting options *. With the latter, you can discover other castles and palaces, further your knowledge of the local food and wine, explore by e-bike or climb up on the roof of a cathedral. Summer or winter? Choose one and I bet you'll return to savour the other. My unforgettable moments Infused with classic fairy tales, Germany's dense Black Forest is both romantic and mysterious. Everyone can join in Viking's included excursion from Breisach, taking the luxury coach along winding lanes, enjoying everchanging panoramas of wooded hills and lush pastures. At a hamlet hidden in the woods, you'll discover the history of cuckoo clocks, watch a glassblower and learn how to make the region's timeless gâteau. There is still enough time to follow a ravine through this captivating forest, imagining coming across Snow White or the Big Bad Wolf. The optional Beer Culture and Dinner excursion in Cologne is the perfect excuse to sample mouthwatering cuisine and beverages while immersing yourself in the cultural history of the German Purity Law, passed in 1516 to regulate beer production. In the company of a genial local host, you'll spend the evening hopping between traditional brauhauses, with generous helpings of the coveted kölsch beer and hearty food to soak it up.
