Black box of Air India flight recovered from rooftop of building it hit
The crashed Ahmedabad-London Air India flight's black box has been recovered, the Ministry of Civil Aviation informed on Friday. The orange-coloured device located near the tail of a plane will help investigate the crash that has claimed at least 265 lives so far.Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu said, "The Flight Data Recorder (Black Box) has been recovered within 28 hours from the accident site in Ahmedabad by AAIB. This marks an important step forward in the investigation. This will significantly aid the enquiry into the incident."advertisementThe device was recovered by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) team on the rooftop of the resident doctors' hostel building that the flight hit in Ahmedabad, as per sources.
Further investigation into the crash has begun following the black box recovery. Over 40 Gujarat government staff joined efforts to augment civil aviation ministry teams on the crash site, sources said.The black box is crucial in getting to the bottom of a plane crash. The device contains a Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). While the former records all technical data related to the aircraft, the latter records the cockpit conversation between two pilots until the last minute.The crash-proof device is located near the tail of the plane because, usually, an aircraft crashes on the side of the nose. The black box's position on the plane helps investigators locate it faster after a crash. Three days after a London-bound Air India plane crashed in Ahmedabad, authorities here have so far identified 32 victims through DNA testing and bodies of 14 have been handed over to their families, an official said on Sunday. The process of DNA matching of former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, who also died in the June 12 plane crash, was underway, additional civil superintendent Dr Rajnish Patel told reporters. The victims identified so far were from different places in Gujarat and Rajasthan, he said. As many of the bodies were burnt beyond recognition or damaged otherwise, authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of victims of the horrific tragedy. "Thirty two DNA samples have matched till now, and 14 bodies have already been handed over to the respective families. These deceased were from Udaipur, Vadodara, Kheda, Mehsana, Arvalli, Ahmedabad and Botad districts," said Patel. The DNA matching process for former CM Rupani was still on, he added. As many as 230 teams were formed to coordinate with the victims' families, officials earlier said. The victims included 241 of the 242 passengers and crew members on board the London-bound flight. One passenger miraculously survived. All but one of the 242 passengers and crew on board the Boeing 787-8(AI171) and another 29 persons, including five MBBS students, on the ground were killed in the plane crash on Thursday.

New Delhi: The bodies of 32 passengers who were killed in the June 12 Air India plane crash, with 242 people on board, have been identified, and their families have been contacted, additional medical superintendent of BJ Medical College, Rajnish Patel, said on Sunday. 'Of the total 32 bodies matched through DNA sampling, 14 families have already come forward and taken the bodies back home. They were from different places of Rajasthan and Gujarat. This includes the 11 passengers who were identified yesterday. Our teams have contacted the families to come and collect the bodies. Arrangements have been made for each family for their travel,' he told HT. Apart from the 32 bodies, the hospital authorities had returned 8 bodies to their kin, which did not require DNA testing for identification. Air India said there were 169 Indian passengers, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and a Canadian on board the flight bound for London's Gatwick Airport, as well as 12 crew members, making 242 onboard. Just one passenger miraculously survived the giant fireball, but several medical students are suspected to be among those who died when the Air India 787-8 Dreamliner lost altitude within 33 seconds of takeoff and hit two buildings of the BJ Medical College hostel complex. They are working round-the-clock to match the samples. We hope to release the report of 10–20 samples every day. The bodies of the passengers are being handled in a dignified way. The government has provided them accommodation and vehicles so that they can come to take the bodies at their convenience,' the dean said on Saturday night. Explaining the process, Parekh said that the tissue from bones and teeth of charred bodies was taken up for DNA profiling. 'Taking samples in case of a charred body is possible but it takes time. In case of immediate relatives, the results are delivered immediately. For distant relatives, it may take time. But all bodies will be identified and handed to the families for a dignified funeral,' he added. With relatives thronging the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital's mortuary after hearing reports of hospital authorities successfully matching the DNA reports, the district administration installed tents outside the mortuary.
