Primetime 585 Shining Star: Evan Fitzpatrick
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — News 8's Primetime 585 Shining Star spotlight shines on Notre Dame Batavia student Evan Fitzpatrick on Friday. The spotlight showcases students impacting their communities through sport and leadership.
Fitzpatrick comes from an athletic family with a personal legacy to Notre Dame Batavia, with uncles who won both state championships and sectional titles during their time playing for the school. He has followed in their footsteps since eighth grade as an involved player on the school's varsity baseball and varsity basketball teams.
In his first year on the baseball team, they won sectionals and moved on to the state championship final four. During 15 games, Fitzpatrick batted a .438, two games of which he pitched and earned two saves with a 0.00 ERA.
In the 2023-2024 season, Fitzpatrick started four games and went 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 36 strikeouts. This season, he is 4-1 with a 0.40 ERA, with 47 strikeouts and a batting average of .410.
After being a part of the sectional championship basketball team in the 2024 season with his brother Ryan, he went on to shine this past season with 120 points with 21 3-pointers, having been a starter every game. His athletic director described him as the team's 'do it all guy.'
Fitzpatrick most recently showed his talents in Thursday night's baseball game against Oakfield-Alabama, where he allowed the lead-off batter of the game to make one base before getting 21 following batters out of the game in a row. He faced one batter above the minimum for a perfect 2-2 game and struck out 7 batters with no walks. He finished the game with 68 thrown pitches, 53 of which were strikes.
Academically, Fitzpatrick ranks first in his class.
News 8 and Primetime 585 would like to congratulate Evan Fitzpatrick on his success!

Minkah Fitzpatrick Praises Steelers Veteran Additions to Secondary: ‘There's No Real Concerns'
Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is a big fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers' veteran additions to their secondary this offseason. PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers added a couple of older faces to their secondary this offseason and they have safety Minkah Fitzpatrick feeling very optimistic for the defense in 2025. Advertisement The Steelers first signed veteran cornerback Darius Slay to a one-year deal in free agency. He's 34 but Fitzpatrick thinks Slay is bringing some much-needed experience to the group. 'I think a guy like that is extremely valuable. He's covering his side of the field, and you know when you have man-to-man, he's solid over there,' Fitzpatrick said. 'There's no real concerns over there. You know he's gonna be in the right position. You know he's gonna do his job at a high level.' Slay spent the last five years with the Philadelphia Eagles as a starting outside cornerback. He started 14 games for Philly last season, plus another four on the team's run to its Super Bowl LIX championship. He finished the regular season with 49 tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and 13 passes defended. The 29-year-old spent the first four years of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs before joining the Cleveland Browns in 2023. 'He's done multiple things in all the different places he's been. He's a splash guy. He's a rangy guy, similar skillset to myself. So just having another guy out there on the field is another chess piece on the chessboard.' In his six-year NFL career, Thornhill has recorded 337 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, eight interceptions and 24 passes defended. (AP Photo/Ron Schwane) Pittsburgh's defense struggled with poor communication last season, but Fitzpatrick is optimistic the additions of Slay and Thornhill will prevent that from happening again in 2025. Advertisement 'Leave no gray,' he said. 'Football, I think, should be black and white, in regards to executions, schematics. It should just be, this is how we're doing it, this is how we're gonna communicate. If I give you a thumbs up, you give me a thumbs up back. If I give you a thumbs down, you give me a thumbs down back. It's as simple as that.' Primetime 585 Shining Star: Brynna Wilkinson
HORNELL, N.Y. (WROC) — News 8's Primetime 585 Shining Star features students who are making their mark on their communities through sport and academics. Wednesday's Shining Star spotlights Brynna Wilkinson, a seventh grader from Hornell. At the young age of 12, Wilkinson has proven herself to be a promising athlete, playing at the varsity level for the school's soccer team and running track. Having just begun her varsity career in seventh grade, Wilkinson has achieved 13 goals and 5 assists during the soccer season, helping her team become the LCAA D1 champions, Section V Class B champions, Far West Regional champions, and participate in the New York State Final Four. Without experience running track before, she joined the indoor team this winter and broke the school's record in the 1000-meter run during the RWTL Championship meet. Wilkinson is also credited with clocking the fastest time in the nation for a seventh grader during the season with a time of 3:10:48 before going on to win a sectional title in the 4×800 relay. She continued with track this spring, breaking another school record running the steeplechase for her first time, an impressive feat to achieve as a middle schooler. A sectional title in the same event followed Wilkson's run. That night, she also took home first place in the 800 and second place in the 1500. Outside of her athletic achievements in high school sports, Wilkinson plays for the Western New York Flash, NYW ODP, and Gaffer City Woman's FC teams. Most recently, she was named Play of the Match in her first game with the Gaffer City Woman's FC after she scored two goals, one of which was a header. This accomplishment makes her the youngest goal scorer in UPSL W history. News 8 and Primetime 585 would like to congratulate a true Shining Star, Brynna Wilkinson!
