Drones hit Gaza aid ship ‘Freedom Flotilla Coalition', Israel role suspected
A vessel carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza caught fire off the coast of Malta on Friday after what authorities described as a drone attack, reigniting concerns about the safety of sea-based aid missions amid the deepening crisis in the besieged Palestinian territory.
According to a report by Associated Press, the vessel, Conscience, operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition and carrying 12 crew and four civilians, was about 16 miles from Malta when the incident occurred. Malta's government said a nearby tugboat responded to the distress call and confirmed that all aboard were safe and had refused evacuation. No injuries were reported.
As per AP report, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition directly accused Israel of targeting the ship, though it provided no evidence to support the claim. It released videos showing a blaze onboard and what it described as sounds of explosions. The Israeli military did not comment on the allegation.
Photos released by Cypriot authorities showed damage to the ship's hull, while the group said the strike appeared to have targeted the generator, causing a substantial breach and leaving the vessel without power. The fire was later brought under control.

Charlie Andreasson, a longtime member of the Flotilla group, told the Associated Press that he had spoken to people onboard who confirmed hearing two explosions before the fire broke out.
This latest attack comes amid a total Israeli blockade of Gaza since March, halting even food and medicine from entering. Israel has said the move is aimed at increasing pressure on Hamas to release hostages taken during its October 7 assault on southern Israel, which killed about 1,200 people and saw 251 abducted. As of now, 59 hostages are officially in Gaza, with 24 believed to be alive.
Israel's retaliatory campaign has devastated Gaza. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, over 52,000 Palestinians—mainly women and children—have been killed, though the ministry does not distinguish between fighters and civilians. The UN and aid organisations warn that Gaza's humanitarian system is on the brink of collapse.
The International Committee of the Red Cross warned on Friday that many of its Gaza programmes, including community kitchens that serve as the sole meal source for thousands, are at risk of shutting down without immediate aid access.
'Aid must be allowed to enter Gaza. Hostages must be released. Civilians must be protected,' the ICRC said in a statement, as quoted by AP. 'Without immediate action, Gaza will descend further into chaos that humanitarian efforts will not be able to mitigate.'

Ex-CIA Analyst Jailed For Over 3 Years For Leaking Classified Information
Washington: A former CIA analyst who pleaded guilty in January over a leak of classified Israeli plans to strike Iran was sentenced to 37 months in prison on Wednesday, the US Department of Justice said. In pleading guilty, Asif William Rahman, who had worked at the US intelligence agency since 2016, acknowledged that he illegally downloaded, printed and distributed classified information on multiple occasions, including several in 2024. Why it's important US ally Israel and its regional rival Iran were in the midst of high tensions at the time and exchanged some blows. Israel at the time was preparing to strike some Iranian sites in retaliation for a ballistic missile attack that the Iranian government said was a response to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh's assassination by Israel in Tehran. Context Rahman had a "Top Secret" security clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) until his employment was terminated after his arrest in late 2024. The documents, which entailed plans by Israel to strike Iran, later appeared online after a pro-Iranian Telegram account called "Middle East Spectator" published them. Rahman, 34, is from Vienna, Virginia, and was arrested in Cambodia, according to court records. Key quote "Asif Rahman violated his position of trust by illegally accessing, removing, and transmitting Top Secret documents vital to the national security of the United States and its allies," Erik Siebert, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said on Wednesday.

Israel says Hamas 'weaponising suffering in Gaza' as aid workers killed
AP image Israel charged Thursday that Hamas was "weaponising suffering in Gaza" after a US and Israeli-backed charity accused the Palestinian militant group of killing five of its aid workers in the territory. The distribution of food and basic supplies in the blockaded and war-ravaged Gaza Strip has become increasingly fraught and perilous, exacerbating the territory's deep hunger crisis. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) said a bus carrying its staff to a distribution site near the southern city of Khan Yunis was "brutally attacked by Hamas" around 10:00 pm (1900 GMT) Wednesday, killing at least five Palestinian aid workers. "Hamas is weaponising suffering in Gaza -- denying food, targeting lifesavers and forsaking its own people," Israel's foreign ministry said on X. The GHF said: "There are at least five fatalities, multiple injuries and fear that some of our team members may have been taken hostage." Dozens of Palestinians have been killed while trying to reach GHF distribution points since they began operating in late May, according to Gaza's civil defence agency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Egypt: New Small Electric Car For Seniors. Prices Might Surprise You. Electric Cars | Search Ads Undo The agency said another 16 people were killed while waiting for aid on Thursday, adding that they were among 22 people across the territory who were killed by Israeli fire. The Israeli army said it was looking into the latest deaths. Israeli restrictions on media in the Gaza Strip and the difficulties of access on the ground mean AFP is unable to independently verify the casualty tolls provided by the civil defence agency or the deaths reported by the GHF. 'Died while waiting' An officially private effort with opaque funding, the GHF began operating on May 26 after Israel cut off supplies into Gaza for more than two months, sparking international condemnation and warnings of imminent famine. During its first week of operations, the GHF said it distributed more than seven million meals' worth of food, but its operations were widely criticised even before the deadly shootings near its sites. The United Nations and major aid groups have refused to work with the GHF, citing concerns over its practices and neutrality. "The so-called new way of handling assistance in Gaza is most degrading, humiliating & puts lives in danger," the head of the UN Palestinian refugee agency, Philippe Lazzarini, said on X on Thursday. Gaza medics have said hospitals are being inundated with people wounded while trying to obtain food. At Gaza City's Al-Shifa Hospital on Wednesday, the emergency department said it had received dozens of people who had been killed or wounded while waiting for aid in recent days, including 200 in a single day. "Many Gazans went to the Nabulsi and Netzarim areas to receive aid and were shot at and shelled with tanks," said Mutaz Harara, head of Al-Shifa's emergency department. But with few medical supplies and no operating theatres, "many patients died while waiting for their turn", he said. The war has caused major damage to infrastructure across Gaza, including water mains, telecommunication cables, power lines and roads. The Palestinian Authority said internet and fixed-line communication services were down in Gaza on Thursday following an attack on the territory's last fibre optic cable which it blamed on Israel. The Palestinian Red Crescent said the outage was affecting its emergency response by impeding communication with first responders. Convoys through Egypt? Meanwhile, two activist convoys travelling through north Africa were attempting to reach the Gaza border to highlight the blockaded territory's plight. Organisers of a planned march said Egyptian authorities had detained more than 200 activists in Cairo ahead of the planned event. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz had said he expected Egyptian authorities "to prevent the arrival of jihadist protesters at the Egypt-Israel border". Egypt said while it backs efforts to put "pressure on Israel" to lift its Gaza blockade, any foreign delegations seeking to visit the border area must obtain prior approval. The Gaza war was sparked by Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Israel said late on Wednesday that its forces had retrieved the bodies of two hostages from southern Gaza. Prior to the latest announcement, out of 251 taken hostage during the Hamas attack, 54 were still held in Gaza, including 32 the Israeli military has said are dead. Hamas's assault resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official figures. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza says Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed at least 55,104 people, the majority of them civilians. The United Nations considers the figures reliable.
