Stadium Sarawak upgrades hinge on available budget ― Minister
KUCHING (May 27): The redevelopment of Stadium Sarawak remains a key focus in Sarawak's push to become a regional sports hub, though the final scope of upgrades will depend heavily on available funding, said Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
The Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister said while the stadium is an essential venue for athletics and opening ceremonies of various sport events, financial considerations will ultimately determine the extent of its redevelopment.
'We will have to see. Cost is always one of the main factors ― whether we want to proceed with the development, and at what stage,' he told a press conference after delivering his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here earlier today.
Abdul Karim noted that aside from Stadium Sarawak, there are 18 other sports to be hosted, each requiring facility upgrades.
'If the budget does not allow for full upgrades, we may have to determine which improvements are sufficient for the stadium to accommodate the sport events and the opening ceremony,' he said.
Earlier, during his speech, Abdul Karim reaffirmed the state government's commitment to developing sports infrastructure across Sarawak in its efforts to make the state a regional sports hub.
'Led by the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), key initiatives include upgrading grassroots and elite sports facilities to improve access, talent development and quality of life.
'A highlight is the redevelopment of Stadium Sarawak, which is set to meet international standards with smart and athlete-friendly features,' he said.
He added that SSC will also implement a Critical Maintenance Audit Plan to ensure long-term sustainability of sport facilities.

500 paddlers competing at State Championship

Kota Kinabalu: About 500 paddlers representing 15 districts will compete at the Sabah state-level table tennis championship this weekend at Maksak Hall, Likas, here. The competition, running from May 30 to June 1, will be officiated by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin. The paddlers will compete in the men's and women's team events, as well as the Under-10, 13, 15 and 19 categories for both boys and girls, said Sabah Table Tennis Association president Edward Chua. 'This is a big event hosted by Kota Kinabalu, who have won for three consecutive years so far. We are calling all ping pong supporters to come and watch the games,' said Edward after the presentation of team uniforms to the Kota Kinabalu team at its clubhouse at Wisma Hakka, here. The ceremony was officiated by the Chief Minister's Political Secretary Datuk Dr Roland Chia. The uniforms were sponsored by Kota Kinabalu Table Tennis Association (KKTTA) Advisor Datuk Chua Soon Ping. The championship also serves as a platform to select state players for the national under-10, 12, 15 and 19 tournaments, said Edward. Darul Makmur Stadium Grass Pitch Receives FIFA Nod
KUANTAN, May 30 (Bernama) -- The Darul Makmur Stadium here scored a landmark precedent when its natural grass pitch became the first in Malaysia to receive certification from world governing body FIFA through its Quality Programme for Natural Playing Surfaces. Pahang Communications and Multimedia, Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Fadzli Mohamad Kamal said the certificate was issued after the pitch passed a comprehensive assessment by a FIFA-appointed consultancy company, Acousto-Scan Pty Ltd, on April 23 and 24. "The pitch received an excellent rating with a score of 93 per cent after the assessment was conducted covering three main components, namely climate testing, sports performance testing and agronomic testing," he said at a press conference here today. bootstrap slideshow Fadzli also said the assessment included aspects such as soil temperature, humidity, ball bounce, surface hardness, root system, weed content and soil health. "This recognition marks a major success in the technical and maintenance aspects of the national sports field. "I was informed that the 'Bermuda Tifgrand' grass on this field is the first to be planted outside Japan, besides this field having three layers and a water drainage system underneath to speed up the water absorption rate," he said. The field was built and upgraded according to strict FIFA specifications by local contractor, RS Greenmaster (M) Sdn Bhd, which played an important role in this success. The field upgrade project involved a cost of RM1.6 million, of which RM500,000 was contributed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports while RM1.1 million was borne by the state government. He said the contractor had already given them the green light to use the field but it would only be used in one or two months.
