Women's Six NationsEngland v ItalyVenue: LNER Community Stadium, York Date: Sunday, 23 March Kick-off: 15:00 GMTCoverage: Live on BBC Two, BBC Radio and BBC Sport website and app
England head coach John Mitchell has included GB Sevens player Jade Shekells in his Women's Six Nations squad before their opener against Italy on Sunday. The 2024 Paris Olympian, who recently played for GB in the Vancouver leg of the World Sevens Series in February, is uncapped in the XVs code.Shekells is one of four players who might make their Red Roses debut in York, including Ealing's Abi Burton, Leicester's Charlotte Fray and Exeter's Flo Robinson.Notable absences from the 37-woman squad are Harlequins hooker Connie Powell and Bristol wing Millie David. The squad will be led for the first time by new captain Zoe Aldcroft, who helped Gloucester-Hartpury win the Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR) title for the third time in a row on Sunday.Shekells has impressed in a handful of games for Gloucester-Hartpury at outside centre this season but has moved in and out of the Great Britain Sevens set-up. It is understood England are looking at her as a 12.Wing Mia Venner is included after an excellent season, culminating in an impressive outing with club side Gloucester-Hartpury in the PWR final.Venner is now in the mix for one of the most open selection battles before the Rugby World Cup in August. The wing competition includes the comeback of Claudia MacDonald at Exeter, the return from injury of Jess Breach, Abby Dow's expected return from a hand injury and now Venner.Harlequins hooker Connie Powell will not be able to add to her 19 caps as she is overtaken in the pecking order by Saracens' May Campbell.Despite Saracens losing the PWR final, Campbell has had a stellar season at club level would have been near-impossible to leave out of the squad. She has also proven her versatility with a number of appearances in the back row.England are reigning Women's Six Nations champions and are aiming to win a seventh title in a row.

Too early to tell if I will remain Scotland boss
Gregor Townsend says it is too early to say if he will remain as Scotland head coach beyond the end of his current contract, which expires next the immediate aftermath of the Six Nations, in which Scotland finished fourth, Townsend said he had no plans to step down and that the job – which he has held since 2017 – "gives me a big purpose in my life".Townsend says no discussions have taken place with Scottish Rugby over any new deal."If you get more into the year, those discussions would have to happen, whether they're initiated by my bosses or by myself," Townsend told the BBC's Scotland Rugby Podcast."I think there's obviously a lot of discussions around the Six Nations, the reviews of that, where we believe we need to improve, but also the longer-term future, what are the challenges coming up for Scotland and that ties in with the pathway and the longer-term strategy."But I feel there's a lot to be optimistic about with the current group we have, the players that are coming through and the experiences the players had this year."Yes, we're disappointed we didn't win more games, but I know the performances that the players are delivering are putting us in positions to beat the best teams in the world and that's a good foundation to have. "The next step is making sure we win those games we put that effort into winning."Townsend also expects to retain the services of his assistant, Steve Tandy, who has been linked with the vacant Wales job."He's a brilliant coach, he's very connected with our players, he's excited about this summer tour," he added."He's buzzing about working with the players again and there's nothing but speculation about him and other people that have been linked to the job outside of Scotland."We're very lucky to have Steve, we know that, and the players love working with him."

Rory Darge named as Scotland captain for Skyscanner Pacific Tour
Gregor Townsend has named his Scotland squad for the 2025 Skyscanner Pacific Tour. Rory Darge has been selected as captain for the matches against Māori All Blacks, Fiji and Samoa. Darge has co-captained Scotland along with Finn Russell in the last two Guinness Six Nations championships. He will lead a squad of 36 players with a number of familiar faces returning to the group. Andy Onyeama-Christie has been selected after overcoming an ankle injury sustained in October 2024. He made his return for Saracens in March. Hooker George Turner also comes back into the fold after missing the last year of international rugby following his move to Kobelco Kobe Steelers in Japan. He has since signed for Harlequins next year and will aim to add to his 45 caps amassed thus far. There are three uncapped players named in the squad in the shape of stand-off Fergus Burke, back-row Alexander Masibaka and tighthead prop Fin Richardson. Burke and Masibaka were both included in the Guinness Six Nations squad, when they trained regularly with the team, and Richardson has national team experience having travelled out to Chile and Uruguay on last year's summer tour. There are eight Glasgow Warriors backs named, following their exit in the United Rugby Championship play-offs over the weekend. Toulon's Ben White is chosen for his second summer tour and Arron Reed has been rewarded with a call-up after making his debut for Scotland last July. Edinburgh Rugby's Darcy Graham, Harry Paterson and Matt Currie have been called up along with Bath's Cameron Redpath, who has sights set on the Premiership final this weekend alongside Leicester. From the two finalists, Bath's Josh Bayliss and Tigers' Cameron Henderson will also tour with the squad. After missing out on the Guinness Six Nations, Max Williamson is back in the squad after impressing against South Africa in the autumn. Alec Hepburn, Nathan McBeth and Rory Sutherland will compete for the loosehead position while Will Hurd and Elliot Millar Mills join Richardson as the tighthead options. Hookers Patrick Harrison and Ewan Ashman have been familiar figures in the squad over the last year, Harrison being one of seven players in the squad who made their debuts on the Skyscanner Americas tour last year, and they join Turner as hooking options. Marshall Sykes made his Guinness Six Nations debut in March against France and he continues in the squad where he's joined by fellow second rows Max Williamson, Gregor Brown, Henderson and the experienced Grant Gilchrist. In the back row, Matt Fagerson has been selected as he continues his recovery from injury, along with Jamie Ritchie, Ben Muncaster, Darge, Bayliss, Onyeama-Christie and Masibaka. The tour kicks off with a match against the Māori All Blacks on Saturday 5 July, and will be the first time the sides have met since 2000, when the hosts edged a narrow encounter 18-15 in New Plymouth. It will be just the third match between the Māori and Scotland with the other game coming at Murrayfield in Edinburgh in 1998. The tourists will then take on Fiji, with the match marking Scotland's first game on Fijian soil since 2017. Scotland's last match against Fiji took place in November 2024 when the home side ran out 57-17 winners, with Darcy Graham scoring four tries. The tour will finish on Friday 18 July when Scotland take on Samoa. The last time the two sides played against each other was six years ago, when Scotland won 34-0 during the 2019 Rugby World Cup. The match will take place in Auckland, New Zealand, at the historic Eden Park Skyscanner Pacific Tour: Fixtures Māori All Blacks v Scotland – Semenoff Stadium, Whangārei Saturday 5 July 2025, kick-off 3.35pm (local time, Saturday 5 July, kick-off 4.35am BST) – Live on Sky Sports. Townsend: South Pacific tour ‘crucial' to Scotland seeding for World Cup
Gregor Townsend stressed the importance of Scotland's summer tour of the South Pacific after naming his 36-man squad for the three fixtures. The Scots kick off with a match against the Maori All Blacks in Whangarei, New Zealand on July 5 before they take on Fiji a week later, with the match marking Scotland's first game on Fijian soil since 2017. In their final game, Scotland take on Samoa in Auckland, New Zealand at the historic Eden Park on July 18. Head coach Townsend, who named Rory Darge as captain with George Turner returning to the fold after missing the last year of international rugby following his move to Kobelco Kobe Steelers in Japan, said: 'We know that playing Test matches for Scotland and winning Test matches for Scotland is really important, so we have to pick a strong squad to take on the likes of Fiji and Samoa. 'It's an even more important issue with the world-ranking points. The World Cup draw gets made after November, so these games are crucial to make sure we've got the best chance of being in that top six and getting a better seeding. 'There's always, maybe one or two players that we decided not to select not because of form, but because we think it's not right for them to go into tour at this time. 'But other than that, it's as strong as a squad as we could select, and the benefit of having that third game of the game against Maori All Blacks will mean that we will everybody in tour will get game time, and players that maybe haven't played as much for us in the past are going to get game time on the tour and game time for Scotland.' There are three uncapped players named by head coach Gregor Townsend – stand-off Fergus Burke, back-row Alexander Masibaka and tighthead prop Fin Richardson – although all three have been involved with the squad before. In the back row, Matt Fagerson has been included despite missing the end of season with Glasgow through injury but there is no place for Jack Dempsey, who had been sidelined since the Six Nations win over Wales in March. Forwards Andy Onyeama-Christie and Max Williamson are back in after injury. Townsend said he was pleased to be able to recall Turner, who has signed for Harlequins for next season. He said: 'I think when George went to Japan, we never knew whether that would be extended and he was there until the end of his career, which would make it very difficult for him to be considered for us, given the Japan season is played during the Six Nations. 'So it was very good news that he got a club back in the UK and he was really keen to be back involved with us.' Townsend believes some of the Scotland players who narrowly missed out on selection for the British and Irish Lions squad for the tour of Australia may yet get their chance. He said: 'I don't want to say we hope that to happen because that means someone's been injured on the tour, but if someone does get injured, then we would like to feel that our players in a strong position. Some would have been very close to selection anyway. 'If they're playing in New Zealand or in Fiji and playing well, then that gives them an even bigger opportunity to potentially join the Lions tour. 'We've seen the weekend, unfortunately for us was Zander (Fagerson) being injured, but there will be injuries on the way to Australia and during the tour in Australia. 'But the good thing for our players and those that maybe were closer to selection is they were so keen to come out and tour. They've had long seasons, but some of these players are in great form. I look at the weekend and seeing lots of Rory Darge and Tom Jordan still playing some of their best rugby at this time of the season. 'So that's great for us as we go to tour, but it should be also good for chances of getting on the Lions tour.' Scotland Under-20 men's assistant coach Fergus Pringle has been appointed as forwards coach for the tour, deputising for John Dalziel, who will be with the Lions.
