One of 25 massive movies coming to the UAE this year, Joseph Kosinski-directed production, F1 tells the story of a retired Formula One driver making his way back into the sport to coach a young talent. Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt was spotted at the Yas Marina Circuit during the 2024 Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where crucial scenes were filmed for the motion picture.

2025 a standout year for FIA championship: Ben Sulayem
The UAE's prominence on the global motorsport stage has been underlined for another year with confirmation of the FIA's major world championship calendars for 2026. The Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will take place at Yas Marina Circuit from December 4-6 next year in a championship, which will see the next generation of F1 cars running on 100% sustainable fuels. This was confirmed at the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Macau on Tuesday, which was chaired by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem as the federation's global community gathered for the FIA's annual conference. The 2026 FI World Championship again includes three other Middle East rounds, in Bahrain on April 10-12, Saudi Arabia from April 17-19 and Qatar from November 27-29. Saudi again stages back-to-back Jeddah races in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship calendar on February 13-14, while the Middle East also has four rounds in the 2026 F2 Championship coinciding with the F1 races in Bahrain, Saudi, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem speaks during the meeting. Once again, the Dakar Rally in Saudi commences next year's FIA World Rally-Raid Championship from January 3-17, with the Rally du Maroc taking place from September 28 to October 3 and the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge on November 22-27. Bahrain represents the Middle East in the ten-round F3 calendar. Ben Sulayem told World Motor Sport Council members: '2025 is proving to be an exciting year across all our championships with technological milestones being reached, new talent emerging, and battles being fought on the track and across stages each week. 'This year is a powerful opportunity for us to innovate and grow. New agreements across our championships are unlocking fresh potential, we are enhancing the level of competition and expanding our global reach. Each race across our championships shows the passion and dedication of our community.' The World Council approved one of the final pieces of the compelling puzzle that is coming together to mark the start of a brand-new era for the FIA World Rally Championship from 2027. The WRC27 rule set has been undergoing its final refinements and updates over the past six months, and confirmation in Macau of the reference volumes for bodywork cements the commitment set out by the FIA to put flexibility at the core of these regulations. To achieve this, the rules define a zone in which all of the bodywork panels must be located, but within this volume, manufacturers and constructors have the freedom to scale and integrate almost any design. This means that, without effecting performance, cars ranging from saloons to hatchbacks, cross-overs and completely bespoke designs could be entered over the ten-year regulation cycle through to 2037. Meanwhile, a new street circuit in Madrid will make its debut on the Formula 1 schedule in September of next year, replacing the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.

Verstappen needs to stay out of trouble at Canadian Grand Prix
Max Verstappen will have to keep out of trouble as he chases an unprecedented fourth Canadian Grand Prix win in a row this weekend, with only a penalty point between the Formula One champion and a race ban. The Red Bull driver has won for the last three years in Montreal, the last time after starting alongside Mercedes' pole-sitter George Russell -- the same rival he clashed with two weekends ago -- in a qualifying draw. How Verstappen will respond is an open question but others are sure to want to take whatever advantage they can of the situation at a track famed also for changeable weather. "He mustn't do anything wrong over the next two race weekends, and of course he will be told not to do anything rash," Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko wrote in a column for post-Spain. "It would be a catastrophe if he couldn't start in Austria (the race after Canada)." While McLaren, with Oscar Piastri leading Lando Norris by 10 points after nine of 24 races, will be the team to beat again, Mercedes will fancy their chances in the season's second race in North America. "It's a track where we've tended to find our feet relatively well in the past," said Mercedes technical director James Allison. "So I'm looking forward to it. "We've got one or two new bits to take with us and we'll see how we get on." Mercedes have not won since Las Vegas last November, with Russell's second place in Bahrain in April the best they have managed so far. McLaren have won seven of nine but last triumphed in Canada with Lewis Hamilton in 2012, although historically they have won more times (13) than any team there. The battle between Piastri and Norris could be about to heat up. Ferrari, now up to second in the constructors' standings, last won with Sebastian Vettel in 2018 at a track named after their late local great Gilles Villeneuve. "McLaren is still ahead, but we're closing the gap step-by-step," said team boss Fred Vasseur. The circuit holds fond memories for Ferrari's seven-times world champion Hamilton, who took his first career F1 victory there in 2007 and shares with Michael Schumacher the record of seven wins in Canada. Hamilton was down after Spain, where he finished only sixth and was overtaken by Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg, and needs a morale booster. Aston Martin's Lance Stroll is the only Canadian driver but missed the race in Spain due to hand and wrist pain. The team have yet to confirm his fitness but expect him to be back for the home crowd. US-owned Haas will be celebrating their 200th start with a retro grey livery similar to the one they started out with in 2016. "From nothing to 200 races is significant because not many new teams survive more than two seasons, and they disappear without scoring a single point," said principal Ayao Komatsu. "Our aim is high, we want to be at the front of the midfield, and there's so much going on at this team right now. For our 200th race, I really hope we can celebrate with points."

F1 replaces Imola with Madrid on 2026 calendar
The 24-race Formula 1 slate for 2026 features a grand prix in Madrid replacing Italy's Emilia Romagna GP at Imola. Governing body FIA approved the calendar on Tuesday during a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council. The final race on Imola's current contract was last month, won by four-time reigning world champion Max Verstappen. The 2026 race in Madrid, first announced in 2024, is scheduled for September 13. The season opens in Melbourne, Australia, on March 8 and runs through December 6 at Abu Dhabi in the UAE. Three races remain on the US calendar: Miami (May 3), Austin - Texas (Oct. 25) and Las Vegas (November 21).
