NBA Playoffs: Minnesota Timberwolves at Golden State Warriors odds, picks and predictions
The Minnesota Timberwolves visit the Golden State Warriors as they attempt to take a 3-1 lead in their best-of-7, second-round series Monday. Tip-off from Chase Center is set for 10 p.m. ET (ESPN). Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's NBA odds around the Timberwolves vs. Warriors odds and make our expert NBA picks and predictions for the best bets.
Regular-season series: Golden State won 3-1
Minnesota escaped with a 102-97 win over Golden State in Saturday's Game 3, covering as a 4.5-point favorite as the Under (202 cashed). G Anthony Edwards put up 36 points and F Julius Randle dropped a 24, 10, 12 triple-double to carry Minnesota's offense in the win. Along with Randle's 10 rebounds, C Rudy Gobert pulled down a game-high 13 as the T-wolves won the battle on the boards 44-36.
Golden State felt the effects of G Steph Curry's absence (hamstring) as the Dubs hit just 10 3-pointers in the loss -- they averaged 15.4 3's in their first-round series upset of the second-seeded Houston Rockets. F Jimmy Butler (33 points) and Jonathan Kuminga (30 off the bench) combined for 63 points Saturday, but the Warriors struggled to find offense outside of the duo. Both F Draymond Green (2 points) and F Kevon Looney (4 points) fouled out in the loss.

Timberwolves at Warriors picks and predictions
Prediction
Timberwolves 99, Warriors 97
PASS.
I slightly lean toward the Timberwolves to pick up the win as -220 favorites, but they are not worth the risk of betting on as such heavy favorites. I also expect that the Warriors (+180) will put up a ton of fight in this matchup as their backs are against the wall, so it is not a foregone conclusion that Minnesota will go up 3-1 in the series. PASS and bet on the spread and/or total instead.
LEAN WARRIORS +5.5 (-115).
Golden State is a team with far too much winning culture and too big of a playoff riser in Jimmy Buckets (Butler) to expect for the Warriors to roll over even though they have no momentum heading into this game. Look for Butler to have a good game and look for G Brandin Podziemski (9.7 points per game in these playoffs) to be much improved in this matchup en route to the Warriors covering as 5.5-point underdogs.
This is a lean because the Warriors are just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games, while the Wolves are 5-1 ATS in their last 6. Also, the T-wolves are the much better team with Curry out, making this bet all the more risky.
BET UNDER 199.5 (-105).
The Under has hit in 2 of the 3 games in this series. The Under is also 6-4 for the Warriors and 5-3 for the Timberwolves this postseason.
In order for Golden State to have any chance of winning this game, its defense will have to be dominant as the Warriors don't have enough offensively with Curry out to make this an offensive battle. Look for this to be a scrappy game in which defense tells the tale en route to the Under hitting.
Be aware that there is some risk with this bet as an Under number of 199.5 is very low for a modern day NBA game.

Federal judge approves $2.8 billion settlement, paving way for US colleges to pay athletes millions
Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up The agreement brings a seismic shift to hundreds of schools that were forced to reckon with the reality that their players are the ones producing the billions in TV and other revenue, mostly through football and basketball, that keep this machine humming. Related : Advertisement The scope of the changes — some have already begun — is difficult to overstate. The professionalization of college athletics will be seen in the high-stakes and expensive recruitment of stars on their way to the NFL and NBA, and they will be felt by athletes whose schools have decided to pare their programs. The agreement will resonate in nearly every one of the NCAA's 1,100 member schools boasting nearly 500,000 athletes. Advertisement The road to a settlement Wilken's ruling comes 11 years after she dealt the first significant blow to the NCAA ideal of amateurism when she ruled in favor of former UCLA basketball player Ed O'Bannon and others who were seeking a way to earn money from the use of their name, image, and likeness (NIL) — a term that is now as common in college sports as 'March Madness' or 'Roll Tide.' It was just four years ago that the NCAA cleared the way for NIL money to start flowing, but the changes coming are even bigger. Wilken granted preliminary approval to the settlement last October. That sent colleges scurrying to determine not only how they were going to afford the payments, but how to regulate an industry that also allows players to cut deals with third parties so long as they are deemed compliant by a newly formed enforcement group that will be run by auditors at Deloitte. The agreement takes a big chunk of oversight away from the NCAA and puts it in the hands of the four biggest conferences. The ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, and SEC hold most of the power and decision-making heft, especially when it comes to the College Football Playoff, which is the most significant financial driver in the industry and is not under the NCAA umbrella like the March Madness tournaments are. Related : Winners and losers The list of winners and losers is long and, in some cases, hard to tease out. A rough guide of winners would include football and basketball stars at the biggest schools, which will devote much of their bankroll to signing and retaining them. For instance, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood's NIL deal is reportedly worth between $10.5 million and $12 million. Advertisement Losers will be the walk-ons and partial scholarship athletes whose spots are gone. One of the adjustments made at Wilken's behest was to give those athletes a chance to return to the schools that cut them in anticipation of the deal going through. Also in limbo are Olympic sports many of those athletes play and that serve as the main pipeline for a US team that has won the most medals at every Olympics since the downfall of the Soviet Union. Related : All this is a price worth paying, according to the attorneys who crafted the settlement and argue they delivered exactly what they were asked for: an attempt to put more money in the pockets of the players whose sweat and toil keep people watching from the start of football season through March Madness and the College World Series in June. What the settlement does not solve is the threat of further litigation. Though this deal brings some uniformity to the rules, states still have separate laws regarding how NIL can be doled out, which could lead to legal challenges. NCAA President Charlie Baker has been consistent in pushing for federal legislation that would put college sports under one rulebook and, if he has his way, provide some form of antitrust protection to prevent the new model from being disrupted again.

Lakers' LeBron James Strongly Urged to Retire By Former NBA Big Man
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James has put together a career that places him on the "GOAT" list to many. At the very least, he's a legitimate contender to the title and the only other name on that list is Michael Jordan. It is expected that James will make his return for another season in 2025-26. He is still playing at a high level and would have a full season playing with Luka Doncic next year. He has played in 22 NBA season to this point in his career. Should he play next year, he would officially hold the record for most seasons played in the league. Right now, he is tied with Vince Carter for that record. More Photo byWhile James is expected to return for year 23, one former NBA big man does not think he should keep playing. Read more: NBA Analyst Floats Knicks Theory Regarding Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jason Kidd During an appearance with Byron Scott on the "Fast Break" podcast, Olden Polynice spoke out with a pointed statement about James. He believes that it's time for the longtime superstar to call it a career. "The longevity aspect, I think it's getting a little bit too much now," Polynice said. "Because I'm like, dude, what else you want to do? It's time for you (James) to start thinking about retiring. He ain't getting no fifth ring unless he buys one, It ain't happening." Granted, there is obvious proof that James has started slowing down some. However, he is still putting up impressive numbers and making a massive impact night in and night out. Read more: Warriors Trade Idea Lands 2-Time All-Star in Massive Offseason Move Throughout the course of the 2024-25 NBA season, James played in 70 games. He averaged 24.4 points per game to go along with 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds, and a steal. In addition, he shot 51.3 percent from the floor and knocked down 37.6 percent of his three-point attempts. Looking ahead to next season, the Lakers will need to make some offseason moves to get back into NBA Finals contention. Los Angeles needs more defense and also needs a legitimate starting center. Rob Pelinka has his work cut out for him. Polynice may be right that the Lakers aren't a favorite to win a championship, but James is more than capable of continuing to play for another year or two if he chooses to do so. It's an eye-opening take, but it's an opinion that many disagree with. For more on the Los Angeles Lakers and general NBA news, head on over to Newsweek Sports.
