Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods will not compete at the 2025 U.S. Open, marking the third consecutive major tournament he has missed this year due to an Achilles injury. Woods, 49, announced in March that he successfully underwent surgery to repair his left Achilles after feeling "a sharp pain" during training. He didn't provide a timeline for his return, but noted that he plans to "focus on my recovery and rehab."

After promising start, Rory McIlroy shoots 4-over 74 in first round of U.S. Open

Rory McIlroy went to battle with the par-5 fourth hole at Oakmont Country Club, missing the fairway with his driver, struggling in the rough and somehow managing to finish with a bogey after making a tough 30-foot putt. Rory McIlroy birdied his second and third holes in the first round of the U.S. Open, and maintained that 2-under number through his opening nine. His second nine — the front side — told a different tale. Starting his day on the 10th hole at Oakmont Country Club, McIlroy shot 33-41 for a 4-over 74. His inward half included four bogeys and a double at the par-3 eighth. It could have been worse if not for a 30-foot bogey save at the par-5 fourth. An early co-leader, McIlroy was tied for 54th when he signed his card. He had plenty of company in his misery. Playing competitors Shane Lowry and Justin Rose shot 79 and 77, respectively.

U.S. Open 2025 leaderboard: Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau struggle to hang on at Oakmont

The third major championship of the season is here, and all eyes are on Scottie Scheffler as he tees off in the afternoon wave. As the morning wave finishes their rounds, it's J.J. Spaun who sits atop the leaderboard with a stunning 4-under 66. It's the best round of the day so far. Advertisement Don't expect lower numbers in the afternoon, as Oakmont is only going to get tougher. As for Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau, it was a grind, with both struggling to remain in contention after Round 1. DeChambeau is in with a 3-over 73. As for Scheffler, the top-ranked golfer in the world, he's starting off the week as the biggest favorite the event has seen in 16 years. Scheffler has won three of his last four starts and has absolutely dominated the golf world in recent weeks. He won the PGA Championship by five shots last month, too, to claim his third major championship title. A win for him this week would bring him just a British Open away from completing the career grand slam.
