'Ready for war': Aussie Opetaia alert to Italian ambush
Like the 27 challengers who have come before him, Jai Opetaia is swatting away Claudio Squeo's threat to derail the Australian boxing superstar's undisputed world title dream.
Opetaia (27-0, 21KOs) will place his IBF and The Ring cruiserweight belts on the line against the unbeaten Squeo (17-0, 9KOs) on Sunday.
Despite entering the bout as a 15-1 underdog, the Italian is promising to prove the doubters wrong and pull off one of boxing's great boilovers at the Gold Coast Exhibition Centre.
"This is a big opportunity to shock the world, the people writing you off," Squeo said through a translator on Friday.

But with a multi-million-dollar pay day and a place in Australian boxing immortality also at stake, Opetaia is having none of it.
With much bigger fish to fry, the 29-year-old is vowing to win whatever way is required, knowing a loss is non negotiable ahead of a succession of potential super fights that could propel him to Hall of Fame status.
"I believe I can beat him in the pocket, I believe I can outbox him. We are just going to fight smart," Opetai said.
"We've got to choose our battles and just wait til Sunday."
The fight comes almost three years after a then-unfancied Opetaia defied two jaw fractures to beat champion Mairis Briedis and claim his two straps.
Opetaia has fought five times since, with the Briedis rematch last year his only genuine challenge, and is yet to land a shot at the other three belts in his division.
Badou Jack owns the WBC belt but it is WBO and WBA champion Gilberto Ramirez who is firmly in Opetaia's sights.
The Mexican two-weight champion is due for a mandatory defence later this month and insistent he will face Opetaia next.
Should both win, as most predict they will, Opetaia will be in line to finally secure a unification blockbuster against Ramirez later this year.
An Opetaia-Ramirez mega-money four-belt stoush would sit nicely on the undercard to September's historic duel between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford in Las Vegas.
Little wonder why Opetai's priority is to see off Squeo however he needs to, saying he's even ready to slug it out for 12 full rounds if that's what it takes.
"Once that bell goes every time, man, it's on and I'm ready for 12 rounds of war," he said.
"I've got no doubt he's going to come forward. That's got to be his game plan.
"We've just got to be patient. We just stick to our game plan, do what we do and we put on clinics.
"So on Sunday, I love to put on a clinic. We always do the goods, we always put on good performances.
"We are some hard-noses. We've been in the trenches the last couple of weeks. I'm riding in the wave. You know how I train to stop people."

'Not coming back': Selwyn Cobbo cops massive new blow after Broncos axing
Selwyn Cobbo might be hard-pressed getting back into the Broncos' first-grade team anytime soon after Josiah Karapani bagged a double and looked very strong on Saturday night. Karapani scored two of Brisbane's eight tries as the Broncos bounced back to form with a 44-14 thrashing of the Titans. Starting in place of the axed Cobbo, Karapani had 15 runs for 176 metres, as well as three tackle breaks and two line breaks. The 23-year-old, who'd only played 11 games in first grade before Saturday night, doubled his career try tally and looked every bit an NRL player. He vindicated coach Michael Maguire's decision to bring him in to replace Cobbo, after also getting the nod over regular first-grader Deine Mariner. Cobbo was spotted at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night, and helped the team run through their warmup drills. He appeared to be in good spirits, and reportedly took his demotion well. Maguire explained the decision to dump him to reserve grade on Friday, saying: "As a group, and as a leadership group and as a coach, we're pushing standards here and expectations in how we're doing things, and Karapani's got his opportunity and Selly's got to look at a few things in his game. "(Karapani) has been really consistent in the way he's been playing through the pre -season ... and he's obviously experienced first grade. When he has played, he's played really well. I know he'll do a good job." Maguire refused to divulge on the areas of Cobbo's game he wants to see improved, but said he "definitely" could force his way back into the side. "I'm here to coach the team. We're creating standards and ... the more you meet those, the more opportunities you have," Maguire said. Complicating the situation with Cobbo is the fact he's off-contract at the end of 2025. According to reports, the Broncos haven't tabled him a formal offer and have prioritised the re-signing of centre Kotoni Staggs. With Gehamat Shibasaki and Jesse Arthars proving themselves as genuine first-graders, and Grant Anderson set to join the Broncos from Melbourne in 2026, it's looking increasingly likely that Cobbo will depart. If the Broncos choose to keep Cobbo, it'll likely be a one-year extension that would allow him to chase the riches on offer at expansion teams Perth or PNG from 2027. Unless there's an injury or Reece Walsh is called up for State of Origin duty for Queensland, Cobbo is set for a decent stint in Queensland Cup. Aussie remains in hunt for first LPGA Tour title
Australia's Robyn Choi is just three shots off the lead heading into the final round of the rain-affected LPGA Classic in New Jersey. Starting her Saturday in a tie for 20th, the 27-year-old from the Gold Coast enjoyed birdies on holes three through six, plus on the ninth, 17th and 18th. Bogeys on 15 and 16 saw her card a five-under 66 to sit in a tie for sixth at eight under, while compatriot Karis Davidson (68) is a further three shots back. They're both chasing Ilhee Lee, who shot a three-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead over four players into the third round. 'Not happy': Fans react amid sad news around Tony Squires and Candice Warner
Fans are expressing their sadness after it was revealed on Saturday that long-running sports program 'The Back Page' has been axed after 29 years. Tony Squires, who has hosted the show on Fox Sports for the last 12 years, confirmed the sad news but admitted he wasn't surprised. The sport talk-show has been running since 1997, but will wrap up for good after three more episodes. 'Ironically, I wrote a story in 2021 saying television shows don't usually last 25 years,' Squires told . 'They're like animals on the Savannah - very few of them die of old age. 'There's always something young and exciting with big nasty teeth, coming to get them. Well, The Back Page is now 29 years old, I've been hosting it for almost 13 years ... and we've been got. To be honest, it wasn't a shock.' The late, great Mike Gibson was the show's first host back in 1997, and held the role up until 2012. Peter FitzSimons, Billy Birmingham, Tracey Holmes and Jeff Wells were the panellists when it first began, and in recent times it regularly featured journalist Robert Craddock, ironwoman Candice Warner, NRL legend Greg Alexander and AFL great Brad Johnson. Warner, the wife of Aussie cricket great David, became a weekly panellist in 2022 and used the show as a launching pad for her burgeoning media career. Former AFL player-turned-radio host Ryan Fitzgerald was also a regular panellist, as were Socceroos legends Robbie Slater and Mark Bosnich. 'It's been a privilege to host a show once run by the legendary Mike Gibson,' said Squires, who's expected to stay on with Fox Sports in another role. 'But most of all it's been fun - like sitting at the pub with your mates pretending to know a shitload about sport. 'I'm going to miss it. Not because it was a job, but because it was my social life. I got to hang out with Kelli Underwood, Ryan Fitzgerald, Kerry O'Keeffe, Candice Warner, Brad Johnson, Ben Dixon and Robert Craddock - the most enthusiastic man on the planet. 'We've interviewed hundreds of sporting superstars over the years. From Rod Laver to Gout Gout – a 17-year-old kid who lit up the screen on his first live TV interview show just a few weeks ago.' Fox Sports boss Steve Crawley said the decision to cut 'The Back Page' is not a cost-cutting move, denying it has anything to do with Foxtel's new owners DAZN. 'The Back Page has been entertaining audiences for nearly three decades; there are very few shows that can claim that.
