Oregon basketball vs. Arizona: Who has the edge in the 2025 NCAA Tournament Second Round
After dismantling the Liberty Flames, 81-52, in the first round on Friday night, the Oregon Ducks are advancing to the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Their matchup is the Arizona Wildcats — a 4-seed and a former Pac-12 foe — in a 6:40 p.m. PT game on Sunday night.
Like Oregon, Arizona destroyed their first-round opponent, the Akron Zips, defeating the 13-seed 93-65. Oregon and Arizona have been on similar paths all year. The Ducks finished the Big Ten Tournament with a 24-9 season record, and after their conference tournament, the Wildcats were 22-12 on the year. This season, most of Arizona's opponents were in Quadrant 1, and the Wildcats went 10-11 in those games. The Ducks played fewer Quad 1 games than Arizona but went 8-7 in them.
The Wildcats are led by Tommy Lloyd, one of the better young coaches in college basketball. This is Lloyd's fourth year at Arizona, and while he's taken his team to the tournament all four years, he's 5-3 once he gets there. Only two of those wins have come after the first round, and in 2023, Arizona lost as a 2-seed to 15-seeded Princeton in the first round.
The last time the Ducks and Wildcats met was in the semifinal of last year's Pac-12 Championship. Arizona was a Top-10 team in the country and a shoo-in for March Madness while Oregon's only road to the NCAA Tournament was as an automatic qualifier. The Wildcats had destroyed the Ducks twice already that season, but in the conference tournament, Oregon came out on top and booked their ticket to the tournament the next day with a win over Colorado.
Last time, this matchup was lopsided, but this time around, this pair of teams is of even caliber. Sunday's game will be the 61st meeting between these two teams, and that history should make for a great game. Below are our predictions for how things will shake out.

Keys to the Game
Oregon
Control the tempo, especially on defense. Arizona likes to play with pace which helps them score a lot of points.
Force Caleb Love to take bad shots.
Force Arizona to take threes. As a team, they shoot over 20 per game but make less than a third.
Arizona
Get Caleb Love hot early.
Force Bittle into switches on pick-and-rolls to open up the paint. The Wildcats are one of the most efficient interior offenses in the country.
Protect the defensive glass. Arizona has been bad at preventing offensive rebounds and second-chance points all year.
Betting Odds
Moneyline: Oregon: +146 | Arizona: -176
Spread: Arizona: -3.5 points
Over/Under: 152.5 points

Auburn baskeball: Tigers to host A-Sun squad to close 2025 portion of schedule

Auburn baskeball: Tigers to host A-Sun squad to close 2025 portion of schedule The Dec. 29 contest will signal the second season in a row Auburn has hosted a team from the Atlantic Sun The Auburn Tigers played one of, it not the hardest non-conference schedule in program history a season ago. It paid off, with Bruce Pearl's squad racking up nation-best 19 Quadrant 1 victories on its way to the second Final Four appearance in Auburn history. While Pearl and his staff are unlikely to scheme up a schedule as difficult as last year's version, the Tigers will certainly hope to once again build up themselves before the grinding nature of the SEC season. That process, which has already included an appearance in a loaded 'Players Era' tournament field and home-and-home series contests against Houston, Purdue, and Arizona, continued this week, as CBS Sports Insider Jon Rothstein reported the Tigers are set to A-Sun program Queens to close out the 2025 portion of the schedule. The game, which is reportedly set for Dec. 29 at Neville Arena, will signal the second season in a row Auburn has hosted a team from the Atlantic Sun. Last season the Tigers beat the brakes off of in-state opponent, North Alabama, last November. The 102-69 victory was impressive at the time, but turned into an even more significant win after the Lions finished just a game shy of the NCAA Tournament last season. Queens on the other hand was not nearly as successful, although the 20-15 Royals did drive eventual A-Sun Champion Lipscomb to the brink with an 81-75 loss in the A-Sun Tournament semi-finals. Bruce Pearl's Auburn Tigers will likely be heavily favored in their final game before they ring in the new year, but the Royals, like North Alabama last year, play in a conference loaded with talent across the board. Three Players Diamondbacks Could Trade if Struggles Continue

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Several offseason additions had the Arizona Diamondbacks in position to compete atop not only the NL West, but the National League as a whole. Injuries and poor performances have derailed that a bit, and the Diamondbacks are currently in fourth place in their division. Because of the talent possessed by the Giants, Padres and Dodgers, it is unlikely Arizona has a path to the postseason. If the team continues to struggle, here are three players who could be shipped away when the trade deadline rolls around. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 5: Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks reacts following the 11-10 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on June 5, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 5: Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks reacts following the 11-10 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on June 5, 2025 in Atlanta, Suárez, 3B Suárez is the biggest power threat in the Arizona lineup, and several teams will be looking for right-handed pop at the deadline. He has 292 career home runs, including 16 this season, as well as a game with four home runs in May. He is in the final season of a seven-year, $60 million contract that he signed prior to the 2019 season when he was still a member of the Cincinnati Reds. His contract situation will make him a prime trade target for teams such as the New York Yankees, New York Mets and Detroit Tigers. Zac Gallen, SP Like Suárez, Gallen is on a one-year deal, making him a possible trade target if Arizona decides to make him available. The one thing that would make him unattractive are his struggles this season. Just two seasons removed from a Cy Young Award, Gallen is 4-7 with a 5.13 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 13 starts and 73 2/3 innings pitched. If he is able to turn things around prior to the trade deadline, he will become an extremely attractive target for teams such as the Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs. Josh Naylor, 1B The theme of this trade list is becoming evident, as Naylor is also under contract with Arizona through the end of this season. Teams are always looking for left-handed bats at the trade deadline, and Naylor's .289 average with seven home runs, 39 RBIs and .793 OPS could make him highly coveted. Teams such as the Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners are struggling with production at first base and could benefit from adding Naylor.
