AFL 2025: Melbourne has hopeful return date for star Jack Viney

AFL 2025: Melbourne has hopeful return date for star Jack Viney

News.com.aua day ago

Melbourne is hopeful star midfielder Jack Viney will miss only one more week despite undergoing surgery on his hand earlier this week.
Viney slipped over and fractured his hand at training in Alice Springs last week and required immediate surgery.
The premiership Demon has not played since he entered concussion protocols following Melbourne's five-goal win over West Coast in round 8.
The Demons, which sit two wins outside the eight, have Collingwood in the annual King's Birthday bout before Port Adelaide on the road next week.
Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin said the healing of Viney's wound would determine his return date but was optimistic he could face the Power at Adelaide Oval.
'Yeah, it went well, I have never seen a surgery that hasn't gone well, but it went well,' he said.
'You know it now comes down to the wound and making sure he's functional.
'Whether that's next week or the week after, we will wait and see. We're hopeful there's an opportunity for next week, but we haven't put any definite timeline on that.'
The Demons' building 2025 campaign hit a bollard last week when they lost to St Kilda.
Melbourne dominated the play, particularly in the second half, but kicked a wasteful 21 behinds.
With Carlton (13th) and Sydney (14th) favoured to collect wins, last week's loss forces the 12th-placed Demons into do-or-die mode against Collingwood.
They will need to make at least one change after forward Aidan Johnson copped a two-match ban for a high bump on Saint Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera.
Matt Jefferson has kicked successive hauls of five goals in the VFL, while Jacob van Rooyen has averaged two goals and 18 disposals further up the ground across the past two weeks.
'With Aidan Johnson being suspended that presents an opportunity,' Goodwin said.
'It's going to be a tough decision because Matthew Jefferson and Jacob van Rooyen are both playing outstanding footy.
'Obviously, everyone looks at Matty Jefferson kicking 10 goals over two weeks, I think van Rooyen has kicked six or seven.
'They're both playing outstanding footy, we've got some decisions to make later in the week around who comes in.
'What we do know is the two guys who have gone back to get into form, they're in really good form. We're excited by that.'

‘No test?': AFL world unloads on Lachie Neale, Dayne Zorko high shots

Brisbane Lions stars Lachie Neale and Dayne Zorko both suffered heavy head knocks in Friday night's clash with the Crows in Adelaide. James Peatling was swiftly reported for a sling tackle on two-time Brownlow medallist Neale, while Zorko slammed his head into the turf after a fair collision with Alex Neal-Bullen. Both premiership players appeared shaken up after the heavy contact on a wet night in Adelaide, but neither seemed to go for Head Injury Assessments, much to the surprise of those watching on. It is standard practice for players to undergo assessments on the sideline for any head-high shots, yet Neale and Zorko played on after doing their best to shake off the heavy contact and clear their own heads. Watch Lachie Neale's heavy contact in the video player above 'No way to protect himself there Lachie Neale,' Anthony Hudson said on Fox Footy after Neale was tackles. Garry Lyon added: 'Dangerous tackle being paid here against Peatling, who has the job on Lachie Neale. 'Do they take him off and look at it or not? Probably doctors would be looking at that now.' Just minutes later, two-time All Australian Zorko became airborne after contact from Neal-Bullen and the back of his head met heavily with the pitch. 'He looks a bit sore Zorko, that was a great effort by Neal Bullen coming from the left of screen,' Crows great Mark Ricciuto said. 'Zorko hit his head as well but unfortunately just bad luck in the contest that one.' 'I think he's in trouble, he was reported by the umpire for that dumping tackle on Neale,' Fox Footy's Jon Ralph said at halftime. 'I think the extreme dumping motion there, as his head hits the ground, means he's likely to miss one week. 'It's excessive force, there's more than one action in a vulnerable position. They're the things (Match Review Officer) Michael Christian looks for.' Nathan Buckley and Jordan Lewis both agreed Peatling was in trouble. But the fact neither player appeared to get any treatment from club officials was curious to those watching on. Sports writer Ronny Lerner wrote: 'Surprising that Neale or Zorko haven't left the field yet for HIAs. They clearly clutched their heads after they hit the ground hard.' One fan replied: 'Agreed they either need a HIA or they're playing it up.' Another fan asked: 'Neale gonna get that checked out we reckon?' A fourth joked: 'Adelaide's game plan … give concussions.' A fifth stated: 'Wait, what … no concussion test for Neale? Just got his temporal lobe smashed into the ground enough that an infield report was made.' Another tweeted: 'So if Neale hit his head then why isn't he getting checked over?? Double standards for stars?' Many also felt 24-year-old Peatling, who started his career with GWS before moving to Adelaide, could prepare for some time on the sideline. 'That's a suspension. 2 actions, cya later. Neale better do a HIA too,' was one comment on X. 'Reported for rough conduct. Yeah. Fair enough. That's a bad tackle,' said another. 'RDO for James Peatling coming up,' wrote another. 'That's going to be a little holiday for Peatling,' was another comment. In a low scoring contest, the Lions kicked the only two goals of the first quarter before Adelaide fought back, with the visitors holding an eight-point lead at halftime.

Key pair back as Blues swing axe for Dons grudge match

Carlton have swung the axe at selection as they welcome back Jack Silvagni and Zac Williams from injuries for the AFL crunch clash with old foes Essendon. Silvagni (groin) and Williams (calf) have passed fitness tests, while Alex Cincotta and former Bombers forward Orazio Fantasia also return for the Blues in Sunday night's MCG contest. Cincotta, who had off-season hip surgery, and Fantasia will play their first senior games of the year after recent comeback through Carlton's reserves. It will also be Fantasia's first game for the Blues against Essendon, with whom he made his AFL debut in 2014. Harry O'Farrell, Lewis Young, Jaxon Binns and Corey Durdin have all been omitted. As expected, the Bombers will be bolstered by the appearance of star midfielder Darcy Parish for the first time this season. Parish has been hampered by ongoing back and calf issues in a difficult start to 2025. But he has eased into a comeback in two VFL matches on limited minutes over the past fortnight and replaces Elijah Tsatas (omitted) against Carlton. In Sunday's other contest, North Melbourne have recalled WA products Griffin Logue and Robert Hansen Jr for their "home'' clash with West Coast in Bunbury. Key defender Logue replaces the injured Aidan Corr (calf tightness). Tall forward Finnbar Maley has been omitted. The Eagles have been bolstered by the return of experienced small forward Jamie Cripps after just two matches on the sidelines following knee surgery. Noah Long has been dropped.
